An expansive view of the Western world, and a debunking of a whole host of popular myth. Kirk's erudition and integrative perspective come together beautifully in RoAO. He does a great job creating an overall narrative and framework, while keeping things interesting and varied by diving into specific individual's stories. The combined high-level story/fine-level detail kept me engaged.

Especially for those of us who will never have the time to make a dent in the vast bibliography, this is an excellent synopsis. But it is more than a synopsis, it is a story and a point of view.

Even for my non-American friends, particularly those from the English-speaking countries, there is a lot here for you, too.

An exceptionally well written history of the ideas that shaped our American order. As Russell Kirk summarizes it is a story of five cities. Jerusalem for the revealed source of order -- Athens for arts and science -- Rome for government -- London where these influences grew and coalesced -- Philadelphia where the American order, society and government was birthed. The ideas are clearly presented and connections become so obvious that this reader is embarassed to admit he had not previously apprehended or appreciated them.
If you missed American (and to a certain extent western civilization) history in your education -- this book is worth your time.

So, many Americans simply think that a herd of great men just decided to go to Philadelphia in 1787, and invented all the great and good ideas which became the U. S. Constitution? Russell Kirk accurately traces our real foundings, dating back to the Greeks and Romans. Cicero was an early commentator on Natural Law and Constitutional forms. His philosophy greatly, and properly, influenced European, then subsequently, American Constitutional thought and action. But more than this, his historical view through the ages of Conservative philosophy, as opposed to politcal leanings, is what really pleased me. Many of today's so-called conservative politicians should invest in the philosophy of Conservative thought and action. The beliefs should drive the politics; not the other way around. Kirk has provided us with THE work on the genesis of Americanism through the ages. Get this book!
