5.0 out of 5 starsMy first Chromebook and so far Loving it!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 13, 2019
So on a whim a financially smarter individual would have ignored, I recently purchased the Dell Inspiron 14 2in1 Chromebook. This is my first personal computer in years (not counting a Windows 8 tablet a few years back). This is also my first time experiencing a Chromebook. I’ll be honest here: I had some reservations about buying a Chromebook over Windows or Apple.

In the end after ready other reviews and watching youtube videos of various offerings I looked at two primary deciding factors: 1. Can I do what I want to do with a Chromebook? and 2. What is it I want to be able to do? I want to get back into writing...Chromebooks lets me use Google Docs. It isn’t Word, but that’s fine. And I wanted to be able to use internet. Chromebooks are primarily web based. And so far it is really responsive and faster than any of my previous computers or even the computers I use at work. Looking at my previous usage of computers I realized that even were I to get a Windows PC or a Macbook, the usage itself would not change drastically. I’d use it for writing and internet.
I wanted a Chromebook that would have a good screen and build with a backlit keyboard that could function as both a laptop and an oversized tablet for drawing. The Dell Inspiron 14 chromebook fit the bill in regards to those features. So I zeroed in and did my research and bought one.

Ease of Use

Setting up this Chromebook was really easy. Finding my wifi password took longer than the overall setup of this computer. After powering it on, basically it just wanted my Google username and password and then it walked me through setting up my internet connection and gave me the option of viewing tutorials or a tour of features.
The mouse is responsive and has many ease of use gesture options available. The keyboard feels great and I love that it is backlit so that I can work in darker settings.
There is no sleep option though closing the lid seems to put it to sleep. And shutting down is quick as is starting it up; just takes a few seconds and using the Smart Lock feature I can unlock it with my phone.

Design

Not much for me to say here. It is solidly built, a little heavier than some of the other Chromebooks I looked at, but is very pleasant looking. It has a microSD slot, two USB-C ports, either one of which can be used for charging the laptop. It has one USB port and place to plug in headphones. The monitor can fold backwards to become a tablet; since it is a bit on the heavy side you will probably want to lay it down on your lap or use it in tent mode. The built in speakers are downward facing but audio is loud and clear. Beneath the computer’s base on the right side is a stylus that works wonderfully; I really liked discovering that my Samsung Note 8’s S-pen works on this screen and this computer’s stylus works on the Note 8.
There aren’t function keys on the keyboard, at least not labeled though there are shortcuts to them and you can, I believe, change the behavior of the number keys to perform same as function keys.
As a writer I was surprised at first to find that there is no caps lock key, but I soon learned that ALT + SEARCH key turns on caps and a simple SHIFT press turns it back off.

Screen and Audio

The screen is very vivid and bright, full HD. And as I said earlier, despite having the built in speakers under the base of the computer sound is clear and easy to hear.

Conclusion

All-in-all I am very pleased with this purchase. At $545 at time of purchase it definitely on the more expensive side of Chromebooks. However, this seems justified in excellent build quality; it feels premium to me. If you are looking for a great Chromebook and are not against having much of your work/usage take place online and saved in the cloud, I would definitely recommend this computer.

1.0 out of 5 starsHorrible Warranty Support Service. Still waiting after 1 month
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 19, 2019
Update 2/22/20
Still having problems!!! The original computer I purchased from Amazaon was sent into Dell Repair two times (as discussed in the previous entries below). Dell finally decided to replace the computer than have me wait a long repair time for a backordered part. I received the replacement computer and found out that Dell replaced the brand new purchased computer with a "Certified Refurbished" (used) computer. Aaaaaaargh!!! I Can't Believe It!!! Duped by Dell again!!! In addition the "Certified Refurbished" computer was defective. The keyboard backlight did not work. How can it be "Certified..." if it is not functioning properly? I tried brightening the backlight just to see if it was turned down, I tried to see if there was a way to turn it off and on. No matter what I tried, still no backlight. I called technical support, again. The computer is being sent back to Dell Repair again. This will be the third time. The computer(s) have spent more time in shipping process and repair than I have had it in my possesion. There should be some kind of law against this kind of customer service. I tried to have faith in Dell's repair process. But it has taken soo long that the time has passed for me to get a refund from the Amazon vendor. So now I am stuck with a used, scratched up computer (certified refurbished) in place of the brand new computer that was originally purchased from Amazon. Now it is too late to return the computer back to the Vendor for a full refund and I am stuck with a Dell Piece of Junk Chromebook.

Update 2/7/20
Problems continue to persist with this Dell Laptop Chromebook. To see what the problem is read the 1/14/20 update below. The item was sent to Dell Warranty repair. Dell repair said that they cleaned the system, ran the system tests and said everything was good. When I received the computer everything was set back up and the same problem persisted. After talking with Dell repair, I had to send it into repair again. I am currently waiting on a forever hold as the part they need to replace is on backorder for a month. Dell said they would go ahead and replace the computer, but I have not heard from them to move forward with the replacement process. The Dell warranty support agents are a contracted out-of-the country foreign speaking company. Most of them do not write or speak english well enough to understand. The are very strigent to their policies and procedures and will do very little to better serve the customer. I have had to contact warranty support over 10 times about this issue and still the problem persists. Don't buy a Dell, they are just not as reliable and customer service oriented as they used to be. STAY AWAY FROM A DELL!!!

Update 1/14/20
Not a very happy user. I'm tempted to return the product and get my money back. I have sent it to the manufacturer to see if they can fix the issue. The issue is that when the fan turns on, computer errors start to happen. When the computer is connected to a bluetooth speaker and in tablet mode, the fan starts to run frequently, this causes the bluetooth connection to crackle, cut out and even stop working. At the same time the computer programs in use slows down, stutters and even freezes up temporarily. This is a very annoying bug. It appears the fan is causing some kind of interference issue and/or the processor is overheating and the fan is unable to properly cool the processor. I don't even understand why an intel i3 processor would even be overworked with with a Chrome Operating System. I think something is seriously wrong with the motherboard, processor and/or fan on this computer. This would constitute a major hardware issue. I would expect better performance from a Dell computer. Now I have to wait, who knows how long, to ship the computer back, have the problem repaired and returned. The manufacturer states that this will take 7-12 days

Original review December 2019:
This is a great laptop with all the features of an upper end computer. The price they charge for an i3 processor and an excellent display is a great deal. Chrome OS does not really need this much of a processor, but more processing speed is always good. As Chrome OS becomes more processing and memory intensive in the future, having the better processor always helps. Chrome OS is just as good as any other operating system. So far I haven't found anything that this operating system can't do that other operating systems can, it is quite versatile. One concern I have is that the speakers on the laptop are mediocre at best. There are no adjustments in Chrome OS that allows you to adjust the finite sound components to improve the sound quality. The bluetooth feature easily connect to speakers. The only other thing I wish this laptop had was a camera on the keyboard side of the laptop so you can look at the touch screen while taking pictures. It is a heavy laptop for its size so you cannot hold it comfortably in one hand while using the touchscreen in the other. Great computer I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Chromebook - Might Be Worth It vs. Cheapo Models
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 18, 2020
Verified Purchase
I have used Chromebooks for the past 5 years or so, and have owned 3 different models. The previous two were very inexpensive Asus models, which I thought were good for the price.

This is a different level of Chromebook, and improves on "budget" models in a number of ways. Of course, it costs almost twice as much, but depending on your needs it might be worth it.

Here's what I'm liking about this model most:

Solid construction: My previous cheap Chromebooks had a cheap, plasticy feel. This thing is solid metal, which makes me a little more confident in it lasting longer (the previous two died after being dropped from a short height, and having a TINY bit of water get on it.) This Dell is MUCH heavier though because of this, but I don't mind that because I'm not traveling with it much.

Nicer screen: The biggest weakness of my previous two Asus Chromebooks was the screen: they were very washed out, limited viewing angle, muted colors, tiny (11-inch), etc. This screen is much nicer, brighter, better colors, etc. I had always been fine with my 11-inch screens for most tasks, but the 15-inch is really nice to have. Of course, this screen isn't at the level of my MacBook's, but for the price, it seems nice.

Touchscreen/Tablet Mode: This wasn't a must-have feature for me, but it has been nice. When doing certain tasks (like when my kids are doing "learning" software), or watching a movie, flipping it into the tablet mode is nice. There's even a smartly stowed stylus. The touch screen is good, not great. I have to touch twice to register a tap sometimes, but it's not too bad.

Here's what's okay:

Performance is good. It seems to do better with video calls than my previous Chromebooks. I can't say I see a HUGE different with any particular task, but I also don't tax the system that much probably. Battery life also seems fine. The ports are also good. USB-C is definitely nice to have, especially since the charger can go on either side of the laptop now!

Here is what I'm not liking as much so far:

Trackpad: The trackpad is actually not as nice, functionality wise, as my cheapo Asus Chromebooks. It's not quite as sensitive, the click is louder, and it requires more pressure. I actually had to return the first one I ordered because the trackpad was loose/rattly. I will say, the trackpad does feel a little more "heavy" or "solid" overall, at least. So, it's not bad, just wish it was a little better.

Keyboard: The keyboard is fine, and I like that it's backlit - never had that on my cheapo Chromebooks I'm a little worried about the space bar, though - it occasionally feels like there's something sticking underneath it, or that depressing it is not as "smooth" as it should be. This comes and goes. Hopefully it goes permanently at some point.

Overall, I feel like the upgrades you get with this Chromebook are probably worth the extra couple hundred bucks. A cheapo Chromebook is still fine for some tasks, but the larger/nice screen, solid construction and touchscreen functionality are certainly nice to have. I would have given it 5-stars across the board if not for the trackpad and the troubling space bar, but maybe those issues will fade.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best underrated Chromebook on the Market
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 26, 2019

Let me first say this is my 3rd Chromebook that I use for work and pleasure. My first was an ACER 13. It was good, but extremely slow. I bought the HP X360 14 Chromebook to replace it. That Chromebook was a very good Chromebook, but I returned it. It was extremely fast, screen was good, keyboard and track pad were excellent, but the screen was very dim, and had screen wobble in the hinges. I bought the Dell Inspirion 14 for my wife for work, but then after spending some time with it, it ended up winning me over. Let me explain.

1. The screen is night and day from the HP X360 Chromebook. The screen on the Dell is so much brighter and the colors seem to pop more. I ran them side by side and at all brightness levels you can clearly see the difference. Since I interact with the screen the most, this was important to me.
2. While the look of the HP Chromebook grew on me with its two toned color choice, the Dell not only looks more premium in person, more professional in person, but it is built like a tank and you can see and feel the difference. I am not saying the HP feels cheap in any way, but the Dell just feels more substantial in the hand.
3. The keyboard is easier to read in bright light on the Dell. This may not be a big issue for some but it is for me. The letters show up more on the black keys on the Dell than they do on the blue keys on the HP. I will say the typing experience on the HP is slightly better than the Dell due the great track pad on the HP. It is made of glass where the Dell's track pad is not.
4. The Dell comes with a built in stylus and digitizer that makes it work. Please not I can also use my Galaxy Note 9's S-Pen on this screen as well. You cannot use a stylus on the HP. Some may not be concerned with this, but at times I need to be able to sign documents, and have my clients sign documents when I am out of the office.

My only 2 complaint are 1. the HP was lighter in weight than the Dell. You will get used to the weight, it is still portable, and if you are coming form a lighter laptop, I would be lying if I said you would not notice the difference, because you will. 2. the wifi is not as strong as the HP. I haven't dropped signals, but I notice the HP kept a stronger signal for farther distances than the Dell. My wifi is upstairs and my home office is down stairs and I still have a good signal as I type this review. You will not loose the signal, I just wanted to be honest as to what I notice between the two.

That's it. I have this Chromebook, my wife has this Chromebook, and my kids now want this Chromebook. It is an excellent alternative for anyone looking for a premium, well built, and fast laptop. I bought i on sale for $400 on one of the sales on Amazon. If you get at that price this is a no brainer. But even at $500 you will enjoy this thoroughly.

I've been a Chromebook user for years and I'm always surprised that when following and reading about what comes on the market I read so many contradictory opinions which - on both sides - do often not represent the reality. Even the reputed Chromebook reviewers often miss the central point. There's not much really positive rating of this CB, except from Notebook-check that rates this CB at 87 percent, mentioning it as a Pixel book alternative, which is absolutely right. What's not to like when it' a bit 'heavy'? I love that as it feels VERY strong which I think it is. Greatly it doesn't take fingerprints and so always remains very clean. It's plain speedy and snappy too with the i-3 8th gen processor but another perhaps best point is the screen brightness, which I need and like. It has perfect color accuracy. That was the main point I was wanting to find, a good Chromebook with a bright screen. This Chromebook is a complete laptop for an average and yet still professional user. For huge workloads and programmers it might not the right thing with 4 RAM but for me this is the most satisfactory Chromebook I've ever had, I much prefer it to my Lenovo Yoga Chromebook. The 4GB is DDR4, so better than the DDR3 and the zram automatically adds 6 GB to the 4 RAM. This software addition on Chrome OS works wonderfully. I honestly think you would need really big tasks to slow it down. When I have 35 tabs open (just to try), nothing goes wrong either.

Had this Chromebook now for over six months and still love it just the same.. I haven't had any occasions for snap or stop working. Dell, you have done a great job with this computer.

Had this Dell Chromebook for almost a year now, and still, there is no other Chromebook that I'd probably prefer, in particular the display is gorgeous, speed is very good ... you just can't get over it that it just has 4GB of RAM. But it works, honestly, very well and speedily.

For a regular user, with no programming or very heavy stuff, this laptop is a delight and such a beautiful, well constructed machine. It's a beauty, believe me. No fingerprints.

tip: Crostini is working well on this CB, but it must be said that this fills up RAM and slows the machine ... if not the Dell Inspiron is unbreakable ... just saying that if you want a very fluent and consistent experience it's better not to install Linux ... just saying

5.0 out of 5 stars Very simple to set up!!!

I am very pleased with my new Dell 14 in Chromebook OS. It was extremely easy to set up as compared to our HP Envy Windows 10 OS laptop. My husband and I both retired and needed a computer for the home. We first purchased a Windows OS laptop since he needed the Excel software. It took me a couple of hours to get the laptop setup and software installed. I had a hard time understanding what to choose in all of the different questions and choices I had to make. After getting it set up the laptop kept making our internet crash. I found out from research that it had something to do the Windows 10 OS. After 2 months of not being able to use the laptop for longer than 15 min at a time. I decided to get a Chromebook. I chose the 14 in over the 11 in because I wanted a bigger screen to read the local newspaper online. The set up was sooooo easy since I have already been using gmail and google drive. All I had to do pretty much is just log in to my Google account. After a couple of minutes I was able to start using my Chromebook. The Chromebook OS does not make my internet crash. I don't think I will every buy a Windows OS computer again. One more thing the touch screen works nicely.

I have used this laptop for almost two months. I would highly recommend this product. The lit keyboard has great functionality and key action. The battery life is excellent, as advertised. Chromebooks utilize hot keys and multi finger control. I really like the fact that I can by using two fingers on the touch/mouse pad to do 99% of all the mouse work, for the other a pop-up window gives directions for the hot keys, stuff like Cntrl C. In summary I can run my apps while keeping the screen clean.

Changing to the Chromebook operating system has eliminated the weekly updates that take over your computer and slow down your system or in my case caused a very long startup, even when changing the setting to a metered connection didn't solve this issue. It was like my computer had Microsoft as the owner and I was a guest user! Chromebooks startup from sleep is faster than you can open the laptop and nearly that fast from power on start.

Given that Chromebooks now has a large amount of memory it can function with local application (no need to be online); I have not found issues with working locally. The only detractor thus far is with the Acrobat DC app wants me to pay for functionality that is free with the other operating system.

As to the cloud memory and limit. I backup-ed my wife's 5 year old laptop and found she had about 500 meg of data. In setting up this computer I put the apps and everything up on the cloud and it came to 2 GB. There shouldn't be a cloud storage size limit issue.

Replacement for a Win7 laptop, no more Microsoft for me.

Update 2020 Jan
Another update note, two items I've noticed over time. One, I really miss having a single DELETE key (yeah, I know there's a shortcut of SEARCH - BACKSPACE but it's just awkard). Two, the weight of the device can be noticeable if you have to carry it around alot. Still, may be a bit hefty but it gives it a tank quality that you don't have to feel like you have to be extra careful with it,

Update 2019 Dec
After using for about a month, I've been more than happy with both the device, performance and reliability. One thing I would strongly recommend is a buying a higher end port replicator if you want to simplify a room to replace a desktop/laptop environment. In my case, I plugged in a bluetooth mouse, a full size USB keyboard, a USB HP printer, two HP HDMI monitors (one using HDMI interface from the CB the other using DVI adapter). Additional devices on bluetooth are Bose wireless headphones and UE Boom wireless speaker. Additional USB connection for 2TBs from a Western Digital MyBook. Performance has been fine, no screen lags with an average of 3-4 tabbed pages running on each external monitor in addition to using the Dell CB screen.
Wish I had done this sooner ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Chromebook Contender in its size class. Tons of features. Premium feel.

Great Chromebook for the price if you need a 14" screen. Has a ton of features such as backlit keyboard and stylus (yes, it is included).

Pros:

* Solid build (bottom is plastic though). Sturdy screen hinge and premium feel to the whole thing.

* Lots of features such as touchscreen (glass), stylus, etc

* Keyboard is comfortable to type

* Bright display, 1080 resolution makes things much easier on the eyes with Chrome OS

* Fast CPU and good amount of memory lets you run dozens of chrome tabs

* Usb-c ports for charging on either side, has lots of storage space compared to other Chromebooks (128gb)

* Battery life true to 10hr usage in a day. Just don't max your screen brightness.

Cons:

* HEAVY. This is definitely a laptop, even though you can fold the screen back to tablet mode. Solid construction but you won't be confusing this for an ultra portable for sure.

* Tinny/Low volume built in speakers. They're underneath the laptop which makes it even harder to hear. Definitely recommend using headphones or external speakers.
