A well-made and touching film about a Christian Catholic priest, Fr. Damien, who sailed from his native Belgium in the late 1800s to work with lepers on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. The film tells the story of Fr. Damien, who devoted his life to improving the lives of lepers on Molokai, even at the expense of his own health. Lepers in Hawaii at that time were exiled to the island of Molokai to isolate them from healthy people. Their living conditions were primitive and they received little medical care until Fr. Damien arrived. No wonder the state of Hawaii placed a statue of Fr. Damien in statuary hall in the U.S. Capitol. He was an amazing human being and it is no surprise that recently the Catholic Church declared him to be a saint.(482) -

Nash's documentary is a touching look at a grandson's search for understanding of his grandfather's experience at the end of WWII. The film doesn't uncover any new information, or probe any psychological depths that haven't been probed before, but provides a glimpse of the impact of the trauma of war and genocide on families back in the States. The interviews with soldiers of the 65th and with one camp survivor are particularly engaging--their faces reveal what no words can say.(171) -

"Sully", the movie produced and directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks, is the story of 208 seconds of a man's life. It's also the story of 208 seconds of 154 other souls' lives. The movie is not a long one - 97 minutes - but Eastwood has put together a masterful show of how one man's instincts and judgement can come together at one crucial moment to perform what amounted to a "miracle". Of course, Captain Chesley Sullenberger was helped by his co-pilot and crew, and the rescue operations of the NYPD and maritime units.
Tom Hanks is an actor who seems able to possess another man's body and personality. Other reviewers point out his roles in "Forrest Gump" and "Philadelphia" - among others - but I think his acting of Congressman Charlie Wilson - in "Charlie Wilson's War" - was his best "capture" of another man's ... full review(6,790) -

"I just love my wife"....At a time when a mixed race marriage in the South was not to be, a couple fell in love, had a baby, and wanted to simply live their lives. How simple that should be still....I loved the quiet determination this couple showed as they walked through the challenges put upon them by those around them, by the laws at that time in our America. "I just love my wife" it should be that simple. The prejudices, discrimination, cruelty is hard to watch, but the love and strength of the man, the wife, makes this a most powerful and good film! I loved it!! And based on a couple that in real life experienced these tests makes it even more powerful!! We love who we love....and it is our right to do so...(502)
