I became totally swept up with Irena's journey to travel to America and try to find a life with meaning here from the very first chapter. Irena is a very easy character to identify with as she is you and me. Not the prettiest, just an average girl making her way through difficult situations on her own. I loved being able to trace an average immigrant's path and all they experienced and how those experiences shaped them. It was a very humanizing story and one I would recommend to everyone. You will love the characters, empathize with Irena's familiar internal struggles and want to keep journeying with her by voraciously turning each page!

What an excellent novel! This novel is an interesting read with an amazing amount of historical facts as well as amusing folklore. The author's attention to detail made this book one that was difficult to put down.

Longing for Home immediately grabbed my attention due to the fact that my relatives were immigrants from Europe. The personal details & struggles this 19th century couple endured left me longing for more information about my own grandparents. I never realized nor was told about the difficulty immigrants endured after arriving in the United States. Thank you Ms Wayman.

I really enjoyed reading the book, because it kept me interested. I did not want to put the book down. It was well written and it gave me a glimpse of the past (1890s). It was about a young Slovenian lady, named Irena, who came to America to find a place she can call home. She endures life’s challenges and hardships, so she can obtain every human’s dream - freedom, love and a family. I believe, everyone should read this book. Because our county, the United States is made of different nationalities. THIS BOOK IS ABOUT OUR HISTORY.

An understanding and realistic view of the Irish-Slovenian immigrant experience to the U.S. in the 1890s. The story of a 17 year old girl off to a new country where she neither knew the language nor culture captures the struggles and emotions of making a new beginning. The details of the experience show the extensive research behind the story. As a book club selection, this was an easy and captivating read.
