"The best Georgia history so far" - By Jon L Albee (Houston, TX)
For a state as dynamic as Georgia, it's a bit surprising to discover so few good histories of it. While there are newer books, this one is, by far, the most comprehensive and effective.

Written by four contributors who are experts in their respective chronological periods, this book is a good, balanced attempt at 250 years of history from pre-1733 to about 1980. The editor manages to maintain the balance of the text by preventing it from becoming focussed on two or three critical events, such as the American Revolution, the Civil War, or the Civil Rights movement.

The chapters dedicated to colonial and ante-bellum Georgia are nicely fleshed out, while the chapters dedicated to post-WW2 are concerned mostly with local politics and feel forced. This is a common problem with historical writing in general, and is not an essential flaw of the book.

"Textbook in Disguise" - By Christine Lutz (Fort Valley, GA)
Jim Cobb has produced an engaging story of Georgia, half-memoir, that turns out to be a terrific textbook. Try it with high-schoolers, and just read it yourself. Nobody's intelligence is insulted, but even teens can enjoy this.

"Endless struggles and horror" - By othoniaboys
I previously had only a very sketchy idea of the history of Georgia. I now see, only too clearly, that the history of this small nation has been full of struggles and horror. The author provides an extremely detailed and comprehensive narrative. It was nothing but fight, fight, fight. The Georgians, when they weren't busy fighting the Turks, Iranians and Russians, were busy with internal strife and dynastic conflicts. It is a wonder that anything was left after all the bloodshed.

"Not bad, but could have been more extensive" - By Cargus10
Granted, the subject material is a bit obscure, so I doubt this book will appeal to most. Gives a good basic understanding of the history of the area, but it was much "lighter" than I had hoped for. A thorough examination of this topic could easily have been three times as long, but for what is basically an extended overview, this book does a nice enough job, and is a generally pleasant read. I'd really give it 3.5 stars, if we were allowed to give half-star ratings.

Note that I am a resident of the area, and was born here, so a lot of this history I absorbed growing up.

"Compelling Story of a Hideous and Historical Crime" - By zorba (Bala Cynwyd, Pa USA)
It is not possible to read this account of a lynching in postwar Georgia without feeling a burning sense of anger with each passing page. On a summer day in 1946 four black people (one of them a decorated WWII vet) were lynched near the Moore's Ford bridge in a small Georgia farming community. The deed aroused strong national attention, particularly drawing the personal attention of President Harry Truman and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. The scene shortly was over-run by local and state investigators plus a plethora of FBI agents. You would think such a formidable law response would produce the murderers in short order. But it was not to be. Fear and intimidation of the black community and a general campaign of silence in the white pretty much put the kabosh on meaningful testimony to a grand jury. "Interesting." - By Marcia R. Stroup (North Idaho, USA)
It's interesting. Some of it reminded me of some of the scenes from Gone With The Wind. Makes me wonder if Margaret Mitchell read this and then embellished it to novel size.
