"they can delve into it and love it even more" - By muushuu10
Why is this a classic? Because it's such a timeless, interesting story. Classics Illustrated brings a complex story to life in comic book form for young readers to be introduced to the classics! Then when they've reached the reading level of the regular book, they can delve into it and love it even more!

"... and gave the a most interesting synopsis of the great classic of James Fenimore Cooper" - By Bonnie B Neely
This illustrated classic was well done and gave the a most interesting synopsis of the great classic of James Fenimore Cooper. I really enjoyed and appreciated the excellent background notes which greatly helped understand what was going on in the longer version of the book. The illustrations enhance the story and are colorful and add a lot to the story. I think the biographic information of Cooper at the end of this comic is very well written and helps the reader remember the book and want to read more of Cooper's novels. If you are helping young people as a teacher or parent when they read this book, the Discussion questions at the end are good for leading the discussion. Well done!

"After 50 years, even this version has become a classic!" - By JP Fish
Classics Illustrated are the best in literary adaptation of the great works of literature. And the fantasy classics seem to lend themselves best to the medium. This edition has been in print for over 50 years. I aught to know. That's how long ago I got my first copy.

"Both entertaining and insightful." - By Michael J. Skarpelos (San Jose, CA USA)
All translators must struggle with two competing goals: 1) being faithful to the original author and 2) making the translated text accessible to the reader. In this translation of _The Three Musketeers_, the translator, Richard Pevear, generally gravitates towards the first goal. His vocabulary choices almost always favor the original French usage rather than modern English usage. For example, early in the book, Pevear refers to Milady as Rochefort's "interlocutrix". Now I don't know about you, but I grew up going to California public schools, and if I ever used a word like "interlocutrix", I'd get my face bashed into a locker. My background notwithstanding, I think it's clear what's going on here. The word "interlocutrix" is an uncommon yet legitimate English word with French roots. Pevear has chosen to use the uncommon word in order to remain faithful to Dumas' original French text which presumably used the French cognate ... full review

"Present for a young anarchist" - By C. Adair
I remember Classic Comics when I was young. A young man I know couldn't believe there was a classic of Les Miserables -- so it was fun to get this for him.

"Entertaining! Fascinating! Captivating!" - By Barb W. (Canton, MI, US)
I bought this book for my 8 year old niece. I glanced at the book when it arrived, but then I couldn't put it down! The stories and illustrations are delightful. Some tales are familiar, but I read some stories that I had never read before. This book is great for children who are independent readers, but adults will enjoy the book too. Excellent book!

    "Highest recommendation" - By spcj
As a life-long avid comics reader who had only occasional exposure to Classics Illustrated and its many imitators, I initially picked up this book on impulse, since it seemed like a nice overall package that covered an area of comics history about which I knew almost nothing. I'm very glad I did because this is an excellent book. It is an extremely well-researched and very well-written history of a comic book series that, inexplicably, is often overlooked or given short shrift in other books about comics, though its publication spans the entire history of the comic book medium. It includes biographies of the series' many artists and examples of their work by way of hundreds of great illustrations. Those who, like me, have primarily been readers of superhero and adventure comics will be surprised to recognize some of the names that pop up here. Jack Kirby, ... full review

"A must-have for Disney movie fans, especially if you've never seen or read these before!" - By Jim Hollifield
It's a shame that this series isn't better known to Disney comics fans. Imagine your Sunday newspaper comics supplement containing a serial adaptation of a new Disney film - or one about to be released a few months down the road - with elaborate artwork spanning three or four months (and in a few cases, even longer).

The long-running series ended in 1987, and it's worth noting that a good number of Disney films saw their only comic adaptation via this Sunday comic strip, including Third Man on the Mountain, Savage Sam, The Three Lives of Thomasina, Those Calloways, and many more into the 1970s and 80s.

This first volume starts at the beginning with The Story of Robin Hood, and includes 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The art and story improved through the years, but to have these in a first volume - with a second one ... full review
