I bought this as a replacement for my KS Hive 2+ Bluetooth speaker which suddenly stopped producing sound after a year :(
I was initially impressed by the many positive reviews on Amazon and the rave reviews on notable tech websites.
It's packaged in a really great box, although I almost missed the USB charging cable which is tucked neatly away beneath the speaker -- don't accidentally throw it away!
I really like the look of the speaker, it's compact, tactile and modern. I bought mine in a light grey colour with yellow buttons.
It comes with some charge so you can test it out straight away. I was a little apprehensive about the power-up noise it makes; in other reviews people had complained it was quite loud and obtrusive. I actually like the noise and I don't think it's ridiculously loud either. I never play music to get to sleep so I wouldn't be worried about the volume of the power-down noise either as it switches off automatically after a period of inactivity.
The speaker connected very quickly to my Android smartphone and I later found out that two phones can connect at the same time. A minor negative is the lack of aux input, which for some people is a must if their device isn't Bluetooth enabled.
On first impressions the sound quality for such a small, neat device is really impressive. Sparse piano music is beautifully crisp, without the static hiss sometimes heard on cheaper products during silent moments. More complex audio is rich and well balanced. Ultimately speaker to be used for parties and outdoor events so the bass is - as the name suggests - boomy. However, it is not distorted even at high volumes. Mid ranges are good too, all together an all round audio performance. I also own Sennheiser Momentum headphones which are excellent, so I have heard my music as it should sound.
I then took the speaker to a large hall, with a stage and an auditorium for 250 people. I placed the speaker in the centre of the room, played music and gradually increased the volume. The speaker, which is about as big a as a large orange, easily filled the entire hall with sound. Intrigued by its 360° output I ran around the speaker to test this feature. The audio was equally spread and balanced wherever I stood. I am yet to test it at full volume in an outdoor space.
The buttons and functions are well placed, easy to use and find. It's a shame there's no skip a track function. It is possible to restart a song but not possible to go back to the previous song.
Lastly I tested it's waterproofness. Of course, I was anxious about dropping my new, £50+ speaker in a bowl of water. It floated straight away and a few bubbles streamed out of the fabric-knit surface. Music continued to play with no difference in sound quality. After taking it out, a fair amount of water streamed out of the speaker through the fabric which was quite alarming. After shaking it dry and wiping it down with a towel, all is good and the speaker is in my room happily pumping out my music. I can't imagine many people host regular pool parties but it's waterproofing would definitely proove useful at the beach or at least poolside. Plus, if it gets dirty you can wash it!
So, is it worth the money? (I bought my Wonderboom at £52, not at the RRP of £80.) For its size, ease of use, waterproofing, volume and aesthetics, absolutely. I probably wouldn't have bought it for £80, just because that was beyond my budget regardless of how good the product is. If you're looking for proffessional studio sound quality look elsewhere. I am a dancer so music quality is important to me and this speaker really fulfills my requirements. Even for casual domestic use it'll be better than what kitchen radios and mobile phones are capable of producing.
Not the cheapest Bluetooth speaker around and a lack of aux cord may be a downer for some. Sound quality is great for even a keen audiophile like me, but maybe not be the best option for real musicians and music lovers. I highly recommend this product and I hope it lasts the test if time!
I love it (maybe because it's my first bluetooth speaker). However, I will be honest and say I was disappointed by the bass when I tested it the first time (albeit with a song that has deep bass). It can't reach the lower bass tones and so doesn't have the richness and "boom". That said, it's still ok and does have bass, just not considerable. Also, the waterproof feature is good, no problems there.
One annoyance is that it cannot be used when making or taking calls, not even as an output. It just cuts out completely, which was rather disappointing when I first discovered it. All in all, it's a decent speaker, lacking in a couple of personal points of preference. I still love it though.
I absolutely LOVE this thing! Buy one. That's all I can say!
I was in the market for a rugged bluetooth speaker for those days I'm out and about being 'active' or just chilling near a river or the sea without worrying about damaging my speaker, and this was the one for me. The thing I like most is it's a similar size to a camera lens so it sits nicely in my camera back pack :)
Super easy to connect, and first impressions were WOW - how can this make such a good quality sound at such a high volume? It really does fill the room with pleasant sound. Let me be clear - its not the same quality or as much bass as the likes of the Bose SoundLink Mini II however (remember that's 3x as much, and not waterproof or particularly rugged) but it's very good quality - clear mids and highs, lacking bass a little but it's by no means tinny.
I have compared to the Anker Soundcore 2, and I hate to say it, having been SUPER impressed with Anker products in the past, the Soundcore was really....feeble. This is by far and away better sound quality.
I now seem to carry this around the house with me most days, so I have music with me at all times...namely the bathroom.
I have tested the waterproofing of this too - plonked it in the hot tub and it lived to tell another day. Don't expcet it to make much music under/in water though.
Battery life is amazing on this as well, it specifies 10 hours, but at alow volume I'm sure I get more than that.
My only 'gripe' is the battery life "indicator" playing a series of tones - you will get used to what the tones mean...they are a series of beeps and bloops depending on low medium or high. You can also find youtube videos for their meaning.
You can skip forward with a double press of the logo, but not back. Play/Pause with one press :)
I have also added a carabiner to the hanging loop so can hang this up almost anywhere, or clip on to my backpack.
Incredibly happy with this purchase, and am now a UE convert! Check my other reviews for MegaBoom reviews :)
Love everything about this, the design is fantastic, they've put a lot of thought into it, it's almost perfect. It's easy to use and it makes little noises when it turns on and a device connects that almost feel like it's talking to me. We bought a second one and our friends have bought one themselves after seeing ours.
Battery life seems to last forever. I've had it since April and use it occasionally (on weekends mostly) and I've only charged it twice.
Loud sound, we had two of these hooked up at our wedding drinks reception because the restaurant speakers weren't loud enough. We had one inside and one on the balcony and the volume was perfect for background music. At home, I have it on one of the lowest settings.
Issues are minor - if more than one device connects to it at the same time the sound skips and there is no way that I've found to see what's connected and kick people off if needed. I have to go find each device and disconnect that way but I've started remembering to disconnect when I've finished with it so that kinda solves that issue. Also, I can never remember which little button it is to link two of them together, but that's because I do it rarely.
Very impressed, the entire family loves it - highly recommended!
I have been on the fence about speakers like this for quite some time. However, I use a cargo bike to shuttle my two kids around, so I finally purchased this one when I read about the improved bass.
Considering the size, the sound is great. If placed correctly you will be able to enjoy a surprisingly rich sound. We play it while moving around in the city, and we are able to hear it even with noisy cars around.
I have also used it for a handful of hours in the living room during a dinner; I connected it to the Amazon Echo Dot and it works really well. I placed the speaker on a head-high shelf, and the sound pleased everyone.
I even dropped it into the pool to swim with music. It was too much noise in the public pool to hear it from a distance, but still a fun experiment. If you are the only one in the water, maybe it would be audible in the entire pool? Maybe not, I don't know (yet).
Just recieved this dinky little speaker today and i was very impressed! Good sound, fills the room well, even when loud. Unfortunately, had it next to me in the shower, and it fell in, managing to get a fair amount of water on it. Equally unfortunately this now has caused an odd set of faults whereby i cannot turn it off, pair new devices, or turn the volume up on the device itself. As well as all that it randomly turns the volume right down from time to time. Will see if UE get in contact with me, but i'd advise being on the safe side and not dunking this speaker if you can avoid it!
I've bought 2 of these in 2 years. One as a gift, then one for myself after I saw how awesome and perfectly suited for me this speaker is. It is great quality to have in the shower or at the lake on summer days, compact for travelling, loud and great quality. I really like how you can pause and skip songs using the speaker rather than having to get my phone out. This is especially beneficial when in the shower as I can double tap the top of the speaker and it skips to the the song. 👌🏼 My partner also has the Megaboom which is another great speaker for what we need it for. Will continue to buy Ultimate Ears products.
Excellent sound and volume. No distortion, although in our flat we could play it a full pelt, the neighbours 2 floors down would probably hear it. The charging cable on mind stopped working after a couple of months but Amazon made sure I got a replacement free of charge. My partner has a Wonderboom too and no problem with the charging cable. If you are not fussy about the colour some are good prices available at times here on Amazon but you may have to keep an eye open for price reductions.
I was excited to receive this speaker. It looks good & feels well made; although it is quite chunky & heavy for super portability. Some songs sounded fine but many just had a background of distorted fuzzy bass sounds - this completely spoilt the listening experience. This occurred with various artists, different types of music & differing volumes. Our first use was away on holiday - the battery length was impressive. I am not sure if our speaker was defective - I hope this is the case; it went back for a refund & I am now looking for an alternative.
Absolutely amazing sound for such a small compact speaker. Goes nice and loud without distorting, and good rich sound if on a reasonable sized hard surface like a table. Battery life is amazing. Bought on offer from Amazon which made the price even better!
Only downside is sometimes if you open Amazon Music before connecting it the iPhone / speaker confuse themselves and won’t connect without turning off Bluetooth and reconnecting whilst coming out and back into Amazon Music. Otherwise no issues at all.
