Great reference book!,
This review is from: Mobsters, Gangs, Crooks and Other Creeps-Volume 1 - New York City (Kindle Edition)
Most people will find this incredibly boring but I really enjoyed it a lot. Put it down with the strange list of other books I am reading as research on the next Cabbottown Witch Novel, but this one was pretty helpful.
It's a one volume excyclopedia, listing alphabetically, the nastiest, most violent, corrupt, immoral and just plain "BAG GUYS" (and gals) who ever terrorized NYC from its earliest days. Two things really stood out for me. 1. This Joe Bruno writes Brooklyn dialect with the best of them, bringing life and reality to the historical characters he is describing. My favorite was the dance hall girl/prositute who admonishes members of a competing gang for coming into a bar outside their own turf: "Yous guys got some noive comin' in here!" 2. Although I considered myself a well-read student of American history and considering that I have seen "Gangs of New York", I still did not fathom the issues NYC has always had with criminals who operate outside the law, and those that operate within it.
It's a listing by name, of all the bad boys and a short story about each's notorious career. Well done!
