This collection of HBR's finest articles is second to none. A great investment for any student or professional who has a life long desire to learn from the best. I've been a reader of HBR since I started my MBA and I feel this collection will be referenced throughout my career. In summary, only HBRs best work makes the pages and this reference set will help you immensely throughout your life.(174) -

List Price: $18.95 Price: $12.25 You Save: $6.70 (35%) "A bright introduction to game theory" - By Amazon Customer
Game theory thoroughly and (almost always) plainly exposed. I read it combined with the previous edition "Think strategically" which is in a way more effective, though not covering a couple of subjects, in particular VIckrey's auctions, that the new version brilliantly clarifies. A must-read for non experts provided that you don't pay too much attention to the deceptive subtitle: this book won't give you insights on how to solve real life issues, rather some general reasoning patterns that will come in handy in your everyday activity.(73) -

List Price: $29.95 Price: $16.91 You Save: $13.04 (44%) "This is a useful book, but be forewarned" - By Rick (Nutley, NJ United States)
This is a useful book, but be forewarned, it's more of a training manual than traditional business book (thus the 4 stars). The book is true to its title, and offers a rich source of well-referenced, practical tools and worksheets for scaling various parts of your business. Another useful contribution are the detailed examples and cases used throughout the book.
Having said that, reading the book is a bit of slog, as it is intended more as a reference manual.(393) -

I don't rate many of my purchases on here, but this book has become such a mainstay in my marketing consultancy references, that I had to review it. I've read it twice from cover to cover, and a dozen other times I've skimmed, jumped and searched the appendix. I have highlights, notes, pictures, dog ears and bookmarks on virtually every paragraph, and it's actually the only book I keep in my bag -- right next to my laptop.
Three ways it helped me:
IT DEFINED STRATEGY
If you were to ask 20 people in business, "How do you define strategy?", you would get 20 different answers. This book resulted in me being able to define it for my clients, but also acknowledge how it's

I enjoyed reading this expanded edition of Blue Ocean Strategy. This book is about alternative perspective using business case studies and theories that can equally apply to everyday learning, working and even playing. I like the overall concept of non-zero-sum game, and I particularly like Chapter 3: Reconstruct Market Boundaries; which changes how I view life now and frees me from conventional mental fixation on everything. I sincerely hope you too will be enlightened by the concept of blue ocean strategy.(175) -

I agree with most all of the other reviewers. If you really want to understand Porter's timeless concepts of Strategy this is the book to read. I have four Michael Porter books on my shelf including Competitive Strategy, Competitive Advantage, The Competitive Advantage of Nation and finally On Competition. I've read all of these over the years and refer back to them periodically. This book provides a very easy to read pointed overview of the important concepts in Porter's first two books. I think I may find myself now referring back to this one.
For anyone that is either an MBA student or thinking about going down the MBA path this book would be an excellent supplemental read.
This one, in my opinion, is a definite 5 star must have.(109) -

Price: $41.95 "One of our best business books for 2014" - By strategy+business
In Business Strategy: Managing Uncertainty, Opportunity, and Enterprise, J.-C. Spender takes what he calls the "entrepreneurial" path to corporate growth and market response. To the peripatetic business professor and retired dean of the School of Business & Technology at SUNY/Fashion Institute of Technology, strategy is the product of executive imagination and judgment, not just logic; the strategy process involves balancing the known, the unknown, and the unknowable. The purpose of strategic analyses, frameworks, and methods is to inspire inventiveness and inform judgment.
Spender arrives at this position by comparing the quantitative planning techniques popular in organizations after World War II--which were mostly developed by the military during the war--with the more subjective, less rigid strategic methodologies that appeared in the 1980s and that are now widespread in the business world. In the earlier era, the dominant idea was to match a firm's resources to the market's demands. The company's ... full review(11) -

List Price: $34.95 Price: $20.19 You Save: $14.76 (42%) "Best model for entrepreneurship / intrapreneurship, but not a stand-alone volume" - By Scott Palumbo (Boston, MA United States)
I purchased this book after seeing its Business Model Canvas (BMC) used very effectively in team entrepreneurship competition. I read it and used the BMC very effectively when restructuring a national business development division, but I felt that I was using my own knowledge and knowledge from other sources to complete the canvases more than the information in this book. While this is a lovely book and is beautifully designed, it simply seemed to lack the no-nonsense information to maximize its potential.
Recently, while completing my MBA, I took an entrepreneurship class in which the professor used this book and the BMC but paired it with _The Startup Owner's Manual_ (Blank & Dorf). Having another volume to fill in the blanks completely changed my view on this book and allowed me to dramatically improve my BMC's. I am currently using this book's canvasses as the ... full review(583) -

List Price: $32.00 Price: $14.28 You Save: $17.72 (55%) "How and why getting strategy and execution in cohesive alignment is a worthwhile legacy for any leader in any enterprise" - By Robert Morris (Dallas, Texas)
Those who have read Cut Costs + Grow Stronger (2009) and/or The Essential Advantage (2011) already know that Paul Leinwand and Cesare Mainardi are among the most insightful business thinkers now publishing books and articles that provide information, insights, and counsel of incalculable value to senior-level executives as well as to those who aspire to reach that level. That said, I think Strategy That Works (written with Art Kleiner) is their most important work thus far. Why? Because I think it will have a wider and deeper impact on any organization, whatever its size and nature may be.
Just as Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton focus on the “knowing-doing gap,” Leinwand and Mainardi focus on another, equally important gap. As they explain, “There is a significant and unnecessary gap between strategy and execution: a lack of connection between where the enterprise aims to go and what it can accomplish. ... full review(23) -

Price: $26.95 "Practical Applications of Intellectual Insight" - By Robert A. Glenn (Portland, Maine)
What a delightful change from the other thousands of business books claiming to have all the answers. Messieurs Litman and Frigo don't have to claim anything; they just lay out reams of practical knowledge. A business man for 25 years, I still took 2 pages of notes before I finished reading the introduction and got to chapter 1. Understanding the psychological reasons behind client satisfaction, treating your employees as customers, differentiating between great companies and great company stocks, realizing great products to not necessarily result in great profits, this book is so full of uncommon sense it is incredible. I not only truly enjoyed reading this book, but it's the type of book where you can go to work the next day with your head full of ideas to make your business better whether you are a business owner, and middle manager, or a stock investor. List Price: $30.00 Price: $19.05 You Save: $10.95 (37%) "A practical approach to build a winning strategy" - By Chema Ballarin (Dublin, Ireland)
A very good book on strategy for two reasons:
- it explains what strategy is, why is needed and how to build one for your company, with frameworks and models to help you throughout the process
- it does the above in a concise and simple manner, using plain vocabulary and language everyone can understand, even if you're not into management.
I'm a pragmatic person. While I value the theoretical explanations on such topics like this one, I need to see how to put those into action so results can appear. This book contains advice that can be implemented as you go through the process of creating your strategy. It can really help you taking decisions, which is the core of making a strategy and put it in place.
Reason for four stars and not five is that all examples taken are from a single company (P&G). While I ... full review(234) -
