"Beautiful Film" - By Oakville Falls (ROBBINSVILLE, NC, United States)
I stumbled upon this film while browsing amazon; I had not heard anything about it. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I connected to the characters and the gorgeous setting. The film really drew me in. The script was engaging and the characters were three dimensional. I would highly recommend this film.(153) -
"Lt. Robert Nunally: "Your wife? Is she OK? " --- Ted Crawford: "I don't think she is. I shot her."" - By Annie Van Auken (Planet Earth)
FRACTURE (USA/Germany-2007 is one of my favorite Anthony Hopkins movies, one in which he's a calculating, cold-blooded killer who plays an elaborate courtroom game with hotshot Asst. DA Ryan Gosling.
Knowing his younger wife is having an affair with a police detective, Hopkins awaits her arrival home and shoots her in the left cheek. The bullet travels through her brain and lodges against the skull, but she doesn't die.
The cop boyfriend arrives to investigate a reported shooting, not realizing who the victim is. Naturally he's upset when he sees his lover lying near death. Hopkins cooly admits to shooting her, has the weapon nearby. At the police station he willingly signs a confession.
Meanwhile, Gosling is a lawyer on the way up. He likes nothing better than to win in court, and his 97% success rate shows he's good at it. After destroying in trial the ... full review(805) -
"Mamet plus Hopkins & Baldwin create a duel of survival in the wilderness" - By Dennis W. Wong
When It was announced that Anthony Hopkins would appear in an action thriller written by David Mamet with support from Alec Baldwin (Glengarry Glen Ross)--I looked forward to a brilliant effort--and I wasn't disappointed at all. Mamet has fashioned a "Deliverance" type thriller but with a twist in that it's about how two men survive in the wilderness and then how they survive each other. Hopkins finds his niche in Mamet's language and of course, Baldwin, who was already brilliant in Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross" matches him in artistry and wit. In it's own way, "The Edge" is more of a theatrical piece/play than the 1972 classic with Jon Voight and Burt Reynolds, but it's still very good thanks to the two leads and fine direction by Lee Tamohori (We Were Warriors;Along Came A Spider). Hopkins in fact later saw it on video and proclaimed to ... full review(944) -
"Great film! Great acting by Anthony Hopkins and Debra ..." - By Jonathan Levinson
Great film! Great acting by Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. I'm not sure the film adequately represented Lewis' core Christianity, however I wept buckets while watching. (Also, Lewis' was not a prig. He was the kind of man who would bring bottles of beer to hobos, and drink with them. Yes, he was a great intellect, but his earthiness was not represented well. His writings on Christianity are so vivid because he was in touch with life.)(338) -
"A fascinating character study of duty vs. emotion" - By Reading Rocks (Millbrae, CA United States)
This movie is about a butler (Anthony Hopkins) who manages a great house in England and views his duty and service above all else. He is privy to world events by way of his boss, Lord Darlington, and has to deal with the housekeeper, Miss Kenton (played by Emma Thompson). It covers the time period from the late 1930's to the early 1950's. Anthony Hopkins is so perfect as the butler. He evokes a repressed air about him and a sense of strict duty from which he will not waiver. I suspect that it's probably how many servants both before and during that time period functioned. The film evokes that time period beautifully. The electricity between Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson is palatable. If you enjoy Downton Abbey, you will love this movie for its alternate look at people who are in ... full review(489) -
"Worth owning a personal copy, one you'll want to watch again and again!" - By Kcorn (Here)
This isn't the type of film where you are mildly entertained and then forget about the movie within a day or two of seeing it. Instead, the directors have tackled the formidable challenge of adapting a successful Broadway show to screen and, in the process, it sometimes works in much better ways than the stage play, broadening the possibilities and losing some of the claustrophia of the limited stage sets.
It is hard to say exactly what 'genre" this play fits as it equal parts thriller, mystery and exploration of the human spirit.
On the surface, the film focuses on a formerly briliant mathematical genius (played by Anthony Hopkins) who went from flashes of brilliance in his early 20s to utter insanity as he got older (with brief remissions). His daughter seems to show promise as well but she fears that the same mental instablility ... full review(176) -
"Excellent!" - By S Kirsteen
The acting, the production, the story and the photography were outstanding. I wondered if Anthony Hopkins somehow had an influence on Anton Yelchin (who played the boy, Bobby), he was exceptionally good in his role. Superb acting all round! In a way it is a simple story, but it is powerful and very moving. I actually ended up watching it twice in 24 hours, which is a rare occurrence for me. I highly recommend this film - don't rent it, buy it!(404) -
"Ralph Fiennes and Anthony Hopkins are great" - By Mike S. (Minneapolis, MN)
This was the third movie in which Anthony Hopkins played Hannibal Lecter, yet the first book in the sequence. The only thing that did not feel genuine was the fact that Anthony Hopkins was older trying to play a younger version of Lecter. If you don't let that bother you however then you have a movie that, while not as good as Silence of the Lambs, was still very good.
Edward Norton plays his foil Will Graham, the man who "captures" Lecter. We see that sequence in the beginning of the movie, which is different than what was shown in the 1986 film Manhunter which was a different adaptation of the movie. After nearly being killed by Lecter, when he stumbles onto figuring out who he is, Graham comes out of retirement to catch the "tooth fairy" played wonderfully by Ralph Fiennes.
Hopkins steps right back into the ... full review(836) -
"Having Read the Book I wanted to Satisfy My Curiosity About the Transfer to Film" - By R. J. Marsella (California)
Philip Roth's book The Human Stain was a fictional examination of racial/social and sexual biases in American culture with more than a dose of hypocrisy thrown in. I expected it to be a difficult novel to translate to film and I believe I was partially right.
The casting is excellent and Nicole Kidman is very good as Faunia Farley a bit of a lost soul being stalked by her violent and insane ex-husband who gets involved with an older college professor who has just lost his position due to an abnormally ridiculous case of Political Correctness. Anthony Hopkins is fabulous in that role although as the plot unfolds it becomes a bit harder to see him as the older version of his younger self as portrayed in flashback sequences. (Trying hard not to give too much away here).

"What if Hades didn't take Persephone?" - By brainout (Houston)
EDIT: this EDIT concerns the special features on the Ultimate Edition, which I just got. (The original review is about the movie itself, below.) The casing for the DVD set is very annoying, worse than normal DVDs when you try to remove each DVD without scratching it. DVD quality is just like the movie shown publicly, or a tad crisper. Nice to watch it, uncut. Nice to be able to select scenes and rewatch, versus VHS.
The Ultimate DVD edition (not blu-ray) has the following 'Bonus features' on Disc 1: Production Notes -- which is merely one screen -- Cast and Filmmakers, DVD Newsletter, Recommendations, DVD-ROM Features. These are extensive, designed to explain the backdrop of the movie. The 'Cast and Filmmakers' section is not live, but rather little screen explanations about the cast, stuff you can learn better in imdb. ... full review(1,642) -
"Still a Raw Nerve, an Unhealed Wound" - By David S. Jenkins (On the Road)
I avoided this film for two years not just because I assumed it would fail to live up to the importance of it's topic, but because that topic is still difficult for me to deal with. The story takes place just a week past my 16th birthday, but for me (and almost everyone of my age that I know,) it's as though Bobby was shot last night. When I see footage from the Ambassador ballroom, or when I see film of the funeral train... the tears quickly well up. Four decades later, I choke up.
In reading the many Amazon pages of reviews for this film, you can get a feel for the age of the author. I wouldn't expect anyone under the age of perhaps 12 at the time (or not yet born) to react the same way to this film as those of us who remember the ... full review(207) -
"Fun movie about the making of Psycho" - By Marion Stein (NYC)
Fun movie about the making of Psycho. Helen Mirren, Anthony Hopkins -- How can you go wrong? The surprise for me was Scarlett Johanson, who really did manage not only to look like Janet Leigh, but to sound like her. In fact, having read about Hitch's issues with some of his leading ladies, I thought Johanson's performance was especially good at giving a sense of how Hitch could be handled by someone who knew what she was doing.(641) -
"A near perfect small movie targeted to a small audience" - By Phred (Texas)
A few fast points needed to help you in your decision to buy this movie.
It is a true story.
It is about a deep relationship that is based entirely on a common love of books and not anything sexual.
The entire movie revolves around the interplay of two real people, who only know each other via the trans-Atlantic exchange of letters.
It is the movie version of an equally charming book. (I heartily recommend getting both - book and movie)[[ASIN:0140143505 84, Charing Cross Road]]
This is a slowly paced character driven movie.
Nothing happens.
Conclusion: It is slow paced, has no action, no belly laughs - it is only about two decent people, with a common love of books.
By now readers, you should have enough information to know if this movie will be for you. For me it is one of a few near perfect, small scale, ... full review(407)
