"Amazing book, one of the best I have read." - By Bfunk
I cannot stress this enough: everyone needs to read this book. It gives a detailed account of everything we need to know about economics. I wanted to take notes on this book as I read it. This was a mistake because I ended up copying the entire book. It does not matter if you are a high school/college student, someone who is looking to understand economics for the first time, or an "expert", this book is for you. Dr. Sowell takes problems in the economy and looks how we got there. In "stage one" politicians create some idealistic policy which sounds good to the American people but end up destroying sectors of our economy. Please America, read this book. If we did, we would catch these politicians making policies that will only help their chances of reelection by destroying our cities, states, and this country. Do the USA a favor ... full review

"The law of unintended consequences" - By Dave Tulka
Dr. Sowell does a superb job of explaining the unintended consequences of well-intentioned, but incompletely thought-out public policy. as a highlight, Dr. Sowell details the downstream, negative impact of rent control laws on the very people the laws are intended to protect. Rent control laws mean less income for the owner, more people in line to rent, and less income for the owner to use in the maintainance of his property. As a result the very properties protected by rent control fall into disrepair and are then abandoned.

As a non-economist, I found the concepts and illustrations very accessible.

Great resource when learning the statistical side of business with lots of pertinent information necessary to learn. This should be a book required for anyone learning the ropes of business.

"A great overview of economics" - By Abdelhamid S. Abdou (Santa Clara, CA)
This is a very good introduction to economics. The book covers a lot of topics such as the role of price and the difference between it and cost, the role of government, markets, risks, national output and international trade. The book also provides a good history of economics as a field and the progress of theories that emerged over the different phases.
I really liked that the book covered a lot of bad policies that usually suggested by politicians to address issues and end up making the original problems more severe such as rent control.

"Excellent for economists and financial analysts" - By Patrick L. Anderson (Michigan USA)
This is one of the few books that covers the topics of numerical methods to solve finance and economics problems. It provides a large number of generic applications.
Readers that can use Matlab will especially benefit. If so, be sure to get the author's toolbox and see the errata on the author's page.
There are two other books that might be useful to those interested in this text: Dixit and Pindyck's Investment Under Uncertainty (1994), and Patrick Anderson's Business Economics and Finance (2004) [my book], which cites the Dixit and Miranda texts.
Readers should be prepared for some math, although it is much more accessible here than in most graduate texts in financial mathematics.

"One of the smartest books I've read..." - By Joel Nelson
An excellent alternative explanation for market mechanics. Should be required reading for all investors, and especially economists. Explains how markets work in the 'real world' and not just in academia. Highly recommended. 100%

"Exactly what it says." - By GreyFox (Dallas,TX)
I am studying why governments cannot manage their finances.

I believe that it is not possible for any government to effectively manage its finances.

This gives a good understanding of what they do wrong.

I must confess, though that I can't understand why they continue to ignore the lessons of history and continue to do it.

"you'll like this text book" - By one voice
An excellent text book introducing the basic principles of applied economic analysis. The author uses many everyday practical examples to help illustrate Time Value Money (TVM) calculations. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding on how to use TVM calculations or help justify projects, expenditures, etc. either at work or at home.

"Great Resource" - By Stephen Mann (NY, USA)
A truly neat reference for anyone needing to figure stuff like the flip-over point of a cornering car or remember how to do standard deviations for fun and profit (no not really).

Clear and concise explanations, but you'll probably need a more complete work if you need to learn the derivation of whatever you're reading about or have 30-mumble years of rust on some area of your math schooling.

"Good book, very little difference between seventh edition" - By reggie little
I found the book to be o.k. I had the 7th edition but bought this one because the course changed text. I could have used the 7th edition as there is very little change to the 8th. Probably only 20 pages out of 400 are different.

"If you're interested in understanding the exchanges around you (priced or not), then read this excellent book." - By David Zetland (Amsterdam)
Al Roth, economics nobelist, wrote this interesting and very readable book about the economics of markets (subtitle: "The New Economics of Matchmaking and Market Design").

The book isn't about the perfectly competitative or monopolistic markets taught in economics textbooks, but markets for (work)mates, body parts, seats in schools and so on.

The book's structure (markets everywhere, how markets fail, how to improve them, and the ethics of allowing them) takes the reader from zero beginnings to some serious insight. You will find yourself seeing markets everywhere once you get into this book. I won't go into details on the book's content, which was fascinating.

Consider the market for clothes. It's not exactly a commodity market, even if you ignore fashion. Think about the need to match people for height, weight or shoe size. Those mere facts can explain why its hard to find large shoes in South ... full review
