My 8 year old was assigned to do her monthly book report on a biography. She wanted to read about Abraham Lincoln... until she found out she had to dress up as the book's subject! Regrouping with a week to go and a driving vacation looming, I rushed to find a children's biography available in audio download... and stumbled upon this gem. We all listened to the (abridged) audio version on the trip, and I do think that hearing it read by the author added a great deal. My daughter read the unabridged book with fascination when we got home, though I suspect she might have had more difficulty relating to the book had she not heard Jane Goodall speak her own words first. At any rate, the report (outfitted with khakis, a notebook, and a velcro-handed stuffed chimp) was a great success, and my daughter has met a role ... full review(94) -

it was a very interesting book. I don't normally like non-fiction books and when I heard all the books for my summer reading were non-fiction I was just about to pull all my hair out but I this book kept me wanting to read it and I finished it in 30 minutes so... yeah.(328) -

These are the best nonfiction books for 3rd through 6th graders for AR. As a teacher and a parent, these are always my first recommendation to meet their AR goal. We require 3 nonfiction books per 9 weeks and these can be read in just a few days. They are informative and the kids overwhelmingly enjoy them.(215) -

I downloaded this book minutes after midnight on its first day, and 14 hrs later I have finished it cover to cover. I have been married to a Pakistani for 14 yrs, and have repeatedly asked my husband, "Why do the Pakistanis put up with this"...or that as situations have arisen over the yrs. The best answers I have gotten are the same mentioned in this book. Corruption & fear. It is so wonderful to see a father & his daughter take a stand for their right for something as simple as going to school that so many of us take for granted every day.
Although I have never been to any of the 'villages' I have visited Pakistan once & was a bit surprised by the conditions in one of the larger cities. The Swat valley does sound beautiful thanks to the wonderful mental pictures I got from the ... full review(3,640) -

I loved this autobiographical narrative when I was 9 and was a little apprehensive about purchasing it for my girls who are less seeped in British culture and for whom many of the cultural references would be lost, but I was wrong, they loved it, were not put off by any of it and it is the first book in this genre they have tackled so I am happy it was a good experience. This is not just a good read, when I was at school it was used to teach us life narratives so I recommend it for classroom use as well (3rd grade and upwards).(294) -

I bought this to use in my 6th grade reading classroom. It is excellent to use to teach reading skills such as main idea, author's purpose, or summarizing. I put it in a center and students have 10 minutes to use the book for an assignment. Since it is at a lower reading level, students have success in building skills to use in higher level texts.
This book is a good addition to the grade 1-6 classroom library.(5) -

All of the books in this series are wonderful children's biographies. I have found that these books contain enough information and details for the children to learn of these individuals and their works without being boring. The photos are excellent and help to keep the kids attention while giving them excellent visuals of the person and time era they lived in. My daughter, age 9, will sit and read one of these in about 30 minutes. She is able to then write an adequate book report from the information. I have also noticed more and more that she will mention tidbits about these individuals in everyday conversation. They are written in a way that the kids understand and retain the information. Highly recommended.(7) -

This is a cute book for children but also informative for adults you may not have this in their history classes or maybe they don't remember it. The short autobiographies highlight important points of the famous peoples lives .(5) -
