This review is to address some of the complaints about the Whirlpool, AP51030K HEPA air purifier. First, I am not one to leave feedback, but I do use it extensively to decide on my purchases. I ordered the purifier and received it in 3 days, no damage or complaints. I did keep the original packaging and box in case I needed to return. In fact, I still have the box. It was out of the box and plugged in within minutes after a quick review of the manual. Some purchasers talk of a vibrating noise after a few days of use. I had the same problem after about 6 days; after 10 days it was so noisy, we couldn't use it at night. I debated on sending it back, but I repair electrical products and wanted to see if I could remedy the problem before returning it. It turns out that the mounting hub comes loose from the motor spindle which is attached with an allen set screw. I took everything apart, verified the fan cage wasn't hitting anything, tightened the set screw and problem solved. We have been running it twice a day now without any problems. The purifier is quiet as it was when first turned on. We have been using it for nearly two months now every day.
The repair is very simple, but you will need a long reach, tamper proof, T10 security torx bit and set of allen keys. You can purchase these at a hardware store. Total repair took about 15-20 minutes.
Now for the performance of the purifier. My girlfriend is allergic to dogs and we have a black lab who lives insides. My girlfriend would wake up every morning sneezing terribly for quite some time, despite keeping the house clean, having a quality air filter on the a/c air return and taking allergy pills. After one night of using the purifier she only sneezed once the next morning!! Now, after nearly two months of use, she has stopped taking her daily dose of allergy pills from one a day to only using one every three days and this is purely for prevention more than anything. The cost savings from pills will easily pay for this purifier in time, offsetting the cost of filters as well. The purifier works. Yes, you will probably have to tighten the mounting hub, but it really is a simple repair. I will try and post a photo of the fan hub you will need to tighten. I hope this review is helpful to anyone looking to make the purchase. I have not received any incentive to write this, but Sylvane did ask for a private review, one option for a positive and one for a negative. I decided to post directly on Amazon for everyone to see in an unbiased manner.
