Top critical review
Update: 2/8/17 Opinion going down 2* now; Great for Amazon products, not so great as a tablet.

I've waited a couple of months now before I post to let things "settle in" before I made a review. Overall I like the Fire HD 10 but there are several little nagging things that just bug me. Don't get me wrong here, I guess that it does what it is designed for but I was really hoping that it would do more. One more thing. I'm 65 years old and have been using computers of one sort or another for going on 25 years. I'm not a newbie and I'm willing to try new and different things. I also know how things should work and how they do work.
Integration with Amazon is excellent. The Amazon Prime video integration is superb. If all your looking for is Kindle books and Amazon Prime videos, this is one great product.
The display for viewing books and videos is amazing and you can't really ask for too much more.
Update: I'm still really amazed at the quality of the display. It really is great.
Cons: Maybe there is too much integration with Amazon pushing their products and sites. Almost every screen has an ad for Amazon or it's products in one way or another. It gets to be almost overwhelming.
The touch screen display is almost hit or miss on when it will "decide" to work. Sometimes you can hover over a link button (and never touch the screen) and it will decide to activate, while other times you can push on the screen and wait for 30 seconds before anything happens. Then just as you go to push the link again it will actually work. I had a screen protector on mine and thought that might be part of the problem and yanked it off when I got really frustrated one night. Didn't make a difference. I've tried styli (plural for sytlus?) of several types and it's still hit or miss. I don't know if this is common on all Fire's but it's really frustrating with mine.
There is a definite "lag time" on some sites on how quickly pages activate. Any app or program that is supplied with the tablet seems to work much quicker than apps that I've side loaded.
I've never rooted this tablet, but I have tried to add some functionality to the Fire that I've found wanting. While Silk (the Amazon browser) "works" I much prefer Firefox as I can Sync it to all my other devices and have common links and bookmarks that Silk will not allow. I much prefer Texture over the Amazon Kindle magazine app because of the choice of magazines. I also prefer Gmail over the supplied Amazon product. I also prefer to check out books from my library or other free services because I can't afford the Amazon prices for the books. While these added apps work, they are not as seamlessly functional as the supplied Amazon products or the way they work on my Android phone or Dell laptop.
Update: After 8 months my overall opinion is going DOWN. It's getting slower and slower in operation. I put in a 128 gig micro SD card and have the majority of apps, videos, etc loaded on there. I still get constant messages telling me I'm low on internal memory with over a gig still open in the tablet and 60 gig on the SD card. The speed of loading apps is getting slower and slower. Loading Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest takes MINUTES at times. There is no excuse for this. Lately, a large number of times after being on Facebook, Twitter, etc. the app will crash and go back to the home page with no explanation whatsoever. Unacceptable. I switched from the Google Play app whenever possible to the Fire/AMAzon app, with no improvement.
All in all, am I satisfied? I bought mine during the summer sale and paid $149 for the tablet. At that price i guess I'm satisfied. At the $229 regular price knowing what I know now, I'd probably be disappointed.
If all you are looking for is a book reader for Kindle books, and a video viewer for Amazon Prime products this will really fit the bill, it's an EXCELLENT product. If what you are looking for is a fully functioning tablet that will let you function kind of like a mini laptop or large Android phone, and use the apps and sites that you prefer then this is probably not the item you are looking for.
UPDATE OVERALL OPINION: If all you are looking for is Amazon Prime extensions like Prime Video, E Books, or Prime Music this Fire HD 10 is great and if you can get one for under $100, do it. If you are looking for any kind of other applications like games, regular Google/Android apps or business/school type applications go somewhere else. This is NOT A TABLET. It is a dedicated Amazon product.
