"`Our selfishness was our weakness...'" - By Tazzyt2bossye (QUEEN CITY, USA)
L.C. Duncan has worked tirelessly to build his car dealership empire to provide his family with the finest luxuries of life. His family consists of his precocious baby girl, Paris, who seems to always attract danger. Her twin Rio, likes to challenge his father with his flamboyant nature. Junior is a quiet calm amongst his siblings with his dependability as well as his intelligence...and Vegas, the oldest child is away with no explanation...family business presumably. Harris is the family attorney as well as the oldest daughter, London's husband, and their family portrait isn't as picture perfect as they'd like everyone to believe. Last and not least is Orlando, who has just accepted his father's crown as CEO of Duncan Motors but he has this annoying habit of going MIA without a plausible explanation. LC decides that it's time for his descendants to mandate their ... full review

"The family tree is still rotting." - By D. Baker (Suffolk, VA)
I went thru this book so fast! I just couldn't stop! The family Duncan has found another way to pull in more cash, and it's with the new creation of a drug called H.E.A.T. With this product, sales will go thru the roof, and the profit margin alone will put the Duncans on top of the drug game. With the backbiting alone and the introduction of Sasha, this made for a really tight story. I know my co-workers were begging me to read this, and I'm glad I did! Now that Vegas is about to come in, I'm ready for the finale. I don't know who's gonna co-author on this one, but I hope that they are able to keep the pace. GO CARL AND TREASURE!!!!

"I found this book very informative and useful for several reasons" - By Michel Accad
About 30 years ago, my father's family business went through very tumultuous times which could have largely been avoided if the family members involved had had access to the counsel that the book provides.

I found this book very informative and useful for several reasons:

    1) Many business advice books have a good central argument that is presented in the first chapter or two, and the rest of the pages are just repetitious or simply filler. This book provides very clear practical advice chapter by chapter, covering all aspects pertinent to family businesses. There is essentially no redundancy, so I found myself learning things until the last page.

    2) Although the advice in the book stands on its own, the book makes a very compelling case for family businesses to periodically seek the services of a family business consultant. It is very hard for ... full review

"Not What I Was Expecting" - By Angela Burnett
This is not what I was waiting to come out. I was hoping to read more about the Duncan's at the present time. I am kind of tired of all the back stories. I am ready to how the Duncan's end up. Don't get me it was a good book and I thought Niles died after his encounter with Paris, but apparently he is pretty slick. I will read the other book, because I want to see how this story ends.

"The Little Red Book of Family Business" - By Vance Trueblood
David Bork's Little Red Book of Family Business is a delight to read! A wealth of information for family businesses everywhere. Belongs on your bedstand or your coffee table as a handy reference. I also recommend it to all the students at the University taking our "Family Business Dynamics" course. As a Director of a Family Business Council, I have made sure that each of our members get a copy. Take an hour and discover what's inside the little red book. It will improve the way you deal with problems and opportunities in your family business.

One example from David Bork is profound and applicable. In Chapter 2 Business, he says "The cost of getting a new customer is much greater than the cost of keeping an existing one. In retail, this ratio is 7:1."

    "Excellent" - By Andy Johnson
Keeping the family baggage out of the family business is a wonderful and deeply insightful exploration of the way family systems intrude into business systems in family owned and run businesses. The book reflects a deep knowledge and mastery of this subject. In the family business literature, this is a standout!

"Intellectual Tour de Force for Everyone" - By John N. Doggett (Austin, Texas USA)
I picked this book up because I was getting ready to consult with a family-owned firm about their strategy. My previous strategy consulting work has been with startups, small and medium sized and Fortune 500 firms. I knew that helping senior managers develop their business strategy might be an entirely different matter when the firm was a private, family held enterprise.

This book opened my eyes to the unique challenges of family businesses. It helped me understand the compromises that must be made when looking at the business strategy options for family firms. Most importantly, it helped me understand that the health of the family and the relationships between the generations was more important than pure business strategy thinking. This is exactly the insight that I was looking for. I learned much more than I expected and am deeply appreciative of the authors' ... full review

"Very, very good!!!!!" - By Kindle Customer (chicago,il.)
This addition to the family business kept me in stiches. Lou with his whorish ways. Levi slow but still knew how to treat a woman and find love, LC, the smart brother and Larry the homicidal brother took care of business. This one gave us the insight on how the family business came about. Loved it.

"Drawing false conclusions is one of the worst things someone can do in a business" - By Amazon Customer
This book has helped me tremendously! I was hesitant when joining one of my childhood friends family businesses, while the position that I decided to take aligned with what I want to do, I still had mixed feelings about my ability to progress within the company. Reading this book has changed the way that I view my job now. Those feelings I once had have gone away because I began to trust my friends way of business and how he handled both relative and non relative employees. Its all about trusting you instincts and their instincts Bruske/ Kolbe explain. Drawing false conclusions is one of the worst things someone can do in a business. Once I had learned to not draw conclusions about my friends business I realized I do have the ability to progress in the company. My friend/ boss does a good job of separating family ... full review

"Although it's short, it's a very informative and insightful read on family business" - By Paul Franciosa (Toronto, Canada)
I'm an avid reader of family business books, and I recently re-read Perpetuating the Family Business by John Ward and found myself tabbing numerous pages that contained insightful and important ideas that just about every family business can put into practice.

Ward begins by laying out his conceptual foundation for familes, which contain his "Four P's" - 1. Policies before the need; 2. sense of Purpose; 3. Process; and 4. Parenting. Understanding and practicing the four P's should provide families in business with a decent start in the right direction toward developing a sustainable and successful family and business.

The heart of the book contains Ward's "50 Lessons" for family businesses, broken down into three sections: lessons for owner-manager businesses; lessons for sibling partnerships; and lessons for cousin collaborations. At the end of each section he briefly applies the lessons to the story of two media ... full review
