After a few more weeks of use the right ear speaker developed a buzz below 95hertz. I sent them back. Too bad. Still a great set of headphones just wished they had better quality control on component install. I'm sure I was just unlucky but still had to update the rating to two stars.
OK so first things first i'm a huge fan of the Beyer Dynamic DT770 Pro in 32ohm. They were my daily drivers for 2 years and i loved them. Huge bottom end with no loss of clarity anywhere I can hear. When I started headset shopping I couldn't believe Beyer made basically an updated 770 with a detachable cord and boom mic. Specs said 16ohm for the Beyer Custom Games so I assumed that these would work without an amp... and they sometimes do.
Build quality is just as good as ever. These are no "gamer" branded fluff. Solid metal and plastics. No creaks and just as amazing a fit as I remember. I did order a set of factory velour cups to match my 770s, the pleather OEMs are fine, but the velour just doesn't sweat in the summer months. Worth the $30.
Now about sound quality. They are very similar to my 770s only at the most open bass port setting any restriction ruins the sound IMO. My issue was loudness. For a 16ohm headset they need A TON of juice. My Galaxay S8 active and my Logitech G110 were not able to really push these drivers past 75% of max. Only an Xfi Sound blaster board got closer to 85% of the 770s. I had to run a dedicated headphone amp to fully get the lows to come alive and blast these cans to their full potential. I really don't mind it but it is kinda disappointing that these will be non mobile phones as I hate carrying portable amps with me. Funny enough a simple Sansa mp3 player did better than my phone at driving them louder. The distortion at 100% was pretty noticeable though.
So for you people on the fence about these. Yes you need extra juice to run them. Yes I recommend at least 8 hrs burn in before judging them, below 100hz really opened up after a day of use. That aside, these are AMAZING. Comfortable, solid built, non flashy, bass head approved SQ. They are basically a modernized DT770 pro with an optional boom mic for gaming. Trust me these will out perform every Razor, Corsair, Skullcandy or any other "GAMER" lifestyle branded product. Beyer Dynamic is German made and the emphasis on sound quality over gimmicks is very apparent.
