Impressive, but some issues,
This review is from: Electric Tiki Gargoyles: Classic Heroes: Goliath Statue (Toy)
-- NOTE: THIS IS NOT A TOY. It is made of polystone and is very fragile! --
I was a huge fan of Gargoyles back when it aired in 1994 and was definitely looking forward to having the big guy as a centerpiece in my curio cabinet.
The statue arrived in a large black box with a picture of Goliath on the front and a quote from Greg Weisman on both sides. The statue was packed pretty well and came in four pieces (two wings, the body perched on the spire , and the base with the "GARGOYLES" logo on it). Each wing had a metal rod that fit into the back of the statue, and the body/spire piece sat on two metal rods that stuck out of the base and a keyhole-shaped protrusion that fit into a similarly-shaped hole in the base.
Getting the wings on was easy enough, but attaching the body/spire to the base was a nightmare because the keyhole shapes didn't line up perfectly. As a result, the statue looked like it was floating off the base because was only held up by the two metal rods and wobbled around. I had to use a blade to carve out the hole in the base to get a better fit. BE CAREFUL when you place the body/spire piece onto the metal rods in the base because this statue is made of polystone that feels solid but is actually quite brittle and WILL chip around the rods if you press down too firmly. Good thing I don't plan on selling this "limited-edition collector's item" anytime soon!
Now that the assembly is out of the way, how does the big guy look in my curio cabinet? With that wingspan, Goliath looks damn impressive, especially with the proper lighting. It's a good paint job and the irises line up properly unlike those deluxe vinyl figures that Applause made. Unfortunately, the statue isn't as smooth as it looks in the pictures. The front of the statue looks nice, but the usually out-of-view parts such as the lower part of the tail and especially the underside of the feet look rough, like it was carved out and not sanded down properly. I don't have any other polystone statues to compare it to, so maybe this is just the style.
Overall, I like this statue. Despite having a few rough edges and being a pain to assemble, in the end it just looks cool, and that's all that matters. For the price though, only die-hard fans should even think about owning this.
