Every once in a while, Disney gets brave and ventures outside their "Perfect-Princess" cliche formula. This is a great sci-fi flick, with astounding special effects, a strong plot and great characters. The women in this movie are strong, they are leaders and fighters, and don't need a man to rescue them or fight their battles for them. I encouraged my daughters to watch this. I like it for the sci-fi and comedy. My girls like it because the women kick butt. In addition, the movie boasts some hefty male voice talent too: Michael J. Fox as Milo, Leonard Nimoy as the Atlantean King, James Garner as the lead Mercenary, John Mahoney as the financier of the expedition, and the late Jim Varney (Know whut I mean Verne?) as Cookie, who died shortly after its release.
My favorite quote from the movie... Jim Varney as Cookie: "What in tarnation is this?!?!?" Female soldier: "Lettuce. It's a vegetable, Cookie. The men need the four food groups." Cookie: "Lettuce?!? Bah! I got yer four food groups...beans, bacon, whiskey and lard!"
