To begin with, I live in Thailand, and so almost all of the "seasonal" advice in this book is useless --- except for the general idea, which is all-important: buy high-quality ingredients when they are in season. In Thailand, that would translate to "wait for the hot season before gorging yourself on mangoes, or mango-with-sticky-rice." Most Thai fruits have seasons when they are at their best, so pay attention.
This includes the basic idea of "don't just go to the market and buy an onion." Some folks see an onion and grab it instantly, checking off that chore. Others inspect the onions carefully, waiting until they see a really gorgeous (and delicious-looking) batch. If all the onions look like junk, it might be time to put off onion soup to another day!

It's a fun read, and I have all Alice Waters' books, save one. It's a (slight) shade on the pretentious side, but I couldn't break up the "set" of Waters' books. I'll enjoy having it.(2) -

It's true. You really can't go wrong with Alice. Her appreciation for the freshest, finest ingredients grown and prepared with care never fails to shine through in her books. This book is organized beautifully (alphabetically by vegetable, recipes listed from simplest to most complex), and she provides a clear and inspired introduction to each vegetable at the start of every chapter, including notes about seasonality, caring for it in your garden, and preparation tips. A must for any lover of food!(66) -

I absolutely love this book! It truly shows you a better way of cooking and eating. The first recipe (viniagrette dressing) is so delicious it has me looking at fresh homemade food in a different way. This book has given me a goal of slowly removing processed food from my diet.(41) -

List Price: $17.00 Price: $10.05 You Save: $6.95 (41%) "Alice Waters and the food revolution" - By Glittergirl (Edgewood, WA)
This is an inspiring and clear-eyed view of the woman who is indisputably linked to the revolution in American cuisine. Before Alice Waters, thinking about organic food, local food, support for small farms, eating seasonal foods, food as essential to a return to civility, did not pervade the collective consciousness of our society. The book paints her, warts and all, breathtakingly well and Alice gets into your mind leaping off the pages to look over your shoulder as you buy and prepare dinner. Her revolution is not about food. It is about life and how to live it. It's a great read.(49) -

List Price: $55.00 Price: $12.99 You Save: $42.01 (76%) "A Sumptuous Feast...." - By RAND H. (WHITE BEAR LAKE, MN USA)
Just spent the afternoon with this gorgeous book and feel as if I've whiled away the day lingering over a sparkling champagne lunch with Alice and friends. I've only had the pleasure of dining with them once - what a shame, considering the many trips I've made to San Francisco. I had expected a book of essays with pictures sprinkled throughout but instead found a virtual trip back in time, a beautiful, evocative picturebook with essays sprinkled here and there. If you're expecting recipes, I'd recommend one of the many Chez Panisse cookbooks as there isn't a recipe to be found here. And you won't mind, either. Worth every penny. I'm ready to start packing for a quick trip to Berkley. Merci beaucoup, Alice!(17) -

I love Alice Waters, her slow food philosophy, and use her cookbooks constantly. My daughter has the hard-bound copy I purchased years ago and has loved this book since she was very young. I bought this one to have a copy for myself. If you love slow food and want to read great stories about Alice Waters and her daughter and her experiences growing up in the restaurant business I highly recommend this book.(30) -

I am writing a blog every day about my attempt at a recipe from either Alice Waters' Vegetables book or this one, Fruits. I am terrified, intimidated and often not a success; however, I am learning so much about what to look for when shopping, what macerating is, etc. And, I am teaching myself how to make her recipes a bit easier to manage for a midwestern mom of two boys.
