This is a well presented book with good illustrations. I am a teacher that has used the information from this to help my students gain a better understanding of character development, gesture, lighting, and color considerations.

"Very Helpful for Children's Book Illustrations" - By Joyanna Hirst
Very helpful for character design. I'm a graphic designer working on a children's book and I found this book was a great way to learn about character design. I really enjoyed the 'assignments' it was a great way to try out designing a character and then see what others have made. It reminded me of the same kind of feedback you receive in school when all your classmates have the same design project. Seeing what others have done really helps to learn the craft.

I just heard a lecture by Tom Bancroft & his brother Tony Bancroft, I enjoyed hearing them speak about their experiences. They were very helpful, funny and resourceful. I would highly recommend it even if you haven't read the book! :)

"Very cool idea book" - By Amazon Customer (Naples, FL)
I have been a frustrated cartoonist since I was six. In my professional career, I have attempted to use cartoons to illustrate points in presentations and marketing pieces. This book gave me the pointers to make my doodles come to life with much more impact. It was well organized and brought into focus concepts that were evading my attempts to draw my own cartoons. The book made the "secrets" seem obvious and simple. This is a must have for anyone who wants their doodles to do more than just decorate the margins of their notes.

"Invaluable Resource" - By Steven Mark Mourglea (NC)
This book is invaluable as a resource for the various stages that go into designing and developing characters. It is an excellent teaching/learning resource for the beginner, and full of information that experienced artists can apply to their work.

I love Tom Bancroft's drawing style, and this book is full of illustrated examples of the tips and techniques he is describing. The illustrations are a nice size... one thing I hate is when art/instruction books have tiny little pictures that obscure detail... but these illustrations are a pleasure to look at.

For a companion book, I would highly recommend another book by Bancroft... Creating Characters with Personality: [[ASIN:0823023494 Creating Characters with Personality: For Film, TV, Animation, Video Games, and Graphic Novels]] I would, and will, give it the same review as this book.

"An indespensable book for character creation!" - By Skuwulfe
For many years I have been creating drawings for characters that I had wanted to flesh out and write stories for. Unfortunately, other than figuring out their most immediate characteristics I never had a good template for designing the whole character, not just "the look". Bryan's book Creative Character Design is a well written (and funny) read that takes you step by step through all the important levels of character design. Not only will you have a template for constructing a "mythos" for your character, you will understand how certain body poses and shapes affect the overall image of your characters. If you are interested in the field of creating characters for comic-books/graphic novels, or just have a great idea for a character that you want to give a complete design for, then this is the book for you. Keep in mind this isn't a ... full review

"Excellent Guide For Artists" - By ninsyl (Florida)
Exactly what I was looking for. The artwork by the featured artists, is truly splendid, and the foreword by David Nakayama on how he came to be a proffesional (meaning, earning a living) as a comic artist is truly inspiring. I'm also thankful that the spiel by Warren Louw on tools of the trade and how to use them, is included, as I've been "winging it" all along all this time. Although barely starting on digital art, I find the detailed instructions by Borislav Mitkov on creating digital images will immensely help me when I get to that stage. For beginners like myself, I need to practice on creating idealized figures first, of the human body, as told & illustrated by Steve Rude. There are other artists who contributed to this book to make it the one and only reference needed to creating comic art. I wish I had found ... full review

"He book is the best reference I have seen that helps keep the creative ..." - By Ryan L.
The book doesn't just cover the drawing aspects of creating characters, but actually going through the imagineering process. Jazza goes through the creative process on creating the backend part of the characters (the world, the characters life, what affects them, etc). He book is the best reference I have seen that helps keep the creative juices going and even helps dissolve having any creative blocks.

"An artsy manga gem!" - By Colin
Book arrived in great condition and is not only a high quality publication, but a fantastic addition to my art book collection. If your a fan of manga, you should definitely add the this little gem of quick education and beautiful art work to your collection. Sidenote: this kind of publicaton is more suited for a more knowledgeable and/or advanced artist/illustrator, rather than a fresh out the gate beginner to the art of manga or drawing.
