"A few years ago I took David’s Client Acquisition Formula course and found it to be excellent. This book is a distillation of mo" - by C.D. (Escondido, CA United States)
This book should be required reading for anybody who is a practicing consultant in any field. A few years ago I took David’s Client Acquisition Formula course and found it to be excellent. This book is a distillation of most of the course, and is a very powerful summary of what David teaches. It was a welcome refresher and helped fill in the gaps I had forgotten.

David’s writing style is an easy read that is packed full of dry humor. And he has elevated stick figure drawing to a new art form. But that aside, each of the 6 sections walk a consultant through the process of getting known, getting trusted and getting business. Any consultant who does not follow this process is leaving money on the table.

"For experienced Consultants, too" - by Rick Sline (Houston, TX USA)
If you've already read Getting Started in Consulting, chances are you've re-read it several times and checked out some of Alan Weiss' other books. If you haven't read any of Weiss' books - and are a Consultant or are thinking about becoming a Consultant - this is a good place to start. Although this book covers some common ground with Weiss' popular "Million Dollar Consulting", there's enough unique information in each to warrant reading both.
The book starts out auspiciously in "Chapter 1 Establishing Goals and Expectations: You Will Be What You Decide to Be, Nothing Less, Nothing More". To support this thesis, Weiss points out that despite experts' warnings about much hard work and travel a consultant must endure for a maximum of a $300K income, he runs a 7-figure practice from his house with no staff or office. "The problem is that if you educate ... full review

"I like practical, meaty books" - by Paula Usrey
I like practical, meaty books. This book had lots of useful information and "how to" sections. Too many of these books rely just on personal experience and include a lot of fluff. I didn't find this to be the case with Katcher's book.

"Life Changing book with timeless advice for getting what you want in business and life" - by Sean Bauer (Columbus, Oh)
What an amazing book! I have read literally thousands of books and if I had one book to recommend to someone for living a better life and achieving success it would be this one!

The book starts with a seemingly simple question, What do you want? and proceeds to provide a global framework for getting what you want and then working with others to achieve greater objectives as well.

My takeaway is that finding the truth, being open, and persistence are the qualities needed to achieve any goal or solve any problem. Many people 'think' they are finding the truth and being open but they are not, and companies are rampant with self-delusion in these areas. If all companies would adopt these Principles, the world would be a better place.

Principles describes in great detail how you achieve any objective from the individual small goal to the organization huge goal with a clear ... full review

"Wish I'd Had This Book 13 Years Ago!" - by Deb Calvert, co-author of Stop Selling & Start Leading; author of DISCOVER Questions Get You Connect
This book is a must-read for anyone planning to go into business as a consultant or solopreneur providing business services like coaching and training. The author does a great job of answering all the questions you won't think of asking (until it's too late!). He also flags the common traps that first-timers fall into.

I think this book would have saved me a lot of time and money if it had been available when I opened my business. It specifies which resources to enlist (and which to skip), provides the basics on how to set your fees and how to make your first sales, and how to grow at a sustainable rate. Best of all, every chapter has a simple checklist so you won't miss any of the truly important steps in getting started.

"Good Buy if You are Serious of Consulting as a Business" - by JEMA (Trinidad & Tobago)
I recently acquired this book among other similar titles. Ms. Biech is obviously a very competent and experienced author. The book was well written and seem like a Step-by-Step guide in its simplicity of content and presentation. However, because I am an experienced business person, at times I had no alternative but to eliminate the reading of certain pages that explained the day to day running of a business. Nevertheless, this does not detract from the very objective of the text which is to explain the Consulting Career and running it like a business.

It is a good book for anyone thinking to get into the field from a business and career perspective.

"Very Helpful Reference Book for New and Veteran Consultants" - by Michelle W.
I recently read and now going back through this great book to develop my action plans as a consultant. While this book provides a very good road map for new consultants there are a good amount of gems for use by veteran consultants as myself. It's a relative quick first pass read, however it is packed full of concise guidance,.examples/templates, and references. Includes guidance in marketing yourself, setting and increasing your bill rates, proposals, getting through the first year, etc. From a veteran's perspective areas, such as using "mind mapping", skill assessment, continuous improvement, focus on adding to your "tool bag" are very helpful.

So, I highly recommend this book. It is marked up and like a used textbook now. Thanks, Marc Williams, CPA

"Not just for those in, or looking to join, the consulting field" - by Keith
Whether working with your company’s customers, internal stakeholders, or management chain, this book lays out the fundamentals necessary for success. Finding the relevant data, analyzing it with a critical eye, and effectively communicating your findings and recommendations; this book covers it all while providing useful insights and anecdotes that help bring the concepts and lessons to life. It’s also an easy read and doesn’t come across a like a text book.
Even with almost 30 years of business experience, I found this book offers plenty of lessons. It used to be I’d put my most significant reference books on the shelf in my study; this one’s staying on my tablet and traveling with me.

"The Business of Biech" - by Marguerite Tompkins
The Business of Consulting: The Basics and Beyond, by Elaine Biech truly deals with what the title suggests, the business end of consulting. Throughout her book, Ms. Biech reiterates that "Staying in business is less dependent on how good a consultant you are than on how well you run your business" (p. 201). Biech backs up her emphasis on running a business successfully by offering a number of exhibits in the form of worksheets, questionnaires, self-evaluations and developing a business plan. Her exhibits contain information from tracking expenses, to tracking time. In every topic covering the business end of consulting Biech is very thorough. For example, in the marketing section of her book, she tells readers what to put in mailings in order to get attention. Her idea is to make all mailings aimed at getting ... full review

"Excellent Workbook - highly recommend" - by Pepper Hudson (Littlehampton, Australia)
Brilliant workbook - this has really clarified a bunch of things for me, and having thought them all through I feel more secure in my decisions (especially regarding price setting and cash flow). The advice about networking has really helped too; why it is so important and how to manage your database of contacts. I don't usually feel compelled to complete the exercises in this style of book, but in this case I have written on most pages - and neatly for future reference!
