i don't normally write reviews but i have to say this is the best financial book i've ever read...i have spent the past 15 or so years at the coo level with finance reporting to me...and while i'm financially savvy, i have no formal financial education...i'm a believer that finance, like any profession or industry, gets bogged down in its own set of acronyms and language...that in and of itself creates the silos too often found in organizations...sales has it, marketing has it, hr has it, etc...etc...
i always try to break down barriers and most of my time is spent as a translator...truth be told, i've always struggled with translating the financial lingo...this book did it for me and has helped me paint a picture and tell the story behind it so everyone understands...
kudos to the authors!!!(144) -

"You dropped 150 grand on an education you could have gotten for $1.50 in late charges at the public library." Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting
In The Personal MBA Josh Kaufman makes a very compelling case (as does Will Hunting) that for people considering an MBA, the economics aren't that great. For many graduate students (not just Business majors), it feels like a Casino: everyone takes the tests, and gets primed, then takes out a huge loan from the bank (often a six-figure amount) hoping that when they come out the other side, there will be an awesome, high-paying job waiting for them. It's a financial transaction, not really an educational one. In fact, much of the education gleaned from an Master in Business Administration is theoretical and marginally updated from the projects and Case Studies done in Bachelor of Business and Economics programs; after all, how can ... full review(544) -

I am a huge fan of the HBR series and this book doesn't let you down. It isn't a definitive work of genius but it is useful and a great refresher for anyone out of school for a while. It also reads easy and does a good job summarizing. Well done(29) -

I started with the second edition of the Ten Day MBA around the year 2000. I used both the second and third editions as a primer for business and MBA concepts over the last decade. At the time, I did not know if I would go back to get an MBA. Several years ago, I enrolled in an evening Professional MBA program at Radford University. I am about 80% complete with the PMBA; and I used the fourth edition to help consolidate my knowledge before moving on to the last few classes. Reading the fourth edition was a much richer experience, now that I had classroom experience to relate the material. It is true that you can use this book as a primer if you aren't going to get the MBA in the near term; and as a review if you are about to ... full review(165) -

The three financial statements that are fundamental to any understanding of business and investing--the Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flow Statement--are thoroughly explained and explored in clear and simple terms with a deft touch of whimsy in this book. Financial terms many take for granted are effectively defined. (Difference between revenue and income, anyone?) This is NOT advanced economics but rather Accounting 101 for those investors, business people and others who need to understand the nuts and bolts of financial statements. For that purpose, I cannot imagine how a book could be better than this one.
Also, I heartily agree with reviews that said buy the actual book, not the Kindle version. Financial statements and written explanations are on opposing pages making it easy to glance back and forth. (And you will definitely be glancing back and forth between the two.) ... full review(326) -

As an entrepreneur, this book summarized for me the important concepts of finance and financial strategy in a way that is easily digestible. This is no easy task because I've read a few finance books over the years and honestly, this has been the most useful and practical one I've read thus far. So whether you're looking for a refresher on financial concepts you've already learned or for book that will teach you about new ones, this is definitely a great read.(10) -

Definitely made simple! Gives a very basic grounding in the concepts and gives meaning to the common buzzwords used. I purchased the Kindle version which has some weird page breaks and makes it harder to follow. I would get this in paper format if I were purchasing again.(375) -

Starting your own small business is an incredibly stressful process. Forget writing a business plan and creating customers and deciding on a physical location -- the question of money looms largest. You have no idea how long it will take for your business to turn a profit, or if it will even succeed at all. To answer these questions about financing, “Finance Your Own Business” is a smart place to start.
One of the great advantages of this book is that it is written as if by a close friend. There’s no high-handed language or dry, textbook explanations. You can almost imagine the authors Garrett Sutton and Gerri Detweiler sitting across from you at the kitchen table, sipping coffee from chipped mugs, explaining the advantages and disadvantages of small business credit cards.
The personal accounts at the start of each chapter peaked my interest and gave the information ... full review(33)
