An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Dennis has written a comprehensive book on the Great Lakes from the perspective of personal experience, scientific data and historical background. He describes the area in its early pristine beauty, from the Indian tribes to the first European settlers and the dawning of industrialization that almost destroyed this natural preserve of geology, flora, fauna and indigenous species. With attention to the tales of the past, Dennis writes of the gradual evolution of natural beauty into a vast resource for lumber, farm products, shipping and related industries, including the influx of a population that has grown around opportunity, all imbued with the awesome grandeur of these vast bodies of water.
On a four-week voyage through the Great Lakes, Dennis views the area from the water, as opposed to his many travels along the shorelines, the exhausting, but fulfilling days on board filled with the lore of the ... full review(90) -

This book tells more of the background of the Great Lakes. Problems with the currents, temperatures, payloads, and the experience of the captains.
More history of the individual ships and crew. My uncle sailed these lakes and I was too young at the time to really understand what he went through.
I highly recommend this book if you are at all curious about the Great Lakes.(57) -

A very well researched and straight forward review of the ships of the lakes and their evolution. Mr. Thompson has done his homework and presented a recap that I will refer to many times in the future for reference. I would like to have seen more photos and more discussion of the earlier bulk freighter evolution but this material will wet your appetite for more. I hope to see more books of this type soon. Well worth the investment(2) -

Intricate, detailed, and very insightful review of the history of European interaction with the Ottawa and other Indian tribes operating in and around the central Great Lakes. By drawing in an Indian perspective, the author does an outstanding job of transforming a relatively monochrome picture of events and their meaning from a European point of view into a technicolor one that considers what was taking place on the Indian side, how events looked there, and what were the internal dynamics among the Indian tribes involved that influenced events in ways Europeans at the time (and since) understood little. Excellent book.(16) -

As someone who has sailed on Great Lakes steamships, I found this book to pretty well capture the essense of the trade. One innacuracy in the book deals with women on board. The author states that women are more likely to sail on freighters these days because there is little if any hard physical labor. While many women would be more than capable of working shipboard, I can assure you there is PLENTY of physically demanding jobs to do on board. Also note that the industry is constantly evolving so many of the fleets have gotten smaller in the years since the book was penned. All in all, though, if you have ever been intrigued by Great Lakes shipping, this book is the most comprehensive review I have ever seen. A good book.(5) -

I am glad to see this volume is now available at a lower price. (I see my hardcover copy was purchased August 25, 1993, for the price of $76.50.) Recently doing some research work with Great Lakes Indian history gave thought to also offering a review on this volume I have had in my home library for 17 years.
Up until retirement a few years ago I had been a life long resident of Ohio, and had taken some courses in Ohio and Great Lakes history at The Ohio State University. With an interest in anthropology as a course of study at OSU had also traveled quite a bit following the local Indian tribes and trails. Had also been a member of the Ohio Historical Society. However, in spite of all this, still needed something more to give me better insight and grasp of Great Lakes and Ohio ... full review(12) -

"A Wonderful Book for a Son Who is Fascinated by Ship Wrecks" - By Michele Johnson
My youngest son loves to read about ship wrecks. While this book is about lesser-known wrecks (except the Edmund Fitzgerald), it provides a wonderful historical review of wrecks, why they happened, what their impact was, etc.(13) -

List Price: $34.95 Price: $31.40 You Save: $3.55 (10%) "Forget everything you learned about the taming of the West ..." - By R. Richard
Forget everything you learned about the taming of the West from Disney and elementary school history class. Songs upon the Rivers delivers a solid debunking of timeworn, inaccurate narratives about the creation of half of the United States. In Foxcurran, Bouchard, and Mallette well-documented book, native Americans are savvy negotiators who resort to dastardly deeds only when provoked and let French speaking fur trappers marry their daughters. Their offspring, a mixture of French and Indian blood called Metis, became a major force during this period, a thesis the authors successfully argue.
The book held my interest with its breezy writing and meaty descriptions of the quirky characters roaming the West at this time. I found the book much more interesting than historical narratives that get bogged down with inert descriptions of individuals and places. Spot-on metaphors, especially the rhizome theory, add to the story.(3) -
"An excellent, well written and thoroughly researched book which should ..." - By Mary Anne Young
An excellent, well written and thoroughly researched book which should be read by all environmental professionals in great lakes country (i.e. southern Ontario, northern New York, Ohio, and Michigan). The discussion of how this area was shaped by different cultures throughout the millennia is fascinating and sheds a new light on the commonly held idea of the "primeval wilderness" that European settlers faced when they first colonized this part of North America.(3) -

Price: $24.99 "True insight into the Upper Peninsula" - By Susan Hargreaves (Upper Peninsula, MI)
This book, originally written in 1944, is a true insight into the life of natives of the Upper Peninsula. Martin wrote these stories based on real interviews with the characters of this wild and untamed land. And through the stories one gets a unique perspective on not only the depth with which folks loved this place, but also the various ways in which this land was exploited for its timber, iron ore, and copper. It was in many ways the treasures that this land held that shaped its evolution. And after these treasures were depleted, the true value of the Upper Peninsula was discovered: its pristine and unchanged beauty, and its unique ecosystem, wildlife, and human inhabitants. Folks who stayed and never left, and folks who came and never left, all recognized what a sanctuary existed here. Somehow time has not yet changed the majority of this wonderful place called ... full review(5)
