"Excellent (but a bit depressing)" - By Amazon Customer
This very interesting novel is about Martha Jefferson, daughter to Thomas Jefferson. Though it is a work of historical fiction, it is a very-well researched book and, according to the book's authors (interview attached to the book description here on Amazon), it is based upon thousands of actual letters written by Thomas Jefferson (the letters being edited by his family after Jefferson's death).

The authors state that the thousands of letters written by Jefferson, and preserved by his family, were their greatest resources in writing this book and that, through his letters, they were able to see how Jefferson changed over time. They state that some dialogue is taken directly from the letters.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I learned a lot about the time period, about Thomas Jefferson (and his family) and about his daughter, Martha. I found it to be well-written, ... full review

"Read me!" - By mandyteach1 (Chicago, IL USA)
This is a really cool book! I was looking for a nonfiction book to read with my third grade LD students and happened upon this little gem. I love the stories - they are very accessible, not too long, but not too short. They keep the readers' attention and engage kids in conversation about the presidents. A really fun find!

"Excellent book on the presidents" - By Billie (Brevard, NC, USA)
I love this book. I am a 38 year old female who loves American history. It goes beyond the basic facts on the presidents. The only things that I don't like: 1) There are quite a bit of spelling and grammar errors. I overlook them because I love the book so. 2) I think the authors could have done a better job on the chapter about President elect Donald Trump. There should have been a section devoted to First Lady to be Melania Trump, as each of the other First Ladies had sections on them. Otherwise, a great book. Tv informative.

"A great book" - By Hawkes (Belle Valley)
Professor Gutzman has done America a great service by writing this book revealing the process and events of the making of America as a constitutional republic and the life and contribution of James Madison.

We are informed of Madison's early success as an advocate of religious liberty in Virginia.

This book illuminates the conflict between the Federalists and the Anti Federalists. We see Madison the nationalist arriving at Philadelphia with his Virginia plan and the New York delegation , minus Hamilton, insisting that the work of creating a new form of government was contrary to their Congressional instructions. They argue for adherence to the mission of only modifying the Articles of Confederation.

We see Hamilton speak for 6 hours informing the delegates at the Constitution Convention that the British government is the most perfect on earth and advocating the delegates establish an American monarchy patterned after Great ... full review

"More to history" - By Kindle Customer
Good read. A story of American determination. Jefferson was by far the most visionary of America's presidents. His vision fundamentally changed America.

"putting a fresh face on a tale told many times" - By Arnold (Springfield, MA)
There have been thousands of books written about 1968, Richard Nixon, and the Vietnam War. So, the first question is: why should you buy this book? In Nixonland, Rick Perlstein really manages to add something new and fresh to this conversation. Rather than rehashing what we'd all learned in high school, Perlstein focuses on social movements during the era. In particular, he takes care to show that the chaos of the 60s was not just the result of the hippies, New Left, Black Panthers, and other liberals. He shows that conservatives likewise organized a countermovement to confront leftists. Some of those incidents, lost to history, are shocking. In one case, a group of construction workers pummeled students protecting the Vietnam War, injuring dozens. Perlstein makes clear the violence of the era - on both sides - and puts to rest the belief that polarization today has reached new highs. If ... full review

"President Roosevelt in Yosemite" - By Kate Coombs (Utah, United States)
President Theodore Roosevelt was an outdoorsman, everyone knows that. But did you know he once went camping with John Muir in Yosemite? Why? Because Muir was a famous naturalist, and Roosevelt wanted to know more about America's wilderness. At stake was the potential creation of national parks and forests. The two men traveled by horseback and were caught in a spring snowstorm, but they had a wonderful time, and President Roosevelt worked very hard afterwards to preserve the nation's natural treasures. One word of caution: though notes about the trip were available, they did not include sufficient dialogue, and the author did invent fireside conversations between the two men. I think she's done a marvelous job of writing this important, little-known story; just be sure your students or children understand the ways in which it is, as Rosenstock says in her very helpful author's note, "based in truth." Veteran picture ... full review

"FRIENDLY FOES - POWER AFTER THE PRESIDENCY" - By V. L. Wilson (Devon, Pennsylvania USA)
Absorbing, detailed and factual - this interesting book describes how ex-presidents co-operate with one another and, for the good of the country, will neither offend nor criticize an incumbent.

Although I chose to read the book on my Kindle Fire, I recommend a hardcover version to share with others. Having lived thru decades of presidents, I knew quite a bit of the more recent acts of friendship and cooperation between Carter/Ford, Clinton/Bush, Eisenhower/Truman, etc. but there were some surprises! I especially enjoyed the chapter on Herbert Hoover and am sending for his biography - a great man whose gifts to the nation have gone largely unnoticed.

If you enjoy reading about the American presidents and especially what they accomplish after their stint in the White House ends, then you may agree with me, this is one of the better books published on the subject - ... full review
