I didn't realize what was wrong until I started reading some other reviews, and read about an o-ring problem. When the new one arrived, I swapped the o-ring to see if it was the culprit, and immediately the one that had been failing worked good as new again.
So, I took some measurements and tried to find the correct o-ring at home depot, but they didn't have it. I bought a pack of 100 off amazon ( 022 Buna-N O-Ring, 70A Durometer, Black, 1" ID, 1-1/8" OD, 1/16" Width (Pack of 100) ), but if you have a good hardware store close by, it is a dash 022 o-ring, which is a 1 inch ID x 1 1/8 OD, with a 1/16 cross section. To access, remove the two screws on the bottom of the unit, pull out the plastic a bit, and you will immediately see the o-ring that needs to be replaced.
Now we have three units that work very well, so I am putting this unit in the bathroom. I have no more issues with the unit, and I actually don't mind the o-ring that much since it is simple to replace compared to worn gear teeth, etc. I plan on getting another unit for a basement sink I plan on putting in.
I've still got 99 more o-rings, so if you need one, leave a comment, and I'll send one out to you! (or you can buy your own pack for less than $5)
My tear-down of both units revealed a common flaw. The root cause of the failures is a small o-ring belt that becomes stretched over time and fails to transmit power from the electric motor to the impeller. So, the design is flawed because it relies on a belt and pulley system. A better design would have used cogs and gears to transmit power from the little motor to the impeller.
Until Simplehuman changes the design, the pump will fail after a relatively short period of time. Honestly, these things should last 3-4 years before failing. You won't be getting your money's worth with this design.
These units are not cheap and I was willing to pay more to get a quality product from a quality company. Clearly, SimpleHuman is not standing behind these units.
Beware! If something goes wrong, you will not get support.
The ability to adjust the amount dispensed is nice. Battery life is excellent.
Also, 5 year warranty from simplehuman is nice (don't forget to register to validate it!)
The ONLY downside is that certain soaps will "gunk up" on the dispenser spout, and need to be cleaned off periodically. I used one brand of dish soap for a short amount of time that had this issue, but have since changed brands and it's all good again.
simplehuman will tell you to buy their dish soap to prevent this. If it's a good deal, go for it, but I don't think that's necessary for this dispenser to work. I've owned two of these dispensers over the years, and have only had issues once. Use whatever soap you like. If it doesn't work well, clean it out and try something else.
