Look, it’s a government field manual. You can actually get it for free if you are willing to download and print it yourself. For the price, I am not. Too lazy and I like having a nice, neatly bound copy.
The information contained within it is simply some of the best. It’s a pretty broad overview of the subject but it will keep you alive if you follow the directions. lol
There are many, many books on the subject. The SAS survival manual is probably the best.
But for a small, compact easily accessible manual this is a good one.
Hey, it’s cheap enough, just get one.

So many typos

Counted 15 misspelled words in the first chapter. It's a good book but there's hundred of typos in it which shouldn't be there considering this manual is free anywhere on the internet with no typos.

I received a genuine copy of FM 21-76 back in the early 80s. What I received when I ordered this is not the actual manual. It is a print on demand version with a different cover and has many typesetting errors not present in a genuine manual. Some pages have an incredibly small font and only take up half the page. And there are other pages where an entire paragraph of words are strung together without spaces between words. THIS OCCURS ON A VERY LIMITED NUMBER OF PAGES.

The content appears to be all the same, but I am disappoint by the layout. As the purpose of this for me is education and reference (and keep with my camping/hiking gear) I will most likely be keeping it while I keep an open at army anvy stores for a genuine manual without the typesetting issues.

Common sense survival manual

This is an inexpensive, common sense survival manual, as opposed to some of the forty and fifty dollar manuals...not to say that many of them are not great. But those manuals usually presume you have already mastered the basic survival skills. If you grew up in the city, and you're not real in-tune with nature, it can save your life with down-to-earth tips. I would suggest this for a young city couple that are venturing out into the woodlands, hiking or camping, especially with small children, for the first time. It may be a bit over-simplistic to the seasoned hiker or camper, as it has a picture of a "frog" and a "crayfish." It does have valuable tips on identifying, and how to avoid, poisonous snakes, spiders, mushrooms (fungi), etc.

The manual is also useful for tips on building a fire, constructing a make-shift shelter, and what to include in a rucksack for a short hike. Once read, you're not apt to qualify as a "Green Beret", but it may give you enough confidence to handle an otherwise unfamiliar situation calmly.

This book was first introduced to me by father who was in the army, he/it taught me very useful skills that I used growing up, and then with my own family now. I never could remember all the information that was in the book so I had to pick up another copy. Best investment a person can make in my opinion. Buy it.
