"Another solid tool in the toolbox" - by Amy Biddle (United States)
The author has provided a great map in this book. I read books on fitness and nutrition regularly to keep my head in the game so I don't get derailed by the constant bombardment of marketing of processed foods we're surrounded by. This book is a great touch point! I've heard that fitness and health are the result of nutrition and exercise. Different people say that these are important in different combinations. Some say they're equally important. Others put emphasis on one over the other. No matter which you believe, or more importantly which you experience, this book is a nice primer on both eating and working out. Also it was great to see the value placed on walking as well as resistance training. Too many folks bash one and favor the other. We need both. Nicely done!

"Informative, science based guide to strength training" - by Brian O. Roberts
This book was extremely helpful to me in informing my body transformation over the past 8 months. I appreciate that everything in it is researched and science based. I did my own workout plan but lifted according to the theory of the book. There are so many pros on why you should read this I won't enumerate them but the cons that knocked off a star are below:

This book reads like the author took their book geared towards men and just did some basic editing to orient it to women. The job is sloppy, there are some pronouns wrong and examples that clearly come from a book written for men. Like he assumes your spotting partner will be a man. While women do benefit from training like men and that's the whole point of this book it feels like writing a book geared towards women was an afterthought and this ... full review

"When one fitness writer can compliment another on their work, that makes for a pretty strong endorsement" - by M. Spitzer (Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA)
Since I am a scientist and fitness author myself, I try to make a point of keeping in touch with all the stuff that comes out regarding fitness related topics.
I saw some of the negative comments here to the effect of ... "this book says nothing new"
I felt compelled to comment on this and defend Mr. Matthews.

The truth is that there really is not a whole lot new in the area of weight loss, muscle building and fitness.
In fact if you look at old Joe Weider magazines from the 1960s and 1970s, you will find most of the "old school" principles discussed then are still what works great today.
The use of compound exercises and reps ranging from warm up to heavy in a classic pyramid were the basis of routines used by guys in the pre-steroid" era.......... guys like Grimek, Steve Reeves and others.
But some of this classic training ... full review

"This book is awesome!!" - by melissa
This book is awesome!!! I heard Stacy Sims on anothermotherrunner podcast. I was totally intrigued by the interview and got this book. I actually bought it on my kindle first, but have since ordered the print because it is such a great resource! Much easier to find what I want in the printed book. She has exercises with how to pictures in there, that are easier to access with the printed book. Back to the contents! She explains how a womans body works. It is so insightful. I'm a runner and she offers up so much great advice as far as nutrition, fueling, recovery, why we get those awful stomach aches sometimes when we run and are not fueling properly. I love this book and have been re-reading it as I get ready to train for my second marathon. I want to implement what she says and hopefully have a ... full review

"Be your own boss!" - by SpokaneAmazonFan
This program is great! I love that each day is mapped out including the meals if you include the nutrition program in your purchase (I highly recommend it). The 4 week pre-training is a must for those of us who haven't been active for a while. The whole program is really worth it and really works if followed. That's the key, though, you actually have to do it! Since I have been following the program, I have lost a couple of inches off of my waist, and seen my total cholesterol plunge by 46 points! I'm 50 years old, post-menopausal, have had hip surgery, and work in a completely sedentary job. This program is making a huge difference in my fitness and overall well being. I love being my own BOSS!

"Excellent Resource - Get the Kindle Edition if You're Taking a Class!" - by M Wolski
I rented a copy of this book for a masters level course on sports physiology that I was taking recently. The book was fairly comprehensive, was laid out in a logical format, and was easy to understand. Although human biology is a complicated process, and the physicist in me is not a big fan of the less definitive nature of the biological sciences, I'll say that this book does take care not to draw many spurious conclusions, sticks mostly to well researched conclusions and admits uncertainty when it exists. There are very few questions that I had about nutrition or the way our body interacts with nutrients that were left unanswered or unaddressed. The kindle method of delivery I chose is probably the best I can imagine for a text book, since it allows you to easily search for that particular phrase you wanted to cite. Whether this is for ... full review

"Inspiring" - by Brenna Corliss (HEMET, CA)
I heard about this book and the wonderful Steve Zim from Gabbie Hanna who had nothing but glowing words or gratitude and respect for him. I trust her and now after reading this book, I trust Steve. Not only does it give tons of examples and options, it explains the scientific reasonings behind why the program works, which is something that I value greatly. I look forward to my journey now instead of dreading the start of a diet fad!

"Even my kids love them and they don't even realize they are eating ..." - by STEVEN A CARTER
I've purchased many bodybuilding cookbooks and they all seem to be the same thing...bake, broil, or grill a chicken breast with some McCormick seasoning poured on them. This is NOT that kind of book. I've eaten about 10 different recipes from her book and every one has been phenomenal! Even my kids love them and they don't even realize they are eating healthy.

"Simplicity is the strength of this book" - by Arnab S.
Simplicity is underrated. Food should be healthy, tasty and easy to make. Clear measurements and macros and easy procedures are useful for long term sustainability of cooking habits. I scanned the recipes in an hour. Will make some of them on my weekend meal prep.
