Under This Roof is an engaging and expertly researched book, bringing together well known events like the Civil War, the War of 1812 and the Bay of Pigs, as well as the stories behind the history of the building and the US presidency. The book is a must read for anyone who knows Paul Brandus from his journalism and his leading Twitter presence. I've so enjoyed the book's spotlight on those people around the presidents. I loved this book. The Residence gives the reader a real sense of the people who support the families that live in the White House. It is a fascinating glimpse into life in the White House and the people who inhabit it. Although the interviewees confidentiality prevented them from revealing too much, there is just enough scintillating stories to make this book a great read.
There are stories about the Kennedy's, hilarious stories about Johnson, of course the Clintons, and Bushes. What I found interesting were that my political views aside these people were kind and caring to the staff, so I felt like I got to see them as human beings and not just politicians with an agenda.

I enjoyed reading the history of the renovation or rebuilding of the White House. I did not know the extreme lengths taken in the work done. If you look at the movie 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' from the early 1950's in an opening scene, filmed on location in Washington, D.C. you can see the White House in the background under renovation.(150) -

Each section gives not only a lovely pictorial view of the White House but intricate historical details. I found the book both entertaining and educational. Recommend it highly, especially as a gift to a middle or high school library.(39) -

After a tour through the White House, I became interested in learning more about its history. I bought this book because it approaches the material at the level I wanted. So many books about the White House seemed dry, stuck on describing antiques, or bent on critiquing the architecture. This one has some "warmth" in the stories about the building's evolution.
