Excellent text book. Extremely important to anyone that study both animal and human behavior.

Ps.There is some people that don't like the writing stile of the author. He explain the concepts through several examples. If you don't like a lot of examples then maybe you should prefer other text books.(84) -

I have only read this book once, and its emotional impact was so massive that I need to read it a second time to take away the principles and concepts he illustrates through his examples. The impact of the book comes from its premise, one that I share: that animals are "whos", not "its." And so it is exquisite and thrilling to wade into disinterested, scholarly presentations of fellow creatures' 'who-nesses' but it is equally agonizing to juxtapose those with the ravages our species has so often wrought upon our magnificent fellow creatures. It was difficult for me to hold on to the intellectual or conceptual points he was making, even though he made them pointedly, clearly, and repeatedly. This, though, is not a negative criticism of Dr. Safina's book as much as it is the nature of encountering this groundbreaking work. It presents ... full review(195) -
"For a textbook on Evolution and Behavior, this is not bad!" - By J. C. Kaminski (Boston, MA)
I'm taking an advanced psychology class on Evolution and Behavior and had to buy this book in addition to reading many articles and postings on various topics. This textbook is actually very informative yet easy to understand (relatively speaking). Dugatkin includes a wide variety of different animals to illustrate the bases of behavior and provides solid background about different species.(29) -

List Price: $22.95 Price: $13.40 You Save: $9.55 (42%) "Nice language, illustrations" - By AnaBH (South Dakota)
There is so, so much about animal behavior that we don't know! The Secret Language of Animals: A Guide to Remarkable Behavior by Janine M. Benyus is a unique book. The language is captivating and story-like, keeping the reader interested. No dry, encyclopedic language here--although of course that has its purpose as well. One of my favorite features of this book are the occasional "insets", stories set apart in a darker shaded area, usually entitled "Humans and... [name of animal]", but not always, as there are some similar to "What's important about manes", or "The Illusionist" (about peacocks and whats ancient Greeks thought about them), one about how important Komodo monitors are for the area's ecology, and many more. These are curious and tell us interesting stories about animal or the interactions between humans and animals. This a great book for anyone who loves animals and wants to learn about ... full review(32) -

We just switched to this book for our animal behavior classes. Unlike the previous books this one is written with the undergraduate audience in mind. It has lots of examples and pictures as well as drawings. The price is good, the content is readable. The students found the sample readings to be fun and easy to follow. I would use Alcock for a graduate level course but for a non-majors undergraduate class this book was the best choice.(6) -

I was looking forward to this book because of some of the authors, such as Karen Overall, and indeed, some of the chapters have good information. This book is geared for the average dog owner, not a more advanced dog trainer. This is definitely a positive dog training approach, and that's great. Alas, some authors seem to have more book or theoretical knowledge and less actual dog training experience. Many authors use a clinical, positive but unemotional approach to their writing and it some cases, clearly their training as well. Dogs aren't "Lassie", but they aren't simple input-output machines either. Some "positive" trainers don't seem to share that viewpoint. For a great explanation of this, check out Denise Fenzi's blog post "The Happy Emotions - A Party For Two." Fenzi is an outstanding trainer.
In this book, each chapter has a ... full review(301) -

Price: $0.00 "Pretty good for 1906!" - By WildBirdsHawaii
This is a straight-forward report of basic research on a species of mice that have an unhealthy mutation that makes them spin and wobble constantly. Apparently they were deliberately bred (after being discovered) for amusement. As is typical of the times, author is a little wordy, but it is amazing that I could not tell it was old until author mentioned a date. It is also interesting how he had to go about setting up his experiments with limited apparatus and supplies. Wonder how he'd feel watching today's scientists with their equipment. He should be pleased his work survives and mice are still being researched. What he found about these mice is known to everyone working in the field.(1) -

This is a well-written, well-organized, well-researched book on companion animal behavior. Given the editors and contributors, I expected it to be an invaluable resource for those who work in shelters, but I was surprised that so much of the information is broadly applicable to many other settings. I'd recommend this book to anyone who works with cats and dogs professionally -- and to anyone who has a real interest in animal behavior.(9) -
