5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible value for money. Now running Android 10.

UPDATE 31/07 - Just received the Android 10 / Color OS 7 update!

After being an iPhone user for nearly 10 years, I was very dubious about making the switch to Android particularly as I tried an Android phone about 8 years ago and just couldn't get on with it so switched back to iOS and have been an iOS user since, well up until now. The good news is Android has come on leaps and bounds and I found the change very easy and actually probably prefer Android now.

To the handset itself. Again I was a bit dubious as I had never heard of Oppo but with the phone specs offered at the recent Amazon sale price of Β£269 I thought it's got to be worth a try. I thought I can always send it back if it's rubbish.

When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the Oppo packaging, very nice and as good as any iPhone I have ever bought. The handset itself is also very well made it feels quality, so no complaints there.

The features you get in this phone are incredible given the price point.

6.5" Amoled screen (notchless) The selfie camera is a pop up 'sharksfin' camera, which is quite cool.
Very good quality Ultrawide camera, 5 x Hybrid zoom which I find sharp up to 5 x zoom. Portrait mode with adjustable Bokeh. 4K 30fps or 1080p 60fps video. The Bokeh mode also works with video. OIS & EIS.
256Gb of storage expandable up to 512Gb with a micro SD card.
8Gb RAM.
Dual SIM.
4000 mAh battery. I have found the battery life to be very good.
Fast charging (Fast charger included).
Headphone socket (Headphones also included).
The phone comes pre-fitted with a screen protector and also included in the box is a good quality phone case, which is just as well as the choice of aftermarket cases is limited. I have also managed to buy an aftermarket silicon case (took a bit of finding) which makes the phone feel much more manageable in the hand than with the included case fitted.

Of course there are some minor downsides.
No 5G but you can't expect it at this price. I live in rural Wales anyway so am lucky to even get 4G!
No wireless charging. Doesn't bother me.
Single speaker, but the sound quality is fine.
The Snapdragon 730G processor is not fastest, but perfectly fine for the kind of stuff I use it for. Again you can't expect the latest super fast processor at this price.
Running Android 9, but it seems an Android 10 update is imminent.

I still can't get over how cheap this handset is, it's amazing. Even at the normal price it is still excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very unique device!

This phone is immediately different from a lot of other phones out there, which is obviously its uninterrupted display and shark fin motorized front-facing camera.

Pros

- Large 6.5" Samsung AMOLED display at 1080x2400
- A bright screen which reaches a max of 800 nits
- 256GB onboard storage with 8GB RAM + room for a MicroSD Card up to 256GB
- Powerful, yet efficient midrange Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G
- A 3.5mm headphone jack
- 4000Mah battery with 20W VOOC quick charge via USB type C
- Android 9 with plans for an upgrade to Android 10
- 5x hybrid zoom and 20x digital zoom camera
- Shark fin designed front camera with a lifespan of 200,000 uses (Opening 60 times a day would last 9 years)
- Comes with a case and a decent pair of earphones with build in-line mic
- Films at 4K at 30FPS or 1080p at 30/ 60 FPS
- The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and back protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5
- NFC
- FM Radio
- Bluetooth 5.0 to support wireless devices

Cons

- ColorOS can be hard to navigate within the settings menu
- No 5G support, not that this is important with a lack of coverage
- No native dark mode, but it is expected with Android 10 and ColorOS 7
- No stereo speakers, just a single down-firing speaker
- Display is 60Hz

The phone is running smoothly without stuttering with opening apps despite not being the latest flagship CPU. It will run all games without issue with the Snapdragon 730G and 8GB RAM. The device quickly unlocks to the desktop via passcode, in-display fingerprint sensor, or face recognition via the Shark Fin front-facing camera. The AMOLED display is very bright with vibrant colours and can be seen perfectly in bright and sunny conditions. I do not remember how much memory was available taking into account of the space used by Android, but it should be about 230GB - 244GB at least for you to use for games, apps, TV shows, films, audiobooks, and photos. I am a heavy user of a phone, and on a single charge, the 4000Mah battery has lasted more than a single day, in fact, at the time of this review, the battery was last charged 1 day, 2 hours and 37 minutes prior, and still has 43% remaining, which the phone predicts to be another 13 hours and 55 minutes before needing another charge. The setup of the phone is very simple and if you have had Android before then you know the procedure. It will ask for a Google account, and if you have previous Android phones, it will ask if you want all your apps downloaded automatically. It is an effortless process, and even so, if you are a new Android user, it will explain how to setup the device. On a final note, you will likely experience a few apps crashing upon the first use on your new device. This is normal and should not happen again if the app is stable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oppo's most underated phone!

This device is a testament of how well the mid ranger devices have matured over the years. Even though it has a 730G chipset, I have never noticed any UI lags whatsoever. The camera quality is excellent in daylight and commendable in low light if you've steady hands (there is always gcam for those scenarios). The Dolby Atmos tuned audio is crisp and great for media consumption, especially over a nice pair of Hi-Fi cans. The screen get very bright and is legible in direct sunlight, the colors pop and HDR content looks superb on this notchless screen. The design of the device is unique and the weight distribution is great as well.

I came into this device from two previous Huawei phones, hence my expectations of battery life will always be high and this device seemed quite average in this regard to me. A 10-12 hour day with a lot of continuous gos tracking over 4G, frequent use of the cameras for phots as well as videos and some social media was enough to drop the battery to lower 20% from 100% (I may sound harsh but my 2 year old Mate 10 lite would still be at 30-35% with such usage). My battery life was worse initially, but once I identified the culprit running in the background (Google and some of it's pesky services), I could limit it's background network usage and the battery life became much, much better.

I would recommend this device to anyone who is an avid consumer of media, likes having a snapy device even during multitasking, wants to take great photos in daylight and some photography during the night. I got this device on a crazy deal at Β£269 as at that price range, nothing even comes close to the wholesome package that this device possesses!

2.0 out of 5 stars Update review after 11 months of use

I bought one of these phones for my wife and after we reviewed her together I decided to buy one for myself and a friend also bought one too.

We were doing a long overdue upgrade of our 5 year old Samsung Galaxy S5, which had problems with shortage of memory, short battery life and was painfully slow!

We found the Oppo Reno 2 easy to use after being used to a Samsung for several years. We had a few issues we could not work out, but emailing the Oppo support team, who are based in India, received quick responses and put us straight and a couple of things we worked out ourselves. E.g. the camera shutter sound does not work when the phone has the do not disturb switched out. Another problem was fixed with a software update.

The main camera is amazing even when using the digital zoom. Phone quality seems OK, which often gets overlooks as being important on this smart phones with their many gizmos!

So far we are pleased with our purchase. As Oppo is a new brand we hope it proves to be reliable and that the company will be around for many years so that our phones will continue to be supported. Would have been happier if the phone had an FM radio, but maybe a future update might put this right!

Update.

I have had issues with the location tracking and sat nav, which thought was software issues, but now I believe either the GPS is faulty or is poor quality. I never had such issues with my Samsung. I use Google Maps for tracking my location and have had several software updates, but these have not fixed the problem, which is that sometimes I go out and my phone has no tracking at all (shows me being at home all day!), but when it does track it is sometimes accurate and other times not. For example parts of my walk/drive are missing or points on my route are joined up with just a straight line or these straight lines overshoot where I actually walked/drove (the red lines drawn on the attached maps show this). The problem with the Sat Nav (Maps or Here Now) is the GPS signal keeps being lost and this causes serious issues when you are driving and you no longer have guidance of where to go next!

I notice that Oppo have since set up a UK Customer Support, which I thought would be an improvement, but it isn't. When support was from India I had a speedy response. I have contacted the UK support team twice via social media to ask for their advice regarding these issues, but I have had zero response. I am trying to find out if there is any corrective actions or tests I can perform, before resorting to returning the phone under warranty.

For the above faults and poor Customer service I have reduced the star rating and I would not recommend Oppo phones. A shame because this phone has a great camera and has performed OK as a phone and with all other apps I have used, but tracking and Sat Nav are very important to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amazing build quality, just faulted but the poor battery performance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ on July 27, 2020

This phone is amazing for the current price, but it does have a major flaw, the battery life, I had a Oppo reno 10x Zoom before this one and it was the same, poor battery life, I think it's the bloatware/skin on this phone, both of these phones get really warm just by doing simple tasks, like watching videos on YouTube and you can see the battery taking a hit when it gets this warm, it makes no sense, the Reno 10x has a flagship CPU and it shouldn't break a sweat when watching YouTube, so it had to be something else, so I got the Reno 2 which has a smaller screen and a more power efficient CPU, but same thing happened, phone gets really warm with normal use and battery takes a hit when this happens, I know that the hardware is power efficient, so it just leaves ColorOS that sits on top of Android, this skin has to be the problem, shame, because OPPO phones are very well built.

Another thing to take into account is updates, forget about monthly updates, if you're lucky, every 3 months and only now (July 2020) Oppo is releasing Android 10, when Android 11 is only a couple of months away, so even though they are run by BBK, the same company that owns Vivo and OnePlus, the software updates are pretty bad, compared to OnePlus.

And final annoyance with this phone is the pretty weak vibration motor, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom had a tight vibration, just like an iPhone and even my current Xiaomi Redmi 9 Pro, as a much better motor.

It is a good phone, with an awesome AMOLED screen and great cameras, but the software, poor battery and slow updates, it just ruins it for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb oppo Reno 2
Reviewed in the United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ on January 24, 2021

I bought this essentially to replace my 4 year old but brilliant Huawei mate10 pro.
I had actually recently received a new iPhone xr with a new mobile contract and whilst it was ok,I much prefer android and the controls of the iPhone drive me bonkers with all of that nonsense swiping to do the simplest of tasks.
So I did my research and found this little beauty the oppo Reno 2!
The software is easy to use, basically the oppo skin runs almost stock android and it's build quality is superb. The camera is excellent which surprised me as the Huawei had the best camera I've ever used, but the oppo matches it.Im glad the oppo also has the auto scene selection as it just speeds up your photography when you are grabbing quick shots.
The pio up selfie camera is excellent. Its also used for face recognition and it works quickly and flawlessly.
Finally a word on the storage.. it's a massive 256gb as standard and that is frankly astonishing for a phone of any price never mind the Β£290 I paid for this one.
Overall,I'm very pleased with this distinctive phone and to be quite honest you would be mad to pay more for a mobile.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Future Is Bright For Oppo

This phone absolutely smashes the other phones on the market not only by price and features but their unique design! The camera lenses do no stick out they are flush with the device! The Phone feels premium and well made has a good weight to size ratio. The loud speaker is loud and has a nice amount of mid range cant say bass because its a phone but you can defiantly hear the depth in the voice of people and music. The battery is amazing! I have had days out of this with not being shy on the internet and taking photos. Apart from the obvious hidden selife camera that mechanically pops out there is one feature that needs a mention and that is video Stabilisation! It is out of this world! I thought Sony had the throne for this but Oppo has done some crazy saurcery and has well outdone my expectations on video image stabilisation. Oppo Reno 2 is the best phone ever! I hope they keep all the things that make this unique with Oppo Reno or 4 because this is why I bought this! No camera notch in the screen. Flush cameras on the back.

i hummed and haa'd before getting this phone, as I'm on 3 and it can be a nightmare with compatibility, particularly with Wi-Fi calling. Should'nt have worried, right out of the bag, sim card in, fired up and all working 100%.

its fast, android 10 software upgrade on start up, fingerprint reader miles better than my wife's samsung a41, and the camera (which was one of the main selling points) is superb. Reviewers also comment about ColorOS, but its fine, no worse than EMUI on Honor/Huwawei, and maybe a little better in what it offers overall.

so pleased and the price was superb.

update...all went well until 2 days after purcgase the screen died!!!! after a lot to to-ing and fro-ing with Amazon, new phone will be with me on tuesday...lets see what happens!
