"insights with balance" - By Jae Won
Some months ago, I travelled to Europe for a training program for communication skills, and there was a suggestion by the communications coach, after learning that i came from Korea, that I should write an essay to explain the Korea the people and the country with a spin on doing business there and submit to one of those management magazines. He said that while Korea profile is growing internationally, the country and its people are still an enigma. That was a surprise to me but as I thought about it more, he was completely right. Between China and Japan, it is not as if there isn't enough to talk about in East Asia. So Korea's share of the limelight would have been somewhat limited. That is starting to change as the country starts to become a more active player on the global arena in many facets of political, economics and ... full review

"Broad, but not deep" - By Steven D. Ward (Independence, MO)
I looked at this book as an introduction to the broad strokes of modern Korean history, and for my purposes it worked wonderfully. I learned a lot, and the book brought a lot of new questions into my mind.

That being said, I went immediately from this book to [[ASIN:0393327027 Korea's Place in the Sun: A Modern History, Updated Edition]]. And I mean within a few hours of finishing The Two Koreas. Cuming's book is far more expansive and goes back farther into history, but I am very glad I read The Two Korea's first, so that I would have the big picture in mind while reading Cumings.

Also, I agree with other reviewers that said the author bringing in his personal stories got a little annoying and there could have been more natural ways to introduce the same information.

So for people just looking for a ... full review

"Terrific history of Korea" - By Lawrence D. Ink (Beltsville, MD USA)
This is a terrific single volume history of Korea from its beginning to the present. Jinwung Kim puts a lot of information into the book without weighing it down with too much detail. The book reads very easily. My only complaint is the lack of photos. Aside from a few photos of old Korean artwork (printed in black and white) there are no pictures in the book. The book would be improved if future editions contained many photos of Korea and the people that make up its history. Since the content is so good, there should be future editions.

Very good information on things that happened behind the scenes during the Korean War era.
I may be slightly prejudiced about "The Fighter Pilot" part because that person is my next door neighbor, but he has told many of the stories as they were portrayed in the book.

"1A Masterpiece" - By MindiL (Tampa, Florida USA)
This is a true masterpiece. I consider myself an educated person but I was shocked to read about the events that take place every day in North Korea and the oppressive regime they are forced to live under. Oppressive really doesn't describe how they live--they live in squalid conditions, after being promised by their "savior" Kim Jung Sun/Kim Jun Ill/Kim Jun Un (whoever is in power at the time) that they will be well taken care of and are convinced that all other "capitalist" countries, especially the US are "evil". North Korea gives propaganda, brain washing and terrorizing a new name. While people work without being paid, are forced to live in isolation from the events of the rest of the world and scavenge for food with the fear of being caught by the government, approximately 25% of the country's resources are being spend towards the ... full review

"A Touching Story About Courage And Friendship" - By Jeffrey T. Munson (Dixon, IL)
"Devotion" is a true story of heroism and friendship set against the backdrop of the Korean war. The story revolves around two pilots; Lt. Tom Hudner and Ens. Jesse Brown. Tom came from a well-to-do New England family, while Jesse grew up on a farm that his father share-cropped.. Jesse became the Navy's first black carrier pilot, while Tom would become his closest friend.

After enlisting, Tom and Jesse were stationed aboard the carrier USS Leyte. Originally sent to the Mediterranean, the pilots would engage in war games and relax on the French Riviera. They even got to meet Elizabeth Taylor. They also met some of the fleet Marines, including "Red" Parkinson. But the sunny skies and carefree days wouldn't last, for the war that no one expected, Korea, broke out in June of 1950. The Leyte immediately steamed for Korean ... full review
