Having just returned from SE Asia I can say in all honesty, if you want one succinct book on the history and current (but not current enough and reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars)--this is it.
Read before we went, will re-read when jet lag abates.(6) -

List Price: $14.95 Price: $10.26 You Save: $4.69 (31%) "A Traveller's History of Southeast Asia" - By Michael Gunther (Maryland, USA)
"Southeast Asia" is in many ways a typical title in this popular British series: a readable and informative introduction to the history of Southeast Asia for students and travelers. The book, again like most in the series, devotes most of its pages to the Common Period (1500 - the present). This is an advantage for the business or political traveler, but a disadvantage for the cultural traveler, since the most interesting and beautiful monuments (Angkor, for example) were built during the earlier Classical Period (500 - 1500), which is discussed only briefly (40 pages out of 340) in this book. So plan on reading other books, in addition to this one, if you want a full view of the panorama of SE Asia's ancient history.
In terms of coverage, the "Traveller's History of Southeast Asia" includes most of mainland and island Southeast Asia, with most attention being paid to ... full review(9) -

Price: $23.95 "Excellent introduction to SEA - Minor Kindle defect" - By Bruno Aeschbacher (CH-1205 Geneva, Switzerland)
An excellent introduction to the countries of this fascinating region. Probably not easy to summarize such a big area with so much history, but Osborne's book does just that, and provides a list of suggested reading to dig deeper by country or subject. Worth every penny. I got both the print and Kindle edition but returned the Kindle one because it shows two images of the front cover, but no image of the back cover (downloaded on November 12, 2016). Hope they will correct this minor defect in Kindle, such a book should be published in best quality.(6) -

List Price: $21.95 Price: $16.95 You Save: $5.00 (23%) "A good quality history." - By Gary
This book is an acceptable introduction to the history of the area for those without previous knowledge. It is somewhat frustrating if, like myself, you are interested in only one country in the region. It has the usual advantages and limitations of this genre of "summary of history" books.(5) -

Somewhat out of date now but provides a good background summary of the history and events up until 2004. I was led to believe that there was more individual background on the people as opposed to a general history. An updated version would be great Mr Studwell.(37) -

Price: $2.99 "Great for planning..." - By martin
Even though this book is relatively new a lot of the information is already dated and it fails to address some of the more obvious needs of a traveler. Its not quite as good as some of the other Lonely guides I've used in the past. That said, I'd have been pretty lost without it,,,,(2) -

List Price: $52.00 Price: $49.85 You Save: $2.15 (4%) "Excellent Introduction to the Early History of SE Asia" - By Michael Le Houllier (Taichung City, Taiwan)
Southeast Asia is often the forgotten sister of Asia in that when people study the region or mention it, they talk about China, Japan or India, and when Southeast Asia IS referred to, it is often in context with the Vietnam War and subsequent spinoff conflicts resulting from that war. This is unfortunate, as Southeast Asia has a rich history with a variety of interesting and highly successful cultures.
In this first of four volumes, Southeast Asia from prehistoric times to about A.D. 1500 is discussed in depth in five chapters written by different scholars addressing their individual specialties in the region. This is what sets Cambridge Histories apart from most others.
J.D. Legge's article addresses the very history of the writting of Southeast Asia. He discusses in depth the differences between Pre WWII and Post WWII scholarship. World War II is when the ... full review(3)
