"Nice drawings" - By Tam A (Sydney, Australia)
My son wanted a book that showed detailed drawings of architecture, designs, etc and this is a great compilation for anyone interested in that sort of thing. It is detailed enough, but not overwhelming. My son is 13 and likes to learn, likes to design, and finds this book fascinating.(55) -

Silicon Valley has warped our perspective on innovation. Think of the words invention or innovation, and what’s most likely to come to mind today? The computer, the Internet, and their various permutations and combinations. But take a broader, historical perspective, as Steven Johnson does through the lens of what he terms “long-view history,” and the concept of innovation looks very different, indeed.
In Johnson’s view — and possibly in yours as well, if you read How We Got to Now — the most profound innovations that have made our lives what we are today involve glass, cold, sound, cleanliness, time, and light. Take glass, for example, the substance that human ingenuity has crafted into spectacles, telescopes, microscopes, still and film cameras, and the fiber-optic cables that constitute the backbone of the Internet and carry the lion’s share of transoceanic telephone and data transmissions. This is Big Picture history that ... full review(520) -

Pyle's "Innovation The NASA Way" offers a rare look at some of the most intriguing, complicated, and joyfully entertaining stories of our time - that of the furthering of scientific achievement and innovation through mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge, and competition.
The book starts with an awe-inspiring explanation of the landing of Sojourner on Mars. Pyle's words burgeon our imaginations of an object filled with the spirit of its creators, so ingeniously manufactured in the face of countless challenges, entering the grounds of a fantastic new world yet to be explored - one of the many triumphs of modern science. It is this method of telling first a good story, and then having the sciences so effortlessly disguised within, that makes this book such an entertaining read for both scientists and non-specialists alike.
Pyle continues throughout by presenting first hand the challenges of space travel, of pushing our ... full review(16) -

List Price: $16.95 Price: $10.26 You Save: $6.69 (39%) "Extremely important" - By Samuel C. Pence
One of the most important books I've read in a long time. The authors are clearly authorities on the subject and have done excellent research in the many periphery fields related to the phenomenon they have dubbed our "second machine age". Almost every implication of our technology-dominated future is covered here; economics, politics, changing societal values, and many others. The central thesis of the book is that the introduction for the first time in our history of technological progress that is (1) exponential, (2) digital and (3) combinatorial will have massive ramifications not only in the long-term but also over the next decade.
The section that I found the most interesting was that on the future of labor demand. As the authors argue, these three characteristics of technological progress will soon wipe out many of the repetition- and pattern-based occupations we associate with the American middle class, as they ... full review(527) -

Well organized and clearly writen, this is a history of technology that everyone can understand and enjoy. I started reading this book, logically, on page 1, but please consider reading the last chapter first. The final chapter examines Bell Labs in the context of current technology focused companies and organizations. With that in mind, the story of Bell Labs is even more engaging.
I think corporate leaders of non-tech companies will learn a good deal about how to effectively manage their organization and encourage innovation. Bell Labs greatest product was clear and focused thinking and problem solving What organization today wouldn't benefit from a bit more of that?
I also recommend this as good reading for a high school student who is trying to decide on a course of college study and future career. If you're bored after 50 pages, a career in technology probablly shouldn't be your ... full review(287) -

Price: $13.99 "This book covers a lot of territory ~ Very well written & easy to follow" - By Expressed Reviews
This rather large book does a wonderful job at reviewing the history of computing. It starts several centuries back and proceeds to the present age. While it may not satisfy the die-hard computer geek, it does fill an important need for the majority of people who want to know the origins of the computer and the Information Age. It goes into detail about the introduction of ENIAC just after World War II, and how one of its first programs was a study of the feasibility of the hydrogen bomb. It covers the advent of the Internet in detail and provides a great deal of information on topics that most layman wouldn't have known about.
I've read all of Walter Isaacson's books and thoroughly enjoyed this latest addition. He writes with conviction and provides superb insight, obviously spending a great deal of time researching and editing prior to releasing each ... full review(990) -

List Price: $32.00 Price: $29.02 You Save: $2.98 (9%) "Fascinating and important history of computing research and development at BBN" - By Jeffrey R. Yost
Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN) has had a profound impact on the history of computing for more than a half century--from cybernetics and artificial intelligence to the ARPANET and networked email. This volume expertly captures the innovative culture and technical work at BBN over more than a half century through the writing of 19 long-time engineers and managers with the firm.
The book is cleverly designed to mimic the look of the technical reports BBN put out for many years. (It is in fact a glue bound paperback rather than a GBC comb-bound volume.)
Some of the material was originally published in two special issues of IEEE Annals of the History of Computing (v. 27, n.2 and v. 28 n. 1 2005, 2006), but a number of the chapters in this volume are longer/expanded versions, and some of the chapters are completely original to ... full review(2) -
