"A Must-Have for Any Designer" - by J. Taylor (Illinois, USA)
I'm a college student majoring in interactive media and I bought this book for independent study. My degree courses often deal with specific aspects or applications of design, but I wanted to gain a better understanding of general design principles. I am happy to report that this book is rich with design information that can be utilized by all species of designers!

Each topic is given two pages - one page is more text-heavy and the other has visuals that demonstrate or exemplify the design principle at hand. Despite the seemingly brief dedication to each principle, the book is dense, efficient, and favors minimalism so although you may be able to scan over a principle in seconds, you need to take the time and study the information being presented in order to soak all of it in. Lidwell does a fantastic job at providing a survey of some of the most ... full review

"Learn the Essentials...Avoid Gridlock" - by John M (Atlanta, GA)
Tondreau makes very few assumptions about readers' foreknowledge of grids and as such, jumps right into the fundamentals within the first 20 pages. Tondreau provides a vocabulary for grids that might seem obvious at first (i.e. columns, modules, margins, spatial zones, and flowlines), but also explains complex grid systems (i.e. hierarchical grids, modular, multicolumn) and methodologies for implementing them (i.e. typography, color, media forms, etc). What makes the book interesting and eliminates it from simply being a reference guide is the constant use of real world projects that illustrate the grid principle being addressed as well as a source of inspiration. In addition, the book makes a conscious effort to inform readers that there is a difference between `principles' and `rules' and designers should not 'lock' into a paradigm that stifles creativity.

I strongly recommend that this book be read not only by designers, but by anyone person that builds interfaces ... full review

"Importance of anatomy knowledge for creating and drawing creatures" - by Catalina
After reading her books, Terryl Whitlach became one of my professional raw-models. Through this 3 book collection (I only bought this one and "Principles of creature design"), she shows you her work and process, as well as her "rules" to achieve a realistic believable creature. Don't expect a detailed drawing tutorial because it is not that. It is more like a very complete portfolio with very useful advises from the author. You will find some examples of animals and their full anatomy.
The printing quality of this book is remarkable; one can truly appreciate her art in detail. The binding is very good as well.
The author's writing is brief and clear.
If you are into animal anatomy drawing and/or character concept design... well, you must have Whitlach's work in hand. You will find this book useful and nurturing.

"Provided more creative inspiration and fantastic practical ideas to fuel my need to always improve my design skill set." - by JOEnSF (San Francisco, CA)
Provided me with great artistic inspiration and as reference book I keep right on my desk. I haven't felt as inspired and creative since design school some 25 years ago. My studies were primarily for photogrPhy in college, but I ended up in the graphic design market sector, so this book brings me up to full speed fast on technique and creative thinking that I missed in college. It also ALWAYS a good idea to read a book by and for design students, because they keep me on my toes and open to new ideas that just didn't exist when I was in school. Better yet hire young designers right out of school, if you have the time to take them on because they have new idea on new concpets that have been game changers since I was last in college.

"Excellent book! In my current role as an architect" - by Darin
Context, context, context... Excellent book! In my current role as an architect, I have been working on resurrecting a Big-Ball-of-Mud application into something that can be maintained by anyone other than the original developer. This book gives hope to those that have been tasked with challenges like this. While the solutions provided are (self-proclaimed) not silver bullets, they are realistic, and the code samples are practical. It covers a number of DDD patterns, but it is clear to me now that DDD is much more than just a collection of patterns. Mostly, what I learned from this book was the DDD philosophy.

"SOLID MEETS .NET IN A GREAT BOOK" - by MikeDevDude (St. Louis, MO United States)
This is one of the most helpful software engineering books I've ever read. It is most useful for people who have some real world experience in .NET development. I couldn't have gotten so much out of the book without my last year of work developing API services for a major thermostat manufacturer.

I've encountered a lot of the pain this book hopes to remove. I devoured this book. I read 10 chapters of it while on "vacation" and don't regret a minute spent reading it. I'm excited about taking the concepts one bite at a time and trying to integrate them into my real work. Great book.

"Fun to read & great presentation" - by Niklas Johnsson (Santa Monica, CA, USA)
This book was fun and quite addictive! It contains a collection of unrelated design principles that can be browsed and read in random order. The presentation is very attractive. Can be recommended not only to marketers and designers, but also to anybody merely remotely interested in this topic.

The weakness is that there is no attempt to create a frame work, overall guidance, or step-by-step advice on how to combine these principles.

"Great book - New to Graphic Design" - by Tommie
I am a newbie to graphic design. I like the book because it is not very wordy and it gets to the point. I can understand the concepts behind graphic design. There are illustrations of what the art looks like for each topic. The pages are thick and the book is nicely constructed. I am glad I purchased this book.

"This is a very nice book, sadly for me" - by Paula
This is a very nice book, sadly for me, I thought it would cover Universal Design as applied to Interior Design. It covers a lot, from graphic design to ads, etc. So a very nice book but know- it is NOT an interior design book.
