"Excellent and Easily Readable Book - Highly Recommended!" - By J. Groen (GURNEE, ILLINOIS USA)
Fascinating look at the history of the theoretical understanding and astronomical identification of "black holes". For readers who don't know what a black hole is, the book defines this without the mathematical theory that may make it difficult to understand for some readers. In fact, there is NO mathematical requirements to understand this book.

The book does an excellent of describing Newton's laws, special relativity and general relativity (Einstein), and some of the follow up concepts, e.g. Schwarzschild singularity (won't get into defining this and other concepts in this book - read the book!), and Oppenheimer's unusual finding. And, the description is very readable and understandable.

This is an excellent book for anyone with just a casual interest in the concept of a black hole and the theories and discoveries clearly identifying that these exist.

"Levin's book offered a unique and very personal window into ..." - By Chiara Mingarelli (Bologna, Italy)
Levin's book offered a unique and very personal window into the LIGO's history, which mainly focussed on the relationships between Ron Drever, Kip Thorne, and Rai Weiss. Their stories, triumphs, conflicts, together with the way in which LIGO grew to a 1,000-member collaboration, makes for a truly compelling read.

"Great book!" - By hayley tuson
I bought this book for my 11 year old nephew who loves anything about space and black holes. It had wonderful information and great pictures.

"book: Black Holes and Time Warps" - By Amazon Customer
A mostly-successful attempt to portray the physics associated with General Relativity near the event horizon of any black hole - without equations, and in language for the non-physics person. By an acknowledged master of said physics (Kip has been a professor at Cal Tech for decades, in General Relativity, and was technical consultant for the recent movie "Interstellar"). This book, written 30+ years before the recent detection of gravitational waves, gives a prescient description of the cataclysmic event that could produce the kinds of waves that were actually detected.

"Accessible to kids but not dumbed down" - By Jean Charles Mourey (Côte d'Azur, France)
An excellent science book that is accessible to children, but does not dumb down the science. Several sophisticated concepts are presented. The content is current on some of the latest research on black holes and astrophysics.

Relatively thin book, large format with lots of pictures including many with real scientific value, not just pretty pictures.

"Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays" - By squall-leonhart-8 (The Milky Way Galaxy)
Stephen Hawking is my favorite science author, and I have learned almost everything I know about physics from this man's books.
This book gives some very interesting facts about his life in the beginning. It includes much biographical info not included in his other books, as well as the usual physics he includes in his other books.
Highly recommended book. And cheap (only a few dollars if bought from an Amazon merchant).

"Straight-up the best book I have ever read." - By cassiejsneider
The last time I could not stop reading a book, it was The Baby-Sitter's Club #8 Boy-Crazy Stacey and I read it for five straight hours until it was done, not stopping to eat or drink, like I was doing some kind of ancient tribal rite of passage to prove I was a true Reader. I read Bucky Sinister's Black Hole last night in much the same way, and I never wanted it to end because it was that good.

"Ambitious and Accurate -- Astronomical Abstraction for Kids" - By raisa
Okay, a black hole is not a hole (but it's NOT exactly NOT a hole, either!) This book tackles the big questions of gravitational pull, properties of light and radio waves -- all necessary to understanding what a black hole is. It also touches on more sophisticated aspects of "gravitational lensing" and relativity. It is written at a sixth-grade level with concepts I'd say are appropriate for middle schoolers or gifted elementary students. The illustrations are friendly but not overly cute, with very useful captions. It includes imaginative aspects of "travelling to" a black hole, which helps connect relativity to everyday life (what does it mean to "see a red apple?")

Importantly, for kids' science literature: This book does not present information in an absolute sense but includes how we know what we know. There are useful sections on the history of discovering black holes, the ... full review

"String Theory Describes Black Holes" - By TS
This is a real path-breaking study by one of the founders of String Theory and author of "Black Hole Wars," a more historical narrative detailing the debate with Stephen Hawkings about whether information is lost in black holes. This book, in contrast, is less conversational and more like a thin text packed with intellectual diamnods. It is brief and action packed with formulas and simple explanations, a great balance of theory and narrative which very succinctly covers the topics of black holes and how they are described by string theory.

Not like the usual book which is fluffy with no mathematical details, or a heavy textbook that is impossible to follow. The math is light but challenging for a non-physicist. Cool book and very informative. Cutting edge.

"Isaiah says it like it is" - By linda grimm
I really am enjoying this book. Isaiah says it like it is! I must admit, at first, the book made me feel bad because I am 50 years old and thought I had no time left to accomplish anything. But I just kept reading.. And hoping… It is definitely a get-off-your-butt revolution. I really love his story and the way this book makes me feel. I certainly don't want to be a sheep! This is a step-by-step guide for a successful future. A must read!

"A new rewiring of the brain of physicsts" - By Jaume Puigbo Vila (Barcelona, Spain)
This book tells the story of the "battle" between the author and Stephen Hawking regarding the latter claim that information is irretrievably lost in black holes.
This story is the extraordinary account of the paradigm shift that has occurred in physics in the last 25 years. Moreover, the book reads like a novel thanks to the various analogies and the anecdotes concerning the lives and personalities of the physicists involved. In summary, a very recommendable book for someone who wants to keep abreast of the advances in quantum gravity and cosmology, although the author discusses also the basic concepts of quantum mechanics and relativity.
Very strange things seem to happen in the vicinity of black holes and, as Susskind says, this needs rewiring of our brains, as we had to do before for relativity and quantum mechanics. When someone approaches and finally crosses a black hole horizon we ... full review
