"A very useful book on complex numbers" - By Vicentiu Radulescu
Mathematics is amazing not only in its power and beauty, but also in the way that it has applications in so many areas. The aim of this book is to stimulate young people to become interested in mathematics, to enthuse, inspire, and challenge them, their parents and their teachers with the wonder, excitement, power, and relevance of mathematics.

This book is a very well written introduction to the fascinating theory of complex numbers and it

contains a fine collection of excellent exercises ranging in difficulty from the fairly easy, if calculational, to the more challenging. As stated

by the authors, the targeted audience is not standard and it "includes high school students and their teachers,

undergraduates, mathematics contestants such as those training for Olympiads or the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, their coaches, and any person interested in essential mathematics."

The book is ... full review

"Should be a "must read" for math students" - By Carl Mclaren (Haines City, Florida USA)
This inexpensive book covers material not easily found elsewhere but key in understanding complex functions. The problem with complex functions is they are hard to visualize because the input is a plane and the output is another plane. The book covers Circles, Moebius transforms, and Non-Euclidean Geometry. The level is senior undergraduate, 1st year graduate. The book is easy to understand with good exercises. I really like this book.

"Very good book. It teaches me all aspects of complex ..." - By Bernhard Metz
Very good book. It teaches me all aspects of complex numbers I need to learn for my study of differential equations, I like the large amount of problems and the solutions. I would find it better if there were all solution in the book not just 50%. The author also took care to show the applications sometimes for example in chapter 5 the visualization of what the line integrals mean is a bit weak. I can recommend this book for someone who wants to have a good overview over complex numbers their applications and properties.

"A Tremendously Insightful Presentation of Complex Analysis" - By Eze (Valencia, Spain)
Although mathematical visualization has not been as implicitly forbidden in modern mathematics as claimed by Needham, his work is nonetheless highly innovative even besides his wonderful graphs. The reason is that his prose accompanies very well his extraordinary insight and intuition for the subject. It is purposely not extremely rigorous in order to make the presentation smoother. (This is not so bad as many think. Complex analysis is the target of many excellent books which, fortunately, do not all take the same approach. For more rigor see Ahlfors' "Complex Analysis.")
This book can therefore be an ideal way to get started with complex analysis or even to further one's understanding in the subject. If you are looking for a very affordable predecessor with a similar intuitive style, check Flanigan's "Complex Variables."

"An excellent(and cheap!) text" - By A MATH NERD
This book might just be the best Dover text out there-which isn't really saying much, considering how many of their books are total stinkers. To me, this is nearly an ideal math book: clear logical development punctuated with very well-chosen exercises. I know of no better book on the basics of complex analysis. If you've seen basic material about complex numbers and functions, as well as a few basic facts about real analysis, you can start in chapter seven, where complex integration is introduced, and used to prove all sorts of wonderful things. But if you haven't seen these basics, they are well-presented in the opening chapters, making this book extremely accessible. But it is in chapter seven that the book really begins, which is where the fundamental theorems of complex analysis start being proved. All of these ... full review

    "A real gem" - By B. Style
The other reviewers have already done a terrific job describing the content. I'll just add that while a profesional/accademic mathematician might find this book a bit informal, as an amateur I really appreciate its appeal to intuition and the author's tendency to review the meaning of terminology for a few of it's subsequent uses immediately following it's introduction. Not a difficult read, but a working knowledge of calculus for one variable is prerequisite. Seems to be out of print as of this date -- I've had good luck with used book purchases through Amazon marketplace from dealers with positive ratings better than 95%.

"Review of the 4th revised edition (not the new 2007 edition)" - By Richard Frost (San Diego, CA)
I am a mathematics teacher and have used this book as either a required reading or suggested supplement for a variety of courses, including math history for liberal arts students, number theory for mathematics majors, etc.

The book (4th edition) is divided into Part I and Part II -- the latter comprising only the last 4th of the book. Any successful college student will find Part I informative, and at times wonderfully enlightening about the development of the concepts of number and measurement. This book was written for the armchair reader, so expect a reader-friendly style of writing. However, I have found that Part II can be quite challenging for liberal arts students -- and quite stimulating to those whose studies included a more rigorous tour of mathematics. Do not let this bother you! I think Part I is worth the price of the ... full review

"Learn MATLAB by actually doing MATLAB" - By J. M. Ross (Springfield, Ohio)
To use this very practical book effectively, one must(should) have some level of the...MATLAB software...installed or have access to it.
Though not a Programmed Instruction book, common in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, you are encouraged to work your way through the book. That is, from the very beginning you are working with actual code as you learn the proper formats. You learn by actually being a participant rather than an observer! Questions, problems, and meaningful exercises are the main methods for teaching and learning used in this book. They are plentiful throughout the book. Each page requires the reader to actually practice what is being taught. The book provide the proper formats for MATLAB coding.

A beginner will find this book to be a full-fledged source for learning MATLAB. Those with experience would find it useful for reviewing in general and/or refreshing one's memory of topics and techniques ... full review

"Not just for the K-3 Crowd!" - By R. Wood (Michigan)
I bought this book thinking that I would still be working with younger students for the upcoming school year. Of course then I get moved back to my first love: upper elementary. I had the book though and decided to read it anyway. Gosh am I glad I did!! Students all over the country struggle with REAL number sense and the routines and ideas in this book are awesome and will be relatively easy to implement. They don't all have to be used but it's set up in a way that you can use what works for you as long as you make it a routine that is predictable.

I will have 4th and 5th graders this year, most of whom scored lowest in "numbers and operations" on their end-of-year math assessments. I am excited to adapt the ideas in this book for my older friends and hopefully help ... full review

"Getting started in math analysis" - By Palle E T Jorgensen (Iowa City, Iowa United States)
This book by Shilov covers the fundamentals in beginning analysis(both real and complex). It has in common with Walter Rudin's book (entitled 'Real and Complex Analysis') that it covers both real functions (integration theory and more), as well as Cauchy's theorems for analytic functions. Shilov's book is at an undergraduate level, and it can easily be used for self-study. The Dover edition is affordable. Rudin's book is for the beginning graduate level, and it is widely used in math departments around the world. Both books have stood the test of time.

Comparison of Shilov with Rudin: Rudin's 'Real and Complex' has become an institution, and I have to admit I have loved it since I was a student myself, but conventional wisdom will have it that Shilov is a lot gentler on students, and much easier to get started with: It stresses motivation a bit more, the exercises are ... full review
