DO NOT ORDER FROM AMAZON (DEAD BATTERY)
August 22, 2018
(First off, let me just say the laptop is great. Don't let the rest of my review scare you off from tracking down one of these bad boys. Just because the battery cant hold up to amazons horrid storage conditions doesn't mean acer makes bad batteries, as I've had amazon mail me dead batteries from all kinds of brands.)
SO so many different times I have ordered something from amazon only to have the thing arrive in perfect condition with a perfectly dead battery. So dead that it wont even charge. Well it has happened yet again. If you DO order via amazon fulfillment expect to be calling acer customer care for 20 minutes while they walk you through everything you just did realizing the battery is fully dead. The laptop works great as long as I keep it plugged in, but if i lose power or anything it'll immediately shut off as i have a nice little battery icon with an X in it saying "No battery detected". Took the bottom case off and double checked it was connected fine. When I try to charge it the orange light comes on for maybe 6 seconds and then turns off. Bleh.
So for now I get to enjoy my shiny new laptop while I wait on a acer customer care shipping label to come in the mail.
Speakers arent anything to write home about, but they get decently loud, laptop is fast, smooth, bought it for basic documents and web browsing and then "thin and light" gimmick and that's what I love about it. It's a little top heavy but I don't notice it when im typing, if I'm just using the trackpad it does lift up a tad even with the screen tilted maybe an inch back from a 90 degree angle. but I think that's just what you're going to get with a nice gorilla glass screen. Cant say anything about the battery life (HA HA NOT FUNNY) but it turns on super fast.
I bought this because I gave my $1400 lenovo ideapad to my wife and that was my favorite laptop. Once I get a fresh battery in this thing it'll be my new favorite im sure :)
If anything else goes wrong i'll definitely come back and update the review.
My laptop arrived at acer repair center on monday and was repaired within 3 hours and immediately shipped back out. got here on wednesday at noon. Haven't had any other problems thus far, new battery works perfect, this thing is amazingly power efficient and gives a great boost of speed to itself whenever it needs it.
Brightness. Lots of reviews talk about it juuuust needs like one more tick on the brightness level to give videos that pop they need. I have to agree, I did however go into the intel graphics settings and turn the contrast from 50 to 51 and it's actually a noticeable difference where i feel it 98% compensates for that missing brightness tick. I WILL say for typing in Word i would never need full brightness in my living room even with the base settings. These comparisons are coming from me being used to my HP that could get perfectly bright for videos and too bright for text editing. I feel with contrast at 51 (52 was too much believe it or not, messed with the colors too much) the brightness thing is a non issue for me now.
Been using this for a little over a week now every day for several hours at a time after work.
For the brightness I actually ended up taking it down to 50 (default) contrast and for videos I just max the brightness and for typing in Word I do about 2 ticks up from the darkest setting. So brightness is absolutely not a problem for me with this laptop.
After doing a lot of typing on this keyboard they keys actually feel a little jiggly to me. To me that kind of lowers the quality feeling of the keyboard. With that said I really like the short action on them it really helps my typing speed. The key size and placement is also perfect.
This laptop gets really warm when it's charging... on the back of the laptop the heat is from the bottom of the number keys to the back end farthest from the touch pad. In winter this will be a fantastic lap warmer ( wont be TOO hot) but for summer and even now when fall is rolling around I have to have a fan on me or put this on a laptop stand or lapboard. Charges super fast but even when it's fully charged it feels like the heat never calms down unless I unplug it. I wonder if it's because of having battery saver on automatically when it's unplugged? Which you cant turn that on when it's plugged in, there's no low heat mode unless you go into the custom power settings and limit the processor state when plugged in.
There is also a "System cooling policy" setting i am toying with. This laptop is FANLESS meaning in the cooling policy for some reason by default fresh out of the box unplugged is set to "passive" and plugged in is "active". "passive" decreases processor speed to cool before turning on the fan and "active" says "slow the processor before increasing fan speed". So this not having a fan you'd think they'd both need set to "passive". So I'm going to try that, and if that doesn't cool it down noticeably I'm just going to cap the processor speed when plugged in.
