Use of Cheaper Materials in the New Models,
This review is from: Rockport Men's Eureka Walking Shoe (Apparel)
I first purchased a pair of these back in late 2010 I was very impressed by the build quality and materials of the shoe. The faux leather was of very high quality with very natural grain which made it distinguishable from real leather. In fact, it not only looked like leather but felt like leather as well. Flash forward to 2012 and I saw these on sale and decided to purchase a pair in the same color. To my disappointment it looks like Rockport has changed to lower quality materials now. The faux leather now looks very fake with barely any grain and a very rubbery feel to it. It no longer looks like a high quality shoe and instead looks and feels tacky. I figured the pair I received might have been a fluke so I exchanged it for another only to see the same thing. I guess for Rockport its a cost cutting move. See the pics I have uploaded showing the 2010 version of this shoe and compare it to Amazon's stock pics of the newer version. It's a shame as this used to be a very high quality shoe at a very reasonable price.

Hello. Media, I'm Steven from China and I also buy a pair of this shoe. you're right. Rockport changed to use the PU-Coated leather in the new pattern. I guess it is the cost saving. I'm a leather expert and used to work for Rockport 8 year ago in Chia. I'm also very disappointed when we I receive the shoe yesterday.

Try the Mephisto Match, available on Amazon at a good price and the most comfortable shoe I have ever owned. Also, first class materials and workmanship. Remember you get what you pay for: Mehisto is worth the extra $$ when you think of how much time you spend on your feet. You will love this shoe, you can't go wrong. James Frank

I understand how you feel. One of my first jobs as a teenager was selling Rockport shoes. At the time, the quality was excellent and that was pretty much the only brand of boot or dress shoe I would ever buy for the next decade. It didn't matter if I bought them at a retail store, discount store, Rockport outlet clearance or Ebay; the quality was always fantastic. In the last few years they have turned to absolute junk. They fit poorly and fall apart quickly. I literally have ten year old Rockports that still feel great (not as waterproof as they once were, but still...). Now the soles come off after six weeks. It doesn't matter if it is the highest price boot in their lineup - it is all junk now. The people at the stores have a bad attitude and are really defensive because they spend so much time dealing with complaints. I got hoodwinked out of good money spending big to buy the exact model of boot that used to be great. I hope they go out of business so they can stop ripping people off by prostituting what used to be a great name.

I appreciate all your points of view, that Rockport quality has gone down considerably. From my point of view, I am now holding a pair I bought in the 1990's vs. one I just bought a month ago. The oler ones were made in CHina, the recent in Vietnam. I see what you people are talking about. The more recent versions are made from a synthetic leather or it appears so. BUT, here are some observations.
First I am wearing the new ones to exercise walk 2-3 miles a day. They are a bit loose in the heel box, but they are comfortable overall. The new leather seems very tough, thicker than the older. My main criticism is they are sized large-ish, but this doesn't affect my walking too much.
Second, here's the point about these shoes: The issue is the sole. That's the soul of the shoe. The problem with all these shoes is that the molded sole wears out long before the uppers, and then you have to throw them away. I am working on a repair procedure to extend the lifetime of these shoes. For example, my 1990's Rockports have uppers which will last another 30 years (minimum), if I can repair the soles. (possible).

I've been buying rockport for about a decade now and this really hits the nail on the head.
Previously the quality was superb.
My previous pair had the problem in which the sole of the shoe kept on falling apart.
The material on my current pair is starting to peel off already after a few months.
They still look and feel great but this will have been my last pair for a while.
