Great book for understanding culture of scale software development and deployment. Good ideas and a very simple read. Worth keeping on the shelf as a reference and keeping current on how to identify and reduce toil.

"Excellent resource for A/E firms" - By JLF
I own a 10 person civil engineering firm and I recently decided it was time to create a strategic plan to chart our path to growth and profitability. I didn't have much to go by, but couldn't resist this book because it's industry specific. Now that I've read it, I can say that it is an excellent resource. Soon I will begin to prepare our strategic plan as outlined in this book - and I'm excited to get started! With confidence I recommend this book to anyone in the A/E industry that is interested in creating or refining a strategic plan!

"Libro fundamental para la gestión de la innovación...." - By Carlos Ortega Fernandez (MADRID, MADRID Spain)

"Great Book with Practical Advice" - By O. Auguste
I liked this book because it was easy to read. Compared to other books I've read which contained theories and philosophies, this book provided actionable steps and practical strategies to starting an engineering company. What really got my attention is when Rick discussed some of his own obstacles/mistakes and how he would have prevented them. This book is for engineers in all stages of their career and a good reference for starting an engineering company.

"Well worth owning" - By Christopher Thomas
This is a very good book on the nuts and bolts of how to launch an architect's office. It is extremely comprehensive for a small book, and it covers matters that are almost impossible to find elsewhere like how much to budget for your E&O insurance premiums. The author speaks as a well seasoned architect mentoring you through the process from start to finish. The only thing I would like to see changed in the future edition are the pesky sentences that read "Many a designer..." scattered throughout the book, just say "Many designers..." and the thought will flow more smoothly. Otherwise this book is great!

This is an outstanding work by an acomplished structural engineer, Yasmin Khan, about her father, Fazlur R. Khan, often cited as the father of the modern skyscpaper.
Yasmin Khan is uniquely qualified and presents very difficult structural concepts developed by her father (Sears Tower, John Hancock Center, One Shell Square, etc.) in a manner everone can understand.
This book is a must for anyone contemplating a career in Architecture or Civil Engineering.

"Hire The Best and Free Tibet Goji-Chocolate Creme Pie" - By H. Le (Philadelphia, PA United States)
It takes a conscious effort for me to choose a book and to spend the time read it through. It is especially rare for me to write a review because that is a dedication of couple of uninterrupted hours (almost an impossible feat in my family with a relentless toddler). With that being said, this book compelled me to share my opinion because I think it gives an extraordinary first person (Laszlo Block) account of how a company (Google) excel with its talent acquisition, retainment, development, and sometimes termination. And most importantly, its continuous improvement to anticipate the needs of an ever-expanding company.

    I believe the book itself attracts three primary types of audience;
    (1) Managers and Executives who are looking to build a stronger team/company
    (2) Human Resource personnel looking to develop themselves and their organization
    (3) And finally, people who are interested in innovation/new ideas
    I happen ... full review

"Must Read" - By interested reader
Achieving Zero is an insightful and inspiring book that outlines the creation of a professional services firm from a dream to a successful enterprise of more than 1,000 people. Mr. Evans describes the process including the triumphant successes and the hard times. His depictions of the difficult lessons learned are shared with humility and humor. Most importantly, this story shows the incredible impact that a founder has on a company, through the founder's personality, focus, and values. This book clearly shows the importance of careful consideration of core elements such as vision, values, and culture in creating a successful organization. Anyone considering starting a company of any kind should read this book.

"Don't ask for permission to do something great." - By Gina Lynch
One of the most inspiring books I have ever read. A few life changing points for me:

    1) First intro chapter shows how relentless the author was. Great lesson there. He didn't ask for permission, he just went out and wrote it. Said he was going to write it with or without him on board. Which ultimately won Elon's respect since that's how he operates too.

    2) Elon and his brother Kimbal coming over at 18 years old from south Africa. Their tactic about picking up the newspaper and cold calling the most interesting people to take to lunch is awesome. I challenge myself to do this now and I think its a great strategy to get out of your comfort zone. I gather he had the idea for pay pal with that tactic - it landed him the bank internship where he discovered the inefficiencies of banking ... full review

    "Great information" - By Manchester
I must say that I am very impressed by the content in this book; honestly, I wasn't expecting too much when I first got it - but the material went way above and beyond my initial expectations and I found it incredibly helpful and informative. What I admire the most about this book is how concise and clear the author expresses even the most complex systems and formulas into a way that is easy to understand and learn from. The book is very detailed and sophisticated but this writing style of the author compliments the content really well due to the practicality and understandability that it's written in. This book is perfect for any kind of architect, whether the reader is a beginner or an expert - they will definitely be able to learn a lot
