4.0 out of 5 stars How much do you really like the series?, November 20, 2006
This review is from: The West Wing: The Complete Series Collection (DVD)
There is no question in my mind the "The West Wing" was one of the greatest drama series on television ever. And if you've been holding out on buying the DVDs until this box set was released then I would suggest you part with some cash immediately. The issue for a lot of people reading these reviews, however, is going to be whether or not they are going to want to replace individual box sets with this release. I'm not going to suggest to you what the best move is, although in the next few days you're going to see my box sets on sale, but this is really a decision on whether or not you want a beautifully packaged set. That is what this is. The 'leather' folder the disks come in is perfect in terms of design for this series. The two 'books' that the set contains are glossy, and the pictures are beautiful. It is also a welcome change to see seasons 1 to 4 discs one -sided as opposed to the previous release. The individual folders that the disks here come in are sturdy enough and again well designed. However, I can't spot any additional extras on the discs. The foreward by Aaron Sorkin also isn't new - it's taken from the first Scriptbook that was released. So if you are a Wingnut, chances are you've seen everything here before and as I said it really comes down to the packaging and the fact that you were going to buy Season 7 anyway so why not splurge on this. I'm giving it 4 stars as opposed to 5 because I can't quite forgive the makers for Season 5 and also because it would have been nice of them to include something extra for the Wingnuts here considering it is us who are really going to be purchasing this set.

I liked your review a lot, but still don't understand why so many fans were so bent out of shape about season five. It def. wasn't as humorous as the first four, but there were several incredible episodes: Slow news day (Richard Schiff at his very best), shutdown, constituency of one, the supremes, 7A WF 83429, An Khe, Full disclosure, Access (Janney won her fourth emmy for this one) just to name a few. The acting was still top notch (although Lowe was sorely missed). And the other episodes were still better than pretty much everything else on television.

We should stop giving it such a bad wrap, as Im convinced that, had Sorkin's name still been attached to season five, no one would be complaining about it.

Season five started the downfall. Sorkin wasn't there and wrote none of it and it was brutally obvious. Not only was the dialogue (which is a huge part of character) nowhere near as classy as it used to be, but the plotting was clumsy in comparison to the other four seasons. I can almost guarantee that Sorkin would have dragged the Zooey kidnapping out for another three episodes, probably had her killed and then use that as a brilliant character addition to President Bartlett. But no, they went back to "business as usual" except that nobody could plot or write as well as Aaron Sorkin. That's why season five is so annoying. Did they have some good episodes? Sure. But I can't find ONE episode I DON'T like in Seasons 1 - 4. There's the difference.

I agree with MC. The only reason people don't like Season 5 through 7 can be described in one sentence. The departure of Aaron Sorkin. So he didn't write any of those shows, no big deal. As previously stated there are a number of interesting episodes in the last 3 seasons. Even if Sorkin wasn't there, he was in spirit. After all it was his baby, and wouldn't have lasted as long as it did without his blessing. It is to date the best drama series of the 21st Century, even though it only won the Emmy 4 out of the 7 times, and I for one am glad I own it.

I have to say I disagree. I am a Wingnut, and I noticed the degrading quality of the storyline with this season. It was months after that, that I noticed Sorkin was gone. I thought to myself, "oh, well that explains it."
