I grew up in a small town where everyone went to church virtually every Sunday. Our minister believed that The Book of Psalms was the most powerful book in the bible. Every Sunday he read a passage and contemplated its meaning in today's world. The lessons have stuck with me for decades.
I found Vickie Phelps book to be a continuation of that minister's readings. Phelps relates the Psalms to world events as well as to every day challenges and events … some large, some small. It is a gentle reminder that being a Christian is not about Sundays but about the everyday acts we engage in. It is about living our lives in a state of grace.
I have read through "Psalms for the Common Man" once and will return to it again and again as a reminder that I can make a big difference in this world by being a Christian in "deed" as well as in name.
In addition to the teachings and the stories, Phelps also ended each short (and easy to read) chapter with a "Prayer for the Day" or a "Thought for the Day." I wrote these on a sticky note and put it above my kitchen sink as something to contemplate throughout the day.
In this book of devotions, the author gives inspiration and insight into the book of Psalm. The writing is sincere, heartfelt, and helps the reader to find meaning in the verses throughout the chapters of Psalm. The book can be read straight through or can be enjoyed by turning to any page daily.
I found this book to be fascinating and spiritual . I was captivated by this book and couldn't put it down. It was extremely well written and a very easy read for the common person as the title suggests. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested not only in the bible but also in a great read!-Lawrence
Very well organized. Important reminder that Scripture is as relevant today as it wash in the time of David. Ms. Phelps shares insightful and thought-provoking personal anecdotes that serve as a necessary and effective bridge to these ancient words of wisdom Inspirational.
