EXCERPT: He wakes up every morning knowing the world owes him something. Every woman was created for his demand, except for Vanessa Roundtree and her mother. Once lured onto their farm in the middle of nowhere he becomes their prey. As they torment his body, they break down his arrogance. Will he be able to escape? Or will he become just another of the corpses of Old Farm Hill Road?
OVERVIEW: When a man lives to control others meets a group of women who cause pain to be happy, what is going to happen? 'The Corpses of Old Farm Hill Road: The Arrogant Man' is a short story of 43 pages. You will definitely get the heebee jeebees. I wouldn't suggest reading this late at night unless you want to get the full effect and you like to get scared out of your wits.
You start to wonder, who's behind you or who's watching you.
Tabitha Short definitely puts that scare effect in you. This is definitely a page turner and a KEEPER. You'll want to read this one over and over again. But wait for that dark, stormy night; possibly Halloween, and then read it. Tabitha Short gets hold of you and doesn't let go. That book is glued to your hands. The 'creeps' are there to stay. She very vividly describes the torture. You may want to crawl under the covers and hide.
The story starts with Mathew, who is as arrogant as the title says. He didn't deserve what he got. No one would deserve that. He just wasn't a likable person. The women use their imaginations to derive plans of torturing their hostage. You wonder as you read is he would escape somehow, or if something else would happen to him.
The girls come up with some imaginative tortures for their hostage and it was thrilling to read wondering if he would escape or not and what else might become of him. Will these girls come up with more plans of torture for others? How long will they get away with doing this?
I wish the story was a little more gloom and doom with a lot of gore added. It was fairly well written for a short story. I'd give it a four star rating. I just wish there had been a little more.
I recommend this for adults only, who want to enjoy an evening of the DARKER SIDE!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, Tabitha Short, for this unbiased review.
"What are you doing?" He cried as he fell to his knees and then to the floor. "Playing," she said to him as she jerked the hook wildly, tearing through the skin and bone.'
'With one last breath he rolled himself over, flinging himself from the edge of the loft boards. He begged for death as his body rolled through the air, falling to the hard ground.'
Oh, my what a magnificent, creepily, chilling horror short story!!! Wow this author knows how to really pull you into a story quickly, at the same time you feel distress and alarm as you read the story unfolding. I already have some of her other books in my want to read file.
The synopsis does a great job of telling you what the story is about, but it can't express the complete horror of this story. I'm a mom and imagine my shock and disgust when I was rooting for the jerk to take out one of the girls. He is a repulsive jerk , but what they put him through, had me wanting to see him escape (hopefully having learned a lesson).
This story has a solid 4 stars the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I wanted more. How did the family evolve into serial killers? How many others were there? I hope the author writes more in this world.
I highly recommend this for adults only, that enjoy the darker side of horror.
I read this after reading Ms Short's `Please Do Feed The Animals Zoo'.
Again, the tale was nicely set up but this time the protagonist is the far less likeable Arrogant Man of the title. Despite the unpleasant nature of the main character, you still find yourself on his side after he ends up at the mercy of a most unpleasant all female family.
Knowing that the Arrogant Man is due some comeuppance doesn't make his ordeal any less excruciating. You find yourself putting on his shoes and thinking what you could possibly do to turn the tables. The tension build with every page you turn as you wonder what could possibly happen next and whether escape is just around the corner.
If you liked `The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' then you'll enjoy this.
Fans of House of a 1000 corpses & House of Wax & and all those kinds of movies will love The corpses of old Farm Hill Road. It's a disturbingly twisted short story about a seriously twisted family and a man that maybe, maybe not deserved what he got. Mathew is the kind of guy most girls would kick between the legs for being a total jerk, but what he got was probably worse then he deserved.
The story was written with a great attention to detail. Ms. Short spared no sickening moment and made you live it. I would have liked a bit more back story, but from what I've been told, this is only book 1 of a series so we'll have to wait and see what happens next.
'The Corpses of Old Farm Hill Road: The Arrogant Man' is a 43 page short story that will give you the jeepers creepers! I chose to read it late at night so I could get the FULL creep out effect. If you're looking for a quick Halloween read you found it! This is one of those stories where you find yourself with your mouth open thinking "Wow, this character is beyond disturbing!'' Tabitha Short engages the reader right from the get go, which is a BIG must when writing a short story. Once she grabs you, she doesn't let go. Her descriptions of torture will get your heart racing and reaching for your blanket to snuggle in and feel safe! I give my thumbs up to this macabre tale!
This short story is creepy and violent, just what it was supposed to be. While the title character, The Arrogant Man, isn't a character I'd cry over, he still suffered things no one should be put through. It made me think of Dexter in a way since this family has targeted a "bad guy", but Dexter has more reasoning behind it - these chicks are just sick and having fun tormenting this guy. The author has a seriously wicked mind and the story would translate well into a horror movie that would have me covering my eyes throughout most of it!

What happens when a man who lives to control others meets a family of women who can only feel pleasure by causing pain?
The horror progresses and is compounded by each meticulous, mundane detail, proceeding at a deliberate pace until the tension is unbearable. Believable and utterly chilling. A quick but disturbing read.
