"The "Not Seen on TV" Band of Brothers ..." - By DACHokie
I read Ambrose's "Band of Brothers" before HBO made Easy Company a household name. While HBO's presentation was simply mesmerizing, subsequent books written by Easy Company members not only fill gaps, but set the record straight on several misrepresentations in Ambrose's book and the mini-series. With AIRBORNE, Ed Shames, the only Easy Company officer still living, shares his Band of Brothers experience and provides a more expansive look at the famed unit's exploits.

Shames was not a primary figure in the mini-series. He is portrayed (maligned) briefly in one rather insignificant scene as a competent/capable officer that screamed at his men. While author Ian Gardner mentions this in the book's beginning, AIRBORNE in not an attempt to change the image presented by the series, but an effort to reveal the full, untold story of Shames' service. I found AIRBORNE filling a lot of gaps ... full review

"airborne, paratrooper, Nijmegen, Netherlands, glider" - By Gary E. Binder (Waverly, NE USA)
There are a number of books about Operation Market-Garden, the valiant effort to liberate Holland and to open a pathway into Germany. Many concentrate on the British efforts at Arnhem and the tragic results there, Few books look at the US airborne effort that provided the little success that Market-Garden had. In this short volume Zaloga provides an overview of the US airborne contribution. Several important actions are studied in detail as are the problems faced by the Allied commanders. An excelent addition to anyones' library of WW2 subjects.

"Re: Dr Robert A. Forczyk's Review" - By Mat (UK)
I noticed a few errors in Dr Forcyk's review, so feel urge to write a few correction in the hope that people will not be mislead.
    Montgomery's strategy:
Refer to the Post D-Day phase lines, which suggested that Montgomery did intend to hold round Caen and thus attract the German armour, while allowing the American armies in the West to seize Cherbourg, as having a working port was vital to the success of the Invasion (though this did not work as the Germans destroyed Cherbourg rather effectively).
The so called "myth" about Montgomery's original strategy failing stemmed from arguments at command level based on the success of certain battles (eg Goodwood) failing to live up to Montgomery's hype. This was purely down to Montgomery's sometimes arrogant nature which upset certain people (Tedder, Patton etc). For rather obvious reasons, Montgomery could not publish his strategies at the time (the Germans would ... full review

"At last..." - By P. Chapman
a book on Varsity, in English, that covers the exploits of both airborne divisions. I read this author's previous book and it's pleasing to see that the use of veterans' accounts (well over fifty) has, similarly, been made good use of in this book. Yes, there is more on 6th Airlanding Brigade's tasks, but the discrepancy in coverage is, honestly, explained by the author in his introduction. I find it difficult to see how the previous reviewer can say that `most of the book is taken from the magazine The Eagle' (it's the journal of the Glider Pilots Regimental Association). The author received permission to quote from it, and what he did quote were veterans' accounts. It is quite obvious that the book has been well researched to give the reader a balanced account of this rarely covered operation. I also think that the separating of the divisions' tasks ... full review

"and is a must for anyone with an interest in this fine Division. It's obvious from the outset that the ..." - By A G R Berry
From his very first book, to his latest, Phil Nordyke has never failed to deliver in terms of accurate, well researched, well written and detailed histories of the 82nd Airborne Division and it's sub-units. This book continues that trend, and is a must for anyone with an interest in this fine Division. It's obvious from the outset that the level of research involved is massive, some of which must have come at Nordykes personal expense. This book seamlessly ties pictures, with text, and gives readers a multi-dimensional insight into not only the combat history of the Division but also it's time during activation, training, and in camp. Previously unpublished photographs of the 82nd are rare, but this book contains many, and the volumes to follow look set also to contain many more that are unseen.

To date, this book stands are the most comprehensive photographic history of the Division ... full review

"Accurate information" - By Off the Iron Curtain (Berlin, Germany)
As a German TV author working on a documentary about Cold War aerial operations "Behind Enemy Lines" I looked for material and reliable information on acitivities, also during the Korean War. This book was one of my most helpful sources, as was his author.

I agree I have read better written books, but some of these better written publications, like Orr Kellys "From A Dark Sky", lack fact checking. E.g Kellys account of a U-2 ditching turned out to be a myth.

In general: these operations are difficult to research, all human sources have by necessity a limited field of vision, but are often the best sources available and superior to sanitized files - so I think cautious reading and restraint in judgement are wise attitudes.

Colonel Dillard is a very good source. I recommend this DTP style booklet for anyone looking for facts about the Korean ... full review

"Book Description" - By Theseus (US of A)
As World War II unfolded in Europe during the late 1930s and early 1940s, U.S. military planners realized the nation's airlift and airborne combat capability was underdeveloped and out of date. The U.S. Army Air Forces relied largely on civil airline equipment and personnel to launch the Air Transport Command's intercontinental routes to overseas combat zones. A separate Troop Carrier Command and newly formed airborne divisions hammered out doctrinal concepts and tactical requirements for paratroop engagements. Despite operational shortcomings, subsequent airborne assaults in North Africa and Italy generated a base of knowledge from which to plan such massive aerial formations and paratroop drops as those for the Normandy invasion and Operation MARKET-GARDEN, and strategic efforts in the China-Burma-India theater. Airlift routes over the Himalayas demonstrated one of the war's most effective uses of air transport. The Air Transport Command emerged as a remarkably successful organization with thousands of aircraft and ... full review

"Fascinating" - By Mac Simpson (Honolulu, HI United States)
I recently saw a show on The History Channel where they interviewed the author. During the next commercial break, I went online and ordered this book. It's very good. Lots of detail—it's about spies—and I'm reading it slowly to capture everything.
