"A must read for those who truly wish to understand..." - By alienpup (Arizona, USA)
If like me, you are still trying to comprehend the causes and devastating effects of World War II, this record of personal battle line experiences is a must read. But be prepared for a very intimate and potentially disturbing experience. Nothing is glorified. It's simply recounted.

My most humble thanks to the Eckhertz family for sharing these very valuable and impressive documents.

"A Readable Account of a Critical Day" - By Janet K. Schwartzkopf (Palm Springs, CA)
Having seen the movie on which this is based several times, I finally got around to reading the book, and I'm glad I did. Hollywood obviously has to go for the drama -- and this event had plenty, obviously -- but it was nice to read about the perspectives of those besides the colonels and generals. And, since so much of the author's research was done via first-person interviews, there was certainly a great deal of perspective to go around. As with the movie, it was also good to see how the day unfolded for both sides, and it gives a pretty clear idea of why D-Day was a success for the allies, just as it shows why the majority of deaths that day were on Omaha Beach.

More than most books, I think, the real genius of this version of such a critical day in world history is ... full review

"The major historical event of the 20th century." - By Kindle Customer
Well researched and very detailed. Specific names, dates, and places with detailed maps. Well written. Beavor tells the story like he is speaking to me person to person. We went to Normandy and saw the battlefield.

"More Bite than Sugar" - By R. Isaac (Hamilton, New Zealand)
To start I should clarify two things, firstly, I like Max Hastings as a writer and historian. I like the way he incorporates the entire spectrum of participants in the story which takes the 'grind' out of reading an historic account. He also doesn't 'romanticise' topics like D Day which, of recent times, has received a number of glowing commentaries as we celebrate those who took part. I don't want to take away from those who fought, as I have genuine respect for their contribution, but recently I believe Hollywood and some historians have glorified the actual events, clouding the realities of the battle and the 'knife edge' it was fought on for the first few weeks.Thank God for the Russian Front as I don't believe the Allied armies would have succeeded had they faced more units such as Hitler Jugend,12th SS Panzer, Panzer Lehr and the Parachute Divison.Enough emphasis ... full review

"Great informative read for the pre-teen and teen age generation." - By Joan
This is a thorough review of events leading up to and including the duration and conclusion of world war II.
It is a compelling and horrific story that enables young people to "live" the history.

"Outstanding book and great photos." - By Ken H.
Simply put, this book is outstanding and the photos are great, I had the privilege of touring the Normandy battlefields a few years ago, and I wish this book had already been in print then. The aerial photos make it so much easier to put things into perspective and understand where the various places are.

"After my visit" - By J. Futer
I had just returned from France, visiting the Norman coast, and decided I should read more about D-Day and the beach landings. I visited, Pegasus bridge, Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah beaches. I saw the concrete casements, bunkers and observation posts overlooking the beaches. Stephen E. Ambrose made those places come alive and gave me a much greater appreciation for what took place there.

To all of the brave men who lost their lives, we can never repay them for what the did. To the men who survived and were able to climb to the top of the bluffs and press on against the enemy, we owe our deepest gratitude. For, it was your courage under extreme duress, that the allied forces were able to push the enemy back and take what was deemed impossible, from them. Yours truly was the greatest generation, and all of the men ... full review

"Just as good as the first" - By travisbe (California)
Just as good as the first. I'm glad he captured the thoughts and feelings of the German soldiers on that day, and a lot of their feelings as time went on. It really hit me hard, as the war stories are very vivid, translated beautifully and made me think about war and how it affects the soldier. I was a history major, and wrote several papers on the political aspects of the world wars, so it was very fulfilling for me to read these stories and get a more informed understanding.

"Well worth the money, and a VERY good book!" - By Ralph DeMattia (Fayetteville, Pennsylvania United States)
I never realized that when my family was leaving LeHarve, France in June of 1966, we steamed right in front of the entire Normandy beachhead and didn't know it, which is funny because my dad's brother Ben was a ranger who stormed the beach at Pont du Hoc. I recently inherited the 1928A1 Thompson he carried then, in FINE condition, and will always treasure it, especially now. This book has many great pictures, especially the two-page spread showing the entire beachhead. Another GREAT Amazon find for me!!

"Vivid, gripping book that puts you on the beach during the midst of the D Day invasion" - By Amazon Customer
A very personal, down to the minute account of the men who fought and died on the beach at D Day. Often accounts of this pivotal battle take a 30,000 foot view. This book gets down to the details; the experiences of the infantry men heading towards their seemingly impossible task on the beach early in the morning on D Day. If you have ever wondered what it must have felt like to be there, this is the book that transports you to that place with frankness but with dignity. It sheds light on some of the unsung heroes of that day that time has faded our memories of. My only critique is that is sometimes borders on repetitious; the seasickness of soldiers, the weight of their packs and the mistakes of the landing get revisited again and again. Perhaps that is a takeaway though, that the experiences recounted ... full review

Loved this book. The illustrations added much to the feeling of wading ashore with lead splashing around me. Such a loss for the world when Capra's film was destroyed in the darkroom.

"D-Day History Worth Reading" - By FmrAFpilot (Dallas, TX)
Gives a true sense of what happened - the chaos , bodies all over, heroism, and, yes, outright stupidity/cowardice of coxswains who dropped landing barges' ramps is water so deep that many drowned as they tried to run off. Read this if you want new insight as to what happened on D-Day.
