Henry Fonda in his splendor, in each and every film. So glad these films have been preserved for us.
When TV programming goes on hiatus for the summer, we turn to these old films for a blast from the past.(17) -
"Excellent performances and good variety" - By Thomas E. Davis (Seattle, WA)
With the exception of an overlong and rather turgid military epic, "Battle of the Bulge," this is a strong collection for Henry Fonda fans. It presents the actor in movies with a range of themes and fine supporting actors like Jack Lemmon, Charles Laughton, Walter Pidgeon, Burgess Meredith, Gene Tierney, Robert Ryan, Dana Andrews, James Cagney, and Vera Miles. Great directors are also represented in Alfred Hitchcock's suspenseful crime drama "The Wrong Man", Otto Preminger's superb political piece "Advise and Consent", and John Ford's entertaining wartime comedy "Mister Roberts."
All four DVDs offer trailers and other extras including commentary on the Preminger and Ford films and featurettes on the other two. "Mister Roberts" has excerpts from Ed Sullivan's TV series "Toast of the Town," paying tribute to the actor, and from the documentary "Fonda on Fonda," covering his work on the play and the movie. "Excellent cast" - By Charles R. Foreman (Fort Worth, Texas)
Legendary director John Ford was best known for his Westerns but also had a deft hand where the ocean was involved. Movies like Mr. Roberts and Donovan's Reef have inspired me to some day acquire a tropical tan. In Mr. Roberts an excellent cast does what they are all good at; acting. Henry Fonda displays that rare ability he had to make you share his feelings and dreams. In time you want him to be off that boat almost as much as he does. William Powell closes his career with a fine and touching performance as the ship's doctor. Newcomer (seems strange to say that!) Jack Lemmon plays the perfect gold brick, totally out of his element on a Navy supply ship. And veteran James Cagney gets it right as the frustrated Merchant Marine captain trying to make his name in the backwater ... full review(577) -

This film is probably director John Ford's crowning glory (he won the Best Director Oscar), but the key piece to this wonderful mosaic of characters in this American tragedy, is Henry Fonda (Oscar winner for Best Actor).
The two roles I most remember Fonda for is his portrayal of the holdout juror in "Twelve Angry Men" and in the role of Tom Joad, in this poignant tale of hope among ruins.
I first saw this film when I was in the eighth grade (1971), and I never forgot it. It was one of the first videos I purchased after I bought my VCR, and I have two DVD copies. Fonda's performance is one of the strongest I've ever seen, and I think it was easy for him to being Joad to life because of his own Midwestern roots. Fonda grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and as a youth ... full review(499) -
"A Man for All Times" - By Silver Screen Videos (Atlanta, GA)
Watching the 1964 political drama, "The Best Man," my immediate thought was "the more things change, the more they remain the same." The film is very much a drama of its own time, both in terms of technology (the characters use oversized walkie-talkies to communicate and carry 3 x 5 cards with information about the delegates) and issues. However, in terms of the sliminess of politics and the importance of character, it's as relevant as ever.
The film centers around the nominating convention in Los Angeles of a major political party that's patterned after the Democrats. The convention is pretty much deadlocked among the two front runners, Secretary of State William Russell (Henry Fonda) and Senator Joe Cantwell (Cliff Robertson), although several minor candidates have enough delegates to prevent either front runner from winning on the first ballot. Their task is to persuade the lesser candidates to endorse them ... full review(63)
