This stuff really is just the caviar of face oils. It smells like heaven (neroli and jasmine), feels silky, looks fantastic on your bathroom shelf or bedside table - and makes your skin look all dewy and plumped when you use it in your skincare rituals. I purchased it on a whim after a particularly fruitful period of work and I absolutely adored it to the last drop. There's something about using a $200 face oil that also just makes you FEEL good, like your life must be going super well and your priorities are all in line. It puts a spring in your step. And the scent - oh the lush, intoxicating scent of it!
That having been said, I do have a few caveats about recommending this. The first one is that it's probably honestly not worth the price. When creating skincare products it can be difficult to maintain shelf stability, so sometimes buying is a lot better than DIY since many companies have that science down. In this case, though, it's a blend of readily available oils and you really could genuinely make this yourself for significantly cheaper. You would just want to be very sure to use a blue or brown bottle to protect your oils from being damaged by the sun - and when in doubt, keep your oils in the fridge. That leads me to my next point - the clear glass container looks lovely but it's not the best way to store a face oil. Unless you live in a sunless basement (and oddly enough I do!) it's going to be hard to keep Rodin Oil from deteriorating from sunlight. Lastly, the scent really really works for me but it's very perfumey and may not be for everyone. You have to really commit to loving jasmine and neroli or you're not going to be too happy.
I am 50 years old and over the past decade or so, as my face and neck have started to really show signs of aging, I have become a bit of a skincare junkie. I have used more skincare products than I can count ranging from inexpensive drugstore versions, to some of the world's most costly 'miracle' lotions, potions, and serums. Some of them have done great things, others not so much. Honestly, my purchase of Rodin was mostly motivated by the aroma as I'm a bit obsessed with the delightful fragrance. I expected it's quality as a product to be good but approximately similar to any other good oil or moisturizer I have used in the past. This product exceeded my expectations.
My skin, even in my 20s and 30s, tends to run quite dry and dehydrated. I was also competitive swimmer a bit of a sun worshiper in my youth and my neck and chest have a significant amount of sun damage. Both are quite red and tend to look as if I have a constant blotchy sunburn and both are quite wrinkled. Honestly, my neck and chest look at least 10 years older than the rest of me. I used my Rodin olio lusso for the first time right before bed. I followed the directions someone else posted in their review and used 3 or 4 drops on my face and maybe 5 or 6 drops on my chest/neck and applied it over very damp skin. When I woke up in the morning my skin looked noticeably more "radiant, moist (not oily) and youthful." So much so my boyfriend commented on it. I have been using the product for nearly a week now and I can also say that it has *significantly* reduced the redness on my chest and neck. Is it magic? Not quite but pretty darned close. Suddenly my chest/neck don't immediately jump out as noticeably older than my face.
I know that one product isn't "the" product for everybody, but if you have aging skin that's sun damaged and tends to run dry or dehydrated I strongly suggest giving this product a try. This is one of those products (along with Revive's night cream which I use every other night) that will NOT get rotated out of my skincare regimen. I loved it so much that I also purchased the creme (lotion) and body oil...I'm loving them too. In addition I purchased the hair oil, I like it but a) it doesn't have the same fabulous aroma and b) it's nice but its nothing special; no better or worse than Moroccan Oil so I don't see the need to spend the extra for Rodin.
This is like the greatest smelling thing ever- especially if you like gardenias. I wished my entire body smelled like this( they do make a body oil, I have yet to splurge on I though). Although the Olio Lusso is very expensive, ordering from Amazon I got it for so much less than when I typically get it at Barneys.
Besides the amazing smell, it is a good skin product. I really love putting this on right after washing my face, so the oil gets absorbed right away. I have very dry skin and have no problems with acne or anything so I really love oils. Although I layer moisturizing products on top of this, it does a great job as a base moisturizer and I love the naturalness of the product.
My big complaint is that the product leaks out of the dropper- which not only is slightly messy but with something this expensive it is annoying. I have heard from my facialist that it is better to apply product directly to face rather than hands then face so the intended area receives more product penetration. Because of the dripping dropper...to not lose any of the product you have to put it on your hands first and then your face. Another issue I have with the packaging (which is beautiful to look at) is that because the bottle is clear you should store it in a dark place, so sunlight exposure does not ruin the integrity of the product. I have read about other reviewers receiving off bottles and am guessing that could be from either oxidation or sunlight exposure.
