A fast drive but set your expectations before buying
Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019
I recently purchased the Samsung T5 - 1TB model and by no means is it a bad drive, but I had been reading reviews on the Samsung X5 and wanted to see if it is as fast as people say.
The X5 comes in a nice compact box, and as you can see, is barely bigger than the T5 and fits in my hand easily.
To test the speed of this drive, I did not use any synthetic benchmark testing, as I feel those do not represent real world performance. The laptop in use has the following specifications:
Laptop: Dell XPS 13 9370 (2018 model)
RAM: 16GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Storage: 512GB M.2 2280 SSD, PCIe NVME
Operating system: Windows 10 home
I plugged both drives and transferred 357GB of data (i.e., movies pictures, TV shows, etc) from the T5 to X5. As you can see from my pictures, it took just about 20 minutes to copy everything over. The X5 did not come anywhere close to the promised 2800 write speed, but I can definitely say it's much faster than the T5 I own and my old hard drive. For kicks, I copied a 5GB file, planet of the apes to itself and that took literally 5 seconds. INSANE!
I do want to say that the read speeds arent impressive. Copying(reading) that same file to my desktop from the X5, oddly only netted me 9mbs, and would occasionally spike up to over 100mbs.
The other thing to note is that the X5 does heat up when used for an extended period of time. Research shows that the drive throttles itself when getting too hot, which could explain why the speed dipped every so often, but all drives heat up so I wouldn't let this deter you from buying it.
I had to return this ssd, due to its lackluster performance. I owned both the 1TB and 2TB model and in my experience, this drive did not perform even remotely close to its promised speeds.
My first issue is that its read/write speeds were extremely inconsistent. Ranging from 1.5GBs all the way down to 400MBs, with it averaging 400MBs. This is unacceptable considering I own the Samsung T5 and it performed better in almost every test I did.
I CANNOT recommend this to any consumer.
