Let me preface this with three things, I am a first time cat owner, I have a bloodhound nose and I care about the environment. Now we've gotten those out the way, by itself, this litter is awful.

This stuff tracks, maybe even as much as TikTok. My cat walks through a litter mat, 20 feet of carpeted room AND a floor mat, yet this stuff still manages to appear at the front door. Tracking? 2/5

Nothing besides a commercial hazmat cleaner could possibly mask the smell of another animal's urine and feces for me, but it smells nice! I was using Okocat before, so it is a nice upgrade from piss scented pine. Smell? 3/5

Hope you can scoop slowly, this stuff has a weak binding agent. You will tremble with fear every time you successfully scoop a pee soaked ball, only for it to fall apart like you just lost a claw machine game. Clumping? 1/5 (Protip: I mix this with Okocat, which makes the litter dry enough for it to stay together. )

Overall? 2/5, mix it with Okocat for a 3/5 rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Litter (with one caveat)

I have been using this off and on for 8 years or so (sometimes buying Feline Pine when I couldn't find this). All things considered, I prefer this litter to any other, including the Feline Pine. I prefer it to clay because it is almost dust-free and (I believe) much more environmentally-friendly. I prefer it to Pine because I sometimes find the pine odor overpowering, especially when mingled with the scent of cat urine. Yesterday's News has a much more mild scent. The pellets of Yesterday's News also seem to absorb better and disintegrate more slowly than the Pine pellets (when I used Pine, it would seem like the litter turned to sawdust after a couple good uses). I prefer it to Swheat Scoop because there is significantly less tracking. Swheat Scoop clumps, which is a feature that some people may like, but I find it messier (leading to little urine-litter cakes forming on the bottom of the cat pan).

The only potential negative is that it may be difficult for some people to remove the cat urine without changing the entire box. This is crucial if, like me, you are blessed with a cat who won't go unless the box is pristine (we actually have two boxes side-by-side, and he often urinates in one and then jumps in the other immediately to defaecate--but that's the downside of having a neurotically clean animal). My method is to look for the wet spots where the pellets have started to degrade and simple use a non-slotted scoop to remove these. Then I mist the box with Nature's Miracle to keep odor down. The problem was when I had a friend watch the cat, she could not see where the litter was wet and consequently didn't remove the urine frequently enough. The cat peed on the floor. I was unhappy.

The current price on Amazon ($14.99 with free shipping) is pretty good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Kitty Litter
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 28, 2014

This is my favorite kitty litter, easy to clean up spills and better for the pets than the fine dust kind. Odor control is great but last a little shorter time than some other brands. However for the benefits to you and your pet just change it a day earlier (if required).

I would have given it 5 stars but I took one off for the delivery. Next time I will wait for a bargain on the smaller bags. The litter was in a bag in a box typical Amazon fashion but the weight of the bag and rough courier handling caused the bag to split in the box and begin leaking out of the amazon packaging before it even arrived.

Maintenance:
You would not flush all of this as it is paper and would swell in the pipes and cause a major blockage. It is far better to use bin liners and throw it out and replace. However I disagree with some who say you can not scoop it. I scoop the poop fine and flush it with the tiny amount of litter that gets caught in the scoop. This has never caused a problem or blockage in 10 years of use, just don't over scoop. It is pellet form so is easy to vacuum and means no more fine sharp dust trails on your floor or in your cats paws. I don't know about other pet types but my cats have all loved it over the years

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome for older cats, no more stinky cat litter smell!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 25, 2017
Style: Soft TextureFlavor Name: Fresh ScentSize: lbVerified Purchase
My 16 year old cat had some health issues and I noticed she was sneezing. After some reading I decided to try switching her cat litter to see if indeed the cat litter dust was causing the sneezing. Sure enough right after I switched her cat litter the sneezing stopped.
I also had moved her cat litter box to my bathroom while she was recovering from surgery and the cat box smell was making me nuts. I changed her previous cat litter everyday, scrubbed her cat litter box out every other day and could not get that cat litter box smell to go away. Even put deodorizers all around it. After I switched to this cat litter, that stinky cat box smell was gone! So what I do is put down a cat litter box liner, put approximately 1" of this litter in and change out all the litter about every 3-5 days. Works really well for us. The pellets swell up when they are wet, but I found it kinda difficult to scope out just the swelled up pellets.
Another great thing is I no longer have cat litter all around the litter box and no longer have to use cat litter mats (that never really worked for us anyways). Sometimes a few pellets find their way out of the litter box, but it's so few and sooo much easier to clean up.
My cat had no difficulty transitioning to this cat litter. I just started using it one day and she has been just fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Potty Training Bunnies, Great Price!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 25, 2015
Style: Soft TextureFlavor Name: Fresh ScentSize: lbVerified Purchase
Wonderful Price for such a large bag AND FREE shipping! This is the perfect product for potty training bunnies. Bunnies cannot use cat litter of any kind, especially the clumping type because it gets inside their urinary system and creates some pretty serious problems. This product was suggested by my exotic veterinarian years ago for my bunnies. The only thing I was a little disappointed with, was that the "Fresh Scent" is smells like floral female perfume to me. I am a strong believer in not using perfumes because they are usually loaded with toxins of some sort. If you just clean up after your animal daily, smell will never be an issue. I put my rabbit in the box directly on the product and she did "taste", not eat, the product several times because it does look similar to her pellets. She figured out it is not food and stopped so I am happy about that. I would love to find out if this company makes a non scented identical product. I will be purchasing this product again. I am giving 4 stars because of my personal belief in keeping things more natural, especially if you are using recycled material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Cat Litter on the market!

My Vet recommended this to me and I have so enjoyed using it. No more tracking the other stuff around the house. This is pretty much contained to right around the litter box. I have two cats so two litter boxes. I do wish the scented kind came in the larger size. It is slightly more expensive than the odorless. I have bought the large bag unscented, but it is so heavy to lift, have finally decided to just get two of the smalls. I change it once a week, throw out the week before's kitty litter, and the cats love it! The amonia is absorbed way down in the litter. Who knew newspapers could be converted into a kitty litter. Very green and good for the environment. My daughter gave me a Litter Maid last Dec. and I used it for a couple months and gave it back to her. It was more trouble than it was worth! My cats potty way too much and the rake would get clogged up, so it was a CONSTANT battle to keep it working. Had to clean off the rake, change the tray it dumped everything in every two days. I would hear it jammed and have to jump up to clean the thing. This Yesterday's News is really wonderful and I recommend it to everyone I know that has a cat!

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last a litter I like and my Cat likes, better than all the others

I have used just about every litter sold on Amazon. The cat was
costing me a small fortune in litter. I bought a bag of Yesterday's
News Cat Litter early December 2013. In three months I still have a
lot on hand.I have a very old cat who pees everywhere and has an over
active bladder.

It is true The YN is very absorbent!

We have several litter boxes of varying sizes. Currently I am using a
small Pureness Giant High Sides Cat Litter Pan, no liner.

I store the YN in a five gallon pail wiith tight cover. I place about
2 cups of YN in the pan.

I dump litter once or twice a day into a waste basket with liner.
Litter dumps easily. No need so far for a
scoop, a light tap on wastebasket the used litter drps into bad. I
don't worry about the pan being damp.

Keeping YN in covered pail keeps it from absorbing moisture from the
air. This bag of YN will last a long long time.

I used to load the litter pan with a couple of inches of litter. The
cat would pee over the side. Just covering the bottom of the pan
works. I should have used YN a long time ago. It is not available in
lour local markets and with Prime shippig it is easy to by here.

Our vet hospital uses Yesterday's news. My cat got used to it after an operation. We switched over from the clumping sand to Yesterdays news and are thrilled. The paper is very absorbent. The fragrance is very pleasant, much much nicer than any of the clumping sands. My cat is not a big cat box scratcher - if she was the pellets might spill out - but even with the normal spillage the pellets are very easy to clean up. It is very easy to clean out yesterday's news and only remove the soiled pellets. You have to sort of scrape away the clean pellets and excavate to the lowest level to find the wet pellets, but they stick together so it is easy to scoop them out. The biggest benefit for me is that when I am pouring the pellets into the cat box I don't get the full face hit of noxious dust like I did with the clumping sand. My cat doesn't have the clumping sand dust in her fur nor does my cat's fur stink like some perfume counter in a mall. She seems to really prefer it - we had both types of cat litter available after her operation - and has never gone back to the clumping sand box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good alternative to clumping litter
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 10, 2021

This would be a great alternative to having the clumping cat litter. I think it would be best to start your kittens out on it. I tried it on grown cats and they didn't like it. They refused to use it to 💩 (#2) in. My advice is don't get a couple of huge bags to try for your older cats if you want to change. I didn't even open the 2nd bag, since they decided they didn't like it. It also got tracked outside of the litter box with the cat's feet.
