List Price: $79.95 Price: $50.92 You Save: $29.03 (36%) "A Scholarly Overview of Climatic Changes in Historical Times" - By Pamela Cook (Russellville, AR USA)
I used this book as a reference to write a position paper on global warming for a graduate course in Environmental Science. Professor Lamb's book is a fascinating account of how climate has impacted human history. Originally published in 1982 the new edition (1995) includes material on global warming, atmospheric pollution, population growth, and implications for future climatic fluctuations. This is a one stop reference.(5) -

Archeologist Brian Fagan has been in the forefront of studying how climate affects civilization over time for more than two decades. This important study suggests that in recorded history there is evidence of fundamental shifts in climate, and each has portended changes--sometimes drastic ones--that affected the human population. His specific subject this time was a colder period during the later Middle Ages and the early modern era in Europe and how this affected the European civilization. Based on a variety of sources ranging from historical documents to analysis of tree rings and deep ice cores, the period between about 1300 and 1850 was marked by a cooling trend around the world.
Known as the "Little Ice Age" this era was actually a period of modest cooling following the mediaeval warming period that lasted into the twelfth century. Coined by François E. Matthes in 1939 there is little agreement either ... full review(143) -

List Price: $24.95 Price: $14.99 You Save: $9.96 (40%) "On Global Warming's Trail" - By Bucherwurm (California United States)
This fairly slight volume is an important addition to the study of global warming. The book, easily understood by the average lay reader, recounts the history of climate change research starting in about 1896. I should point out that the reader will not take away a reasonably thorough knowledge of global warming science from the book. That is not its purpose. You do learn some elements of the science involved, but essentially you learn how our present day view of climate change came about.
Our knowledge of our climate chugged along at a fairly slow rate over the last 108 years for several reasons. A major problem was the essential need for the involvement of a wide variety of scientific specialties. In order to advance the study we have needed the input of physicists, oceanographers, geologists, chemists, meteorologists and even botanists. It is rare that such a diverse group of ... full review(23) -

List Price: $24.95 Price: $23.19 You Save: $1.76 (7%) "An historical perspective" - By Roald Euller (Washington, DC)
This is a recent translation from German of a book originally published in 2007.
While this book is explicitly a history of climate, the author keeps a steady focus on the implications of the historical narrative for the present debate on global warming, about which he has some interesting thoughts.
The book naturally falls into two parts. The first several chapters cover climate history from the origins of the earth 4.6 billion years ago through the present. This is a decent overview although might be a little succinct if this is one's first encounter with this material. The charts and graphs do a good job of supporting the text. Behringer takes pains to point out that the earth is currently in the midst of a several million year long ice age characterized by 100,000 year cycles of glaciation alternating with shorter and warmer interglacials. ... full review(9) -

List Price: $35.99 Price: $29.32 You Save: $6.67 (19%) "A Thorough Examination of the Subject" - By Otto Hannah
"Climate Change and the Course of Global History" puts present-day anthropogenic climate change into perspective. Brooke shows how the earth has experienced any number of mass extinctions, only to evolve new biosystems. In the vein of deep history, he also explains how human societies have waxed and waned depending on the state of the climate. It is clear that the earth has gone through long periods of warming and cooling, but this cycle is not an argument against the science that has shown how our present warming trend and resulting climate chaos. What is also clear is that we cannot predict the ultimate consequences of that climate chaos. History shows how each period is in its own way unique. Brooke's work is thorough, detailed, and erudite, based on a broad range of secondary sources written over the past few decades. It is not a quick ... full review(12) -

Price: $11.95 "Well written but with some technical problems and one rethink needed" - By Ralph Snyder
Dr. Maslin is a fine writer. He moves effortlessly through a mass of technical and controversial material. He gives a fair hearing to climate skeptics answering them when there is an answer, acknowledging a good point when they make it. Although the subject is heavy, Dr. Maslin's style is never heavy. It is charming, almost conversational and not with out moments of genuine humor.
The e-book suffers from some technical difficulties. There are passages that are oddly underlined; annoying but not a big deal. It also suffers from what seems to be common to all e-books: an inability to present charts and diagrams in a way that is easy to view.
My one real cavil is with the end of the book where Dr. Maslin imagines a post-warming utopia. It is a world of high density development where everyone walks or ... full review(7) -

List Price: $30.00 Price: $22.80 You Save: $7.20 (24%) "A Great Read!!!" - By Ken
This is a must-read book for anyone interested in or who doubts the effects of climate change. There are some real eye-opening facts in this well-researched, highly readable historical book. The consequences of climate change are laid in in clear, easy to understand sections that cover the span of the globe and how different cultures struggled to deal with the wild swings in weather during the 17th Century. When a dearth of sunspots, coupled with an increase in volcanic activity combined to drop worldwide temperatures by 0.5 to 2 degrees Celsius. It may not seem like much but simple mathematics show the devastating effects even such apparently small changes can have on food production.(46) -

List Price: $19.95 Price: $13.36 You Save: $6.59 (33%) "The Shock of a Politically Emancipatory History" - By Graham C Bracken
The Anthropocene.
The Anthropo-what?
It’s too big of a concept for most of us mere mortals to understand. Sure, the climate is changing – we’ve seen some graphs around. Sure, we’ve decided to call it a new geological epoch. Sure, we were the ones who did it. Now what? The mind balks.
One of the resounding messages of The Shock of the Anthropocene is that the concept itself is too big to be useful. Although Bonneuil and Fressoz don’t doubt that we’re entering a new era, they want to deconstruct this enormous linguistic Trojan Horse and show us what’s hiding inside: technocratic managers who, intentionally or not, will anesthetize politics and replace it with either authoritarian management or deeper and wider markets-in-everything.
This surely sounds a bit overblown for a debate about geological nomenclature, but it’s justified. And this book makes these fears palpable.

History of the discovery of global warming, as the title implies. I first read this book in a course on climate change I took to school myself as a journalist preparing to write about it. It's a must-read. Nothing better for learning about the science as it has developed since the late 19th century until now.(20) -

List Price: $26.95 Price: $23.95 You Save: $3.00 (11%) "Good news on Global Warming!" - By Djohn Ogren (Houston, TX)
This books documents the history of the global climate as a major public policy issue beginning with concerns about global cooling in the 70's and continuing on to the political concensus that the science is settled. Note this is a political and not a scientific concensus! The good news is that global warming is not a major problem and we do not need to commit mega dollars on carbon dioxide reduction. However, this good news about global warming does not reduce the need for better engergy efficiency and environmental responsibility as the world population continues to grow rapidly.(37) -

My students love these books AND I love these books! I have students who reach for them when they are done completing classwork, after tests and in study hall. I teach 7th grade science and I am constantly using these as in class references to explain topics to students who may not understand; these books put vocab into kid friendly terms that aren't intimidating. I currently own around 8-10 of the science themed books from Basher, I buy them as they get published and have been building my "library" for about 5-6 years now. These would make an excellent gift for any kid, a teacher or yourself for that matter. They have amazing graphics, are excellently written and are well made/bound.(11)
