"The C programming language is such a clean, condense ..." - By Aaron Batilo
The C programming language is such a clean, condense, and focused book on exactly what you want to learn: the C programming language. In the beginning of the book they even explicitly tell you how they aren't there to try and teach you the fluff, or writing clean code. The book is there to teach you about one of the most important languages of our modern world. This book is a must have for any developer who wants to take their personal advancement seriously. Even if you don't use C in your daily job or life, I personally believe you should still learn it and use this exact book because nobody can explain it more clearly than the creators of the language.

"I would highly recommended to read this book everyone then You will learn ..." - By ABS
Amazon needs some sort of accountability for this kind of thing. I would highly recommended to read this book everyone then You will learn too how to organize relevant expressions so that after compilation and execution, the computer returns useful results and not error messages. Additionally, this book details the data types that you need for the C language and how to present it as well. I really liked that book. The author did a great job.

"Very solid book on the Objective C language" - By Nikolas Terani (So Cal)
I really like this book as an introduction into the Objective C language and quite frankly into the world of programming in general. The examples in the book are lucid which to me is the most critical part of any computer science book. The examples are also extended throughout the book which is nice because you have the ability to reuse the programs you create to further expand your understanding of the concepts. The book also does a good job explaining general object-oriented principles such as information hiding, polymorphism, dynamic binding, inheritance, dynamic typing etc. I would definitely recommend this book to either anyone interested in learning Objective-C from the ground floor or anyone looking to get a ground floor look at Object Oriented programming through a specific language. The book is more catered to the former than the later but if you are looking ... full review

"C Programming Absolute Beginner's Guide - and it is..." - By C. Trusty
This book really does start with the basics, but then quickly moves on to more advanced subjects - just as it should. The difference between this book & others, is the number and type of examples it uses. I've gone through many different 'Beginner's Guides' over the years and this of one of the very few that does it right!
I would definitely suggest this ebook to anyone that's just starting out - AS WELL AS THOSE WHO NEED A QUICK REFRESH of their brain...

"Recommended for the self-taught programmer or intermediate programmer looking to fill gaps" - By Alan Olsen (Portland, OR USA)
[This review was written for the 2014 Second edition.]

I have been programming for about 40+ years now. I learned C from a K&R first edition. Much of the bits of C I learned early on no longer work or are recommended these days. The language has changed, the tools have changed, and my watch has more than 1,000 times the memory of my first computer.

This is a book that gives a good refresher course in C. The author has a good knowledge of the history and structure of the language. He warns of the pitfalls and advantages throughout the book.

The book is not the average dry textbook. The style is light and readable, without being "jokey". I did not get bored with it, as I have with some other books.

The book not only covers C, but the tools needed to write good ... full review

"... 22 and I have to say this book is amazing. I probably won't finish the rest of the ..." - By Johnathan Petricini
Just finished chapter 22 and I have to say this book is amazing. I probably won't finish the rest of the book but will keep it close as a reference. I used C to write small programs many years ago and wanted to start learning C again for certain reasons and decided to go with this book after reading the reviews. I certainly learned some new things about the language and while I did not test all the code examples in the book however out of the ones I did they worked and the others looked like they would (no typos).

    Good book to learn C.

"Exactly What is Needed to Become Fluent in C++" - By ThatsWhatJenniSaid (Alexandria, VA 22312)
So here I am, newly enrolled in graduate school (MS in Computer Science) after a long long gap in my education (BA in psychology 1995!). And here I am taking a class on C++ focusing on using the language for solving problems and analyzing data. And I don't even know the basics yet. What's a girl to do? PICK UP THIS BOOK. Every chapter is packed with easy-to-understand, in depth explanations of essential as well as advanced concepts. I've also another C++ book (required by the professor) that just pales in comparison and so I've taken to reading the applicable chapter from THIS book before reading the assigned chapter in our assigned textbook. I find that lets me go into the classroom assigned reading with a clear understanding of the material and lets me view the assigned textbook as an "extra" information source. Without this book though I'd be totally ... full review

"Well written, but just skims the surface." - By Robert Wright
This is a well written book about basic C programming. I didn't give it 5 stars, because it didn't take me very far into the language. What it did cover was excellent. I finally purchased "Programming in C" by Kochan for a deeper look into C programming.

"Must read for all self respecting mature C++ programmers but not for beginners that jus want to get started" - By h
The only C++ reference that is worth considering.
If you are a C++ programmer, you need this book as a reference in order to understand the language and the intent behind some of the features (especially the new C++11).

I don't think this book is a starting point for beginners that want to learn the language. Who want to read 1000+ book when they just want to get started. I got put off by the 3rd edition when I started programming C++ and came back to it later. Use "A Tour of C++" from the same author to get the gist of the language and come back to this book once you are more experienced with the language. I also found the 4th edition to be clearer and better presented than the previous edition.

Finally, I will restate an advice I found useful from the C++ isofaq, ... full review

"Nice Book" - By Robin Levin (Fremont, CA)
This is a nice companion to the K&R book. Note that you can find online web sites that give solutions too, but sometimes they use libraries or concepts not yet covered by the K&R, whereas the answer book, for the most part stays at about the same gradient as the corresponding K&R page number. It also uses a fairly similar approach as the examples in K&R. Explanations are fairly short, but helpful. One thing it doesn't have (though the questions it answers don't really ask for it), is a working main function to test drive the solutions. In a way, this is a nice study to learn more about the topics but can be frustrating in the pointers section (see 'An aside' below).

I purchased this book used for around $7. I don't think I would purchase a new copy for a solutions book -- the condition was quite ... full review

"hmm Where to start." - By Marc (Sonora, CA USA)
Ok, this is in answer to another review. First, I don't think this book was meant for the 20 yr pro. I know the title implies that but honestly I think it was meant for the beginner/slightly experienced programer. Anybody who has read K&R thru and thru should probably skip this book if your looking for more ways to improve your coding practices. Honestly I don't think you would gain that much from it. I would though suggest reading it for the humor.
    =)
And here is where I part with that reviewer. I find most of the humor to be both comprehensible and more to the point, funny. It does take a slightly twisted way at looking at the world. Most of the "wasted" paragraphs etc. are not actually wasted, if you're a mid lvl or beginner programer. Even some ... full review

"[resolved] Missing important accompanying material." - By Amazon Customer
Interesting concept. I am a big fan of Zed Shaw's Learn Python the Hard Way. It's a great method that fits well with how I like to learn.

So I purchased the Kindle version of the "Learn C the Hard Way". But right of the start the author emphasises the importance of "accompanying videos" which are integral to the book, and they are nowhere to be found.

There is a section in later chapters of the book with a procedure on how to get the videos but after registering and following the procedure on the Informit website the book links to, I did not get a download link.

I opened a support ticket with Informit and 2 days later got a response with a suggestion I contact Amazon. Pretty poor experience if you ask me.

    I just needed a quick refresher since I hadn't used C ... full review

"Clear and easy to understand" - By Shahiduzzaman Salim
If you're totally clueless when it comes to anything related to computer programming/language (like myself) and you want to learn, I would recommend this book. It really breaks everything down in an easy to understand manner. Basic concepts like size changers, sign changers, other prefixes, combinations, pointers, functions, operators, etc. are explained in the most basic fashion. If you are a coding beginner this is definitely a good addition to your collection.
